Robin,

You can send for Eva`s SS5 form from the Social Security Admin. The SS5 is the original application for a SS number. Eva would have filled it out & it asks for birthplace & parents names which I assume she would have known. The cost to order the form in $27. & it takes a few weeks to get it but is definitely worth it. Use the SSDI search at Rootsweb to find Eva Torrence & you can generate a letter to the SS Admin. right on the site. http://ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com/

If John died in 1949 he won`t appear on the Death Index. That starts in the 1960`s. He might have had a SS number, though. If you can locate his death record, it might have it & you could then send for his SS5, if the certificate doesn`t have parents names. It is possible he did not have a SS number since he was a self employed farmer. At that time not everyone was required to have a SS number.

Good luck,
Pat
