Help with 1860 Census

To anyone who has an ancestry.com subscription and some curiosity: I would like a second opinion about a name in the 1860 Chautauqua, Chautauqua, New York Census, page 42 of 73 (which you should be able to get to via this link - http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=7667&pa... ). About 2/3 of the way down the page there is a family with given names Andrew, Mary & Mary. Can you tell me what you think the last name is? I absolutely do not agree with the transcriber. I won't give you my opinion as I don't want to influence your answer.

Thanks much!

John Sweetman & Mattie Davis 50th wedding anniversary, 1887, Sheridan NY

The Fredonia Censor, 05 Jan 1887, Wednesday

Sheridan
As New Year's day was the fiftieth anniversary of the wedding of Mr. and Mrs. John Sweetman, arrangements were made to surprise them. The time set to storm the castle was five p. m. sharp. Trains were watched and as relatives arrived they were taken care of by near neighbors until the hour appointed, when from east and west two companies met at their door and knocked for admittance. It is needless to say that we received a cordial welcome. The surprise was complete and tears of joy ran down their cheeks when they saw their two sons, Charles and William, from Meadville, Pa., present with their entire families. Also Leander and Wright with their wives, from Perysburg. After the greetings were over Mrs. George Cranston entertained the company by reading the poem entitled, "The Hanging of the Crane," after which supper was served. John and Mattie, as we call them, were generously remembered with gifts suitable for the occasion. The evening was heartily enjoyed by all present.

I know that she was the daughter of Seth and Zerviah Cowles Griswold but I cannot provide a birth record or an obit. for the DAR genies. I know that Ruth would not have suggested and shown the connection all the way from Seth and Zerviah to my grandfather, but I can not convince DAR. Thank you to all of you who tried to help!

Hi Dottie,
I just got back from a very informative trip to Adrian Michigan. I went there to find Samuel Porter Durhams's 341 page probate. Samuel and his wife, Prudence didn't have children, except for an adopted daughter who died when she was 12. so the probate listed all of his brothers and sisters and if they had died, their children.
Allen and Ruth Porter Durham had the following children
1) Diantha Durham b. 1787 m. Jonathan Kellogg
2) Allen Durham Jr. b 1792 m. Mary (Polly) Tupper
3) Urania Durham b. 1793 m. Flint Keith then James Dinnin
4) Samuel Durham b. 1798 m. Prudence Ostrander
5) Ruth Durham b. 1800 m. James Sword

children of Allen and Caroline Huldah Wood Durham
1) Charlotte L Durham b. 1807 m. Isreal Bowen
2) Justus Durham b. 1811 m
3) Caroline Durham b.1812 m. Justin Webster and ? Miller
4) Daniel Durham b. 1817 Phildelia Truesdel
5) Charles Durham b. 1819 m. Jane Richardson
6) Huldah Wood b. 1822 m. Major D. Reynolds

I also found Urania's children in the probate. I was missing three of them...still missing one
Flint and Urania Durham Keith' children were
1) Flavel Keith
2) Mary Ann Keith Wood
3) Olive Keith
4) daughter Keith
5) Orson Keith
6) Edgar Keith
7) Grindal Keith
James and Urania Durham Dinnin's children were
1) Samuel Dinnin
2) Porter Dinnin

My husband and I traveled to where some of the children were born, Berkshire Vermont, in early September. We found absolutely nothing. Their old records are very sparce.
Hi Anna, I am looking for some swedish information. If you could help me. The family is the Stenbergs ...Anna Stenberg married an Eaton from Frewsburg, her sister Johanna Stenberg married John William Seekings, Charlotte Stenberg married a Nelson and their daugher married a Carlson. I have other information on the family. I know that Anna and Johanna came around 1880 to 1882 and that Charlotte came with her husband and father John Stenberg in 1905. I know that John was near 75 yrs old when he came. His wife was Beatta. The lived i think in Soderholm Parish area, Galveborg, Sweden. Charlotte Stenberg Nelson lived on Barrett Street with one son after her husband died. The other two sons lived across the street. I think the address was like 238 Barrett Ave, Jamestown. Olof Stenberg never married and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery. Anna Stenberg Eaton and her father are buried in Frewsburg Cemetery. Charlotte and her husband are buried in Lakeview but not next to each other. Her daughter is buried near her next to her husband.

Peter Barnhart and the "Liberty Pole"
Doris,
This would be wonderful to do. I dare say that it surely was a brave thing to do. Liberty Poles might make a comeback. I think we should ask Greg Edwards, County Exec. and the Fenton Park Historical Society and I will check tomorrow with the Westfield Chautauqua County Historical Society. They may not be aware of this important fact about Peter Barnhart being the very first American to raise the first American Flag over Chautauqua Lake and Chautauqua County.

It would be great to see your brother, the last male Barnhart to reinact the Liberty Pole Flag raising. Gee, our family reunion is so close to the 4th of July and the Barnhart Foster reunion was always around that time of year near Mayville, Hartfield, Magnolia -Chautauqua area that maybe we could get our families there again. Peter Barnhart, Hiriam Barnhart and Mary Jane Mayme Barnhart would be proud.

Archie, Grace and Kitty were very close to their mom. I was glad to see Grace Foster Maxwell was buried next to her mom. We went last year and put flowers on their graves in Chautauqua Cemetery near Magnolia. It was nice to see Chautauqua County memorializing Peter Barnhart's Grave. I think they could bring back our county's rich heritage in America's Freedom by what you suggest.

Wright Patterson AFB is in the process of getting the Presidential Letter to give to me in about six weeks. I wanted to get this for our family. Our family has a long history of military heritage and tradition spanning four hundred years in America.

Cousin LeRoy

Subject: Barnharts

LeRoy,
When I get the the paper I'll send you a copy.

Somewhere you'll find reference to Peter Barnhart rising the flag near Lake Chautaugua.

During the Revolutionary War, Patriots declared their support by raising a flag on what they called, "Liberty Poles."
Since this was an act of treason, it was a brave action (or maybe even foolhardy action, depending on where you lived.)

Peter, who was a true patriot, erected a "Liberty Pole" on his Chautaugua property when he settled there in 1805, and continued the tradition of raising the flag on the 4th of July. This must have been heartwarming to the other veterans living near the lake.

It is great that your family can experience this show of
Patriotism.

Old Peter would be proud!

Maybe we will have to do this on our own, with the permission to the owner of the property now.
What do youu think.

Cousin Doris

AND there is a 16yr old Mary Ametia and 14yr old Alexander Dumond. So...is this an enumerators or transcribers mistake? or...is EMO actually DUMOND and these are children visiting the family?

And in the Feb. 23 edition of News: "Cyrus Andrews was born in Middletown, Rutland County, VT 12 July 1813. At the age of 18 (1831) he settled in the Town of Gerry where he resided over 29 years. He removed to Ellington in 1860 to the farm where he has since lived. In 1841 he married Lydia WARD who died in 1843. He married second 24 Sept. 1844 Clarissa THORN who survives. If you know 16 yr olds, easily taken by 27 yr old guys. Plus, knowing Eunice temperment, I wouldn't doubt she'd do it. But I plan on going to Kent Co. Courthouse to check on this one & a few others.**
___________________________________________________________
Eunice Cothrell was my mother's grandma. She hated kids & was not a very kind person. She was born Nov 1853 in New York State. Eunice married John Albert Dozeman in 1877. She died in Grand Rapids, MI., 3 Jan 1931, when living at Holland Home. My Grandparents (Crosby) did not have room for her to live with them. Eunice died on my mother's 9th birthday. She was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery 6 Jan 1931.
Here is some more info:
Buried by Gerrit VanStrien on Lot 66 - Block J - Grave # 8
Obituary Notice: Doezman- Eunice Doezman
aged 77 passed away Jan 3, 1931 at the Holland Home. Surviving are one daughter and one niece of Lansing, Michigan. Funeral services Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 pm at the Holland Home. Interment in Oak Hill Cemetary. Arrangements by VanStrien.
Family Notes: The above niece mentioned living in Lansing, Michigan was Mildred Dozeman Crosby's cousin who had the Dozeman Bible, and would not allow Mildred to take it to the Grand Rapids City Office to get a Birth certificate so she could get her pension. Her name was May Moon.
Thelma P. Crosby VanDerBos stated that when her parents lived on the farm, Eunice ran the pigs till they were so hot, then proceeded to douse them with well water and killed them all.
___________________________________________________________
10th June 1880 MI Census, Page 33, No. 1.:
The Dozeman name is listed as Dozaman.
John Dozeman was working for the railroad as yard master at time of 1880 Census. They lived in Jackson, Jackson Co., MI. John A. Dozaman was 28 & Eunice was 26 yrs old.
My grandma, Mildred Ellen, was only 11 mo old and Maude was 3 years old.

Hi. Just decided to see if you are descended from the Potter's who go back, then, to Amy Freeman Potter? She and my great grandmother, Josephine Freeman Shaw were sisters. She died in 1884 and my aunt and believe my dad and other aunts recalled their mom, Clara Josephine Shaw Dorothy visiting Amy who was her aunt. They lived in Martin Count and I believe Potter's were over by Sherburn. In 1880 four of the Freeman siblings lived in Waverly Township, Martin County, (south of Truman), Minnesota.

Hi. I just tapped into Mike Dino Peterson's info yesterday. I would much rather learn for sure that Elijah and Olive are Silas's parents.... That is what my research led me to have on my tree. Silas would be my great great great grandfather through Walter Freeman, Josephine Freeman Shaw, Clara Josephine Shaw Dorothy and my dad, Gordon Dorothy.

What type of thing caused you to see that this is likely?

Thanks.
Have you ordered his military records and pension file from the National Archives? There maybe indications of his birth date and place in them.

My ancestor's pension file included a copy of their 1854 marriage certificate when his wife applied for a widow's pension. Never would have found it otherwise.

If the family had quaker origins, it's possible that a dob could be found in those sources. They kept excellent records. Otherwise vital records from NYS in that time frame is next to impossible to find.
