Just a note - if Mary Sanderson Russell is the mother of the Sanderson children on the 1940 census, her maiden name would likely NOT be Sanderson - that would be the name from her first marriage (the father of her children)

I don't find any reference to Mary Sanderson Russell other than the 2 Sanderson children (Helen and Donald) listed as step children to Emmett Russell on the 1940 census. I find it curious that Emmett's wife is Sarah on the 1920 & 1930 census, and there is a Sarah (same age as the wife) listed as Housekeeper in the 1940 census. I did find a cemetery record listing "Mrs E Russell" buried in 1938... but without any dates in your post, it's hard to know if that is who you are looking for.

1940 Columbus, Chenago, NY
Russell, Emmett C, head, m, w, 40 wd
- Sarah, housekeeper, f, w, 38, d
- Doris, daughter, f, w, 18, s, NY
- Stanley, son, m, w, 17, s, NY
- Arlene, daughter, f, w, 12,
- Irene, daughter, f, w, 10
- Marion, daughter, f, w, 6
- Junior, son, m, w, 2, s, NY
Sanderson, Helen, step daughter, f, w, 14 Michigan
Sanderson, Donald, step son, m, w, 12, s, Michigan

1930 Census
District 35, Oneida, Madison, New York
Russell, Emmett C, head, m, w, 30, m, 31
- Sarah L, wife, f, w, 28, m, 19
- Doris L, daughter, f, w, 8, s
- Stanley A, son, m, w, 7, s
- Arlene E, daughter, f, w, 2 1/12, s
- Irene, daughter, f, w, 2/12, s

1920 Census
Smyrna, Chenago, New York
Russell, Emmett, head, m, w, 20, m
- Sarah, wife, f, w, 18, m

World War I Draft Registration
Emmett Clayton Russell
Residence: Smyrna, Chenago, NY
age: 19, born May 4, 1899
Occupation: Farmer, Employer: Adelbert Russell
Nearest Relative: Iva Russell
filed 12 Sept 1918

1915 New York Census
Smyrna, Chenango, New York
Russell, Adelbert E, head, w, m, 54
- Iva, wife, w, f, 35
- Emmett C, son, w, m, 16
- Edith M, daughter, w, f, 14
- Faye M, daughter, w, f, 12
- Delbert I, son, w, m, 2?
- Lewis H, head, w, m, 25
- Alice M, wife, w, f, 30

1910 United States Census
Smyrna, Chenango, New York
Russell, Adelbert E, head, m, w, 49, m2, 12
- Iva J, wife, f, w, 30, m1, 12, 3/3
- Lewis H, son, m, w, 19, s
- Emmett C, son, m, w, 11, s
- Edith M, son, m, w, 9, s
- Hazel M, daughter, f, w, 7, s
(This census indicates it is a second marriage for Adelbert, 1st marriage for Iva J. I suspect he died before 1900, as I cannot locate him in that census, but I have not found any death or burial information for him in either Chenango or Cortland counties.

I believe he was twice married: first to Eunice YOUNG(S) ca 1834 and had three children: Lyman (b. ca 1835 NY), William David (b. 1839 NY) and Mary Jane (b. 1842 NY); I expect they divorced ca 1845.

Then it appears that Eli (Ely) remarried Phebe (Phoebe; nee unknown) and had three children with her: Theodore (b. ca 1847 NY), Jane E. (b. ca 1848 NY), and Dewitt Clinton (b. 1849 NY). I have reason to believe that Phebe (Phoebe) may be a daughter of Martin BUSHNELL of Madison Co., NY.

If any of this sounds familiar to anyone, please contact me or leave me a note here. Thanks!

Wow...so I see this was from 2001, but have the same line as both of you. This is my maternal fathers side of the family and the one I am most interested in. I BELIEVE, that Elizabeth Drake, married to Captain John Phillips, was actually Native American. Do either of you know more?
OBIT of Burrel Story (b. 1772 d. 1858)--lived in Norwich, Chenango

I am in search of an obit for my 2 greats grandfather Burrel Story, and believe it may have been published in a Chenango pulication as have not found it in Otsego, and he lived in both places. The below background may assist.

Burrel Story was a hatmaker. He was born in 1772 in Connecticut and buried in 1858 at Schuyler’s Lake, Exeter, Otsego.

He married Laura Hamilton Story, daughter of Daniel Hamilton and Kezziah Keyes Hamilton.

Residences for Burrel Story include Hartwick, Otsego, NY (1810); Norwich, Chenango, NY (1820); and Schuyler’s Lake, Exeter, Otsego, NY (1830 to 1858.)

Daniel Hamilton, Burrel’s father in law, was a revolutionary war vet and graduate of West Point. Laura and Burrel Story had 2 children Harriet Story Scott b. 1815 and Joseph Story b. 1834. Laura’s siblings were Almira, Artusa, Luman, Fanny, John, Mary “Polly,” Melinda, Kezziah.

Both Laura and Burrel Story are buried in the Old Cemetery at Schuyler’s Lake Exeter, Otsego. The Story children moved to the Chicago area where they are buried. Joseph Story was a dry goods salesman, and Harriet Story made confections. Joseph married Margaret McGown. Harriet married George Scott.
I checked At Rest in Unadilla and, unfortunately, no Beckwiths there in the main index or in the maiden name index.

I'd be happy to look up anyone else at any time for anyone. I figure I have the book so might as well make it useful.

Max Ward

My direct ancestor was Burrel L. Story. I am a Story by birth. I can't find his parents. He was born in New London, Prescott, CT in 1792 and died in Otsego, NY.

He was said to be a hatmaker and lived in Norwich, Chenango in his 20s, actually at about the age of 28, per the census of that year.

He was married to a Laura Hamilton Story. Anyone heard of this family? Thx!!

Thx!
