Maus Family Folk Lore

There was a Maus family living in the Hudson River country or in the adjoining Mohawk River valley that was surprised by a band of Indians during the French and Indian War (1758-1759). The elders were massacred and the cattle and horses herded off; and the children, a boy and a girl were taken captive. Later, under more peaceful conditions, a few of these Indians following one of their trails, came to a crossing where there was a small settlement and a "trading post" (general store) somewhere in the vicinity of Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Undoubtedly, they came to trade furs and /or venison for blankets, sugar, tea, and maybe colourful trinkets that the white man had.

The store owner seeing a white boy and a white girl with the Indians bargained for them, and the Indians departed. Not long thereafter, the Indians returned to steal the boy. When the store owner apprehended the Indians he succeeded in hiding the boy under merchandise and bluffed the Indians into leaving the place. The Indians hardly dared to make a fuss on account of their recent treaty, and undoubtedly there was a detachment of British army not far away. The girl who was a couple of years older than the boy disappeared, and was never found. It is believed that the Indians did take her.

The store owner, so the story runs, was a Henry Van Scoick. The spelling "Van Scoick" is as given in the earliest writing found, and as given by John Maus to Mrs. Elizabeth (Stuart) Maus. The boy he rescued was William Maus. The dates: William was born about 1752 and his release from the Indians was about 1760.

William Maus grew up in the Van Scoick household and quite naturally worked as his age and ability permitted. When about twenty-four years of age he was freighting goods for Mr. Van Scoick on the road somewhere out from Saratoga when he was attacked by a small band of scouts of the revolutionary army who too his horses, wagon and goods and would have made him one of their party. They had frightened the horses and while trying to control the horses William escaped into the woods, hid himself awhile and in due time made his way back to the Van Scoick place. This is said to have happened about a week before the Battle of Saratoga, Oct. 11, 1777.

The story continues that William won the hand of the storekeeper's daughter, Lydia. The were married about 1780. It is quite in keeping then that when their first sone was born 23 November, 1782, that the named him "Henry Van Scoick Maus" in recognition of the man who had saved William from the Indians.

There have been many variations of this story in local Ontario newspapers, with dates that often did not co-ordinate with events of history. The above writing coordinates the story with the dates of history.

Notes
Quote from Mrs. Ethel E. (Maus) Miller, granddaughter of Henry V.S. Maus:
"I believe that there were seven children in the family. They all lived on the Maus Plains at one time. Dan Maus married and had three children: Adelaide, Jane and Sam. The two girls were fine seamstresses. The whole family (Dan's) moved from Maus Plains to Batavia or Buffalo (N.Y.) where the girls had good work sewing there---they were not married---then I heard no more about them. One Elizabeth Maus married Adam Bawtinheimer, my uncle; he was a brother of my mother (Jane Bawtinheimer). I think there was a boy named William. There was A Laura (Maus) who married a Mr. Luther."
