Thank you for passing along the fascinating article about J William, Bessie and the trout. I also have a photo of a trout about that big, ca. 1933.
J William was single in 1920. I searched for all the Elizabeth/Bess* of the right age (b abt 1896) in Ulster and Sullivan Cos. in 1920. There was a Bessie BROOKS in Neversink, single, and a teacher. Bessie ERTS was a public school teacher in 1930, so I bet they are the same and I will look for a marriage record. I'll fill you in if I can confirm this guess.
I appreciate your help!
Hi Carol,
I do not know her maiden name. I have her name as Elizabeth E. I believe I took it off her gravestone in Denning. I know the 1930 census says Bessie B. I also have John William Erts and William John Erts from different sources for the same man. I found this article in the New Paltz library that referenced John William Erts and thought you might like it.
Sorry I can't help with the name.
Walt Jennings

Catskill Portraits

John William Erts
by
Austin McK. Francis

"I was born here, said the old-timer. "never lived on any foundation but this one. That'll be 90 years next May." He didn't make it; in July of 1980, two weeks after talking with this reporter, William Erts suffered a stroke and died.
In his 89 years on the upper East Branch of the Neversink river, Erts made a substantial contribution to the Catskill angling tradition. He was a builder of houses, bridges, and dams; a landowner of a considerable piece of the valley and the river; an accomplished fly fisherman; caretaker of the river and property of a wealthy neighbor downstream; Supervisor of the Town of Denning; and by general consent, lifelong Mayor of the Valley.
Erts' grandfather, Joseph Erts, was the first of the family to live in this country. he came over from Germany in the early 1800's and established a farm on the hill overlooking the Neversink's East Branch. Joseph Erts, Jr. moved down into the valley and acquired thousands of acres along the river. At one time, he owned the entire upper end of the valley, which eventually was split up among several families including Tison, Nevins, Straus and Schoonmaker.
William Erts remembered working for his father who in 1900 oversaw the construction of "Gray Lodge" for Alexander Tison, former Ambassador to Japan. Situated on some 600 acres at the head of the valley, the lodge's oriental design and gardens were supervised by a Japanese architect. "I worked on the house 10 hours a day for $3 a day," said Erts. "It had five bathrooms, quite a lot of them, and five fireplaces."
Erts was well disciplined by his father, for he became a prodigious builder in his own right. he tore his 1800's house off its foundation in 1933 and rebuild it from scratch. He built a four room cabin of striped hemlock logs for the Nevins family up stream. He remodeled most of the houses in the valley. many of the bridges across the upper East Branch are his handiwork. And, following the design of Ed Hewitt, whom he knew, Erts built a number of long-and-plank dams on the river.
While Erts was still in his 20's, he began working for John D. Schoonmaker, who had a summer house just downstream. Schoonmaker owned the Island Dock Shipyard in Kingston, N.Y., which employed about 900 people making submarines during World War I. He was also well connected politically and once was asked by his judge and senator friends to run for governor.
Erts kept up all of Schoonmaker's buildings and managed his fishing, which included about 2 1/2 miles of the stream. Schoonmaker owned from the Denning bridge al the way down to Ladleton. Erts recalled his trips to the Old Napanoch hatchery to bring back the trout and the raw liver which they were fed. "I can still smell that liver," he said. "We used to grind it up like sausage meat an keep it in pails to spoon out into the stream.
Mrs. Erts, who, had been listening, said, "To this day you would not dare serve liver on our table. Why, William wouldn't even eat the fish!"
Under Erts' care, which included chasing poachers off the stream, Schoonmaker's fishing was probably the best in the upper valley. He often brought angling friends up to enjoy it, and sometimes he would call ahead: "William, I'm having company this weekend, I want a dozen trout of about 10 inches for dinner tonight at seven." Erts figured that Schoonmaker thought he had the trout all penned up like cattle and only had to go let them out. But Erts never let him down. His neighbors used to boast that he could catch fish out of a mud puddle in the road.
When Erts went fishing for himself, he preferred a Brown Hackle or a Coachman, Of the many trout he pulled out of the stream, the largest measured 23 1/2 inches and there were two of those; the first he simply hooked and landed, but the second one caused a huge commotion which involved his entire family and a Schoonmaker guest.
The guest was a gentleman angler of light experience. He, Erts, Mrs. Erts and their two children had driven down to the river to go fishing. Mrs. Erts entertained the children on the bank while the two men went on downstream. It was only a short while until she heard a yell from around the bend, "Bessie, get the kids in the front seat an start the car!"
They were careering up the road to the big house, the guest leaped out of the car carrying this enormous trout and raced up proudly to his hose saying, "John, he died in my arms!" Everyone was crowded around staring at the fish. Schoonmaker looked at it, then slowly at each of the adults, and finally he said, "Mrs. Erts, I don't believe Bob, I'm skeptical of William. Who caught that trout?"
"I'm sorry, Mr Schoonmaker," she said, "I was up in the car with the kids. I don't know." There was a long silence, then a rosy glow spread over the gathering as everyone started praising the trout and congratulating the happy angler.
William Erts was not what you would call a colorful character about whom legends typically spring up, although he deserves that kind of remembrance. It was his constancy of dedicated service, his steadfast love of the valley and its people, and the high standards he upheld for more than 70 years that made him such a special contributor to the golden era of the Catskill tradition.

Hi Walt,
I have an old photo that my husband's grandmother Esther George George (1897-2001) said was Bessie Erts. They were neighbors in Denning early last century. I think Bessie was the wife of J William Erts. They are in the 1930 census. Would you happen to know what Bessie's maiden name was?
Thank you,
Carol B.

I am interested in finding out if the Simmons from claverack, NY (poss Henry simmons b. 1752) is connected to my line of Simmons in Norfolk Ontario.

The furthest line I can muster up is a set of brothers David and John (born abt 1797 & 1795). They both state that they were born in the US in the 1851 census. There may be a George running through the line somewhere too, but not positive.

Thank you Eric for your response.

I have scanned your information and on the surface it seems to fit. My first response is that Alson Knight, Catherine's first child was born and lived in Brome. He married Betsey Cornell in 1851 in St-Armand-Est.

Do you have a date for the death of John Pickle, Jr?

I suspect that Nathaniel Knight died and is buried in the area also.

Alson ran the leather mill at Adamsville before he moved to the Boston Area.

I found George W Knight on the 1861 Census in East Farnham. He had married a woman from Poland, Maine and they lived there from about 1854-1867. I have not been able to prove That George W was born in Qc or Vt. I suspect the latter. I have found little about John A Knight and I have been able to document that Almira and Chris C Knight claimed to have been born in Qc.
It would be interesting to have the information on Catherine's siblings.

I'll try to expand this more later.

I have posted what I have at the present time on Ancestry and RootsWeb Family Trees.

The Chatham Road Tax of 1801 lists all inhabitants alongside particular roads, called "Beats". The descriptions of each "Beat" doesn't really make sense today, for example... "Beat No. 25: John Foot's to the Kinderhook Line including crossroads to the south and crossraod to Israel Phelps."

Has anybody figured out the modern names of these beats/roads today? Even better yet, does a map exist from circa 1801 showing these roads?

Thanks.
Tom

Re: John and Sarah ACKERT, circa 1820 in Chatham or Austerlitz?

Hi Melissa,

Thanks for your quick response. Perhaps our two Ackert families are related. There was also a mention that Mary's oldest son, Charles G. Ascha (1845-1915), in later life claimed (Gazeteer of Berkshire Co., Mass, 1885) that his grandfather was a "John Van Bogit" who served in the Revolutionary War "and was at the battle of Bennington. He was also aid-de-camp of Gen. Washington."

This could've only have been Mary E. Ackert's father (John Ackert--?), since Charles' other, paternal grandfather would've been an Ascha(?) Could "Van Bogit" have been a Van Volkenburgh or Van Valkenburgh, of which there were many in Chatham and Columbia Co., NY? (No "Van Bogit"s found by Googling...)

I just post this in the hope it will ring a bell with someone.

Thanks,
Michelle

I am trying to research the parents of Mary E. ACKERT, who was said to have been born in Chatham or Austerlitz, Columbia Co., NY in either 1817 or c. 1828. Her parents names were given on her death certificate as John and Sarah ACKERT. Is anyone familiar with this family?

Mary wed James ASCHA (also spelled ASKEY) of White Creek, NY (before 1845) and they moved to Bennington, Vermont; they had three children and were divorced. Then Mary wed Ward N. STONE of Worthington, Massachusetts (before 1858), and they settled in Peru, Mass. and had three sons. Mary died in Peru 10 November 1881.

Thanks for any help.

Hi again,
I found what you must already know: there were two Asa Douglas, the father lived in Stephentown, the son in Canaan. The Stephentown house isn't the one you were looking for, but obviously also was owned by your ancestors. It's odd that both Stephentown and Canaan claim their Douglas house to be the site of the Revolutionary jail. An old Douglas book says it was the Stephentown one.

Asa Douglas, Sergeant
Birth: 11 DEC 1715 in Plainfield, Windham Co., CT
Death: 12 NOV 1792 in Stephentown, Rensselaer Co., NY
Father: William Douglas , Deacon b: 19 FEB 1672 in New London, CT
Mother: Sarah [Proctor?] b: 1674 in New London, CT
Marriage: Rebecca Wheeler? b: 26 AUG 1718 in Plainfield, Windham Co., CT; 13 children.

Bio: Asa moved from Plainfield to Old Canaan, NY, about 1746, and remainded there some 20 years. In 1776 he removed with his family to what was at that time Jerico Hollow, MA, but was subsequently included in Stephentown NY. His son William preceeded him the year before. When Asa came he brought with him a company of men who cleared 30 acres of land and built a large farm house. The nearest neighbor was 4 miles a way, and they were obliged to go 14 miles to the nearest sawmill. The garret of the house was used during the Revelotionary War as a jail, there being at that time none in the county.
Eleven years later, sixty-one year old Asa Douglas struck his blow for freedom when he led a company of thirty "Silver Grays" at the Battle of Bennington, on the 16th of August, 1777, when the force of British and Indians sent to seize the stores collected at that place were defeated by the Americans under Col. John Stark. Disguised as an old farmer looking for his lost cows, Douglas acted as a spy at the siege of Ticonderoga. He left his horse outside the lines and proceeded boldly into the enemy lines. When he mounted his horse to go home, someone called, "The old farmer is a spy!" Then, as the shooting began, Asa said to his horse, "Old Ti, ride for your life and if you get me home safely, you will never be saddled again." It is said that he kept his word and "Old Ti" lived happily in the pasture for the rest of his life.
Asa continued to reside in Stephentown till the time of his death. His widow survived him some 14 years.

Asa Douglas Jr, Major
Birth: 24 DEC 1739 in Plainfield, Windham Co., CT
Death: 17 APR 1812 in Canaan, Columbia Co., NY
Father: Asa Douglas
Mother: Rebecca Wheeler
Marriage 1: Sarah Robbins b: Eastfield, CT; 10 children.
Marriage 2: ? Wynkoop b. Albany, NY.

Bio: Asa moved with his wife Sara to Canaan, NY, and became a large farmer in that town. He also raised large numbers of horses for sale.
He took part in the Revolutionary war and became a Major in the Continental Army. He made himself so troublesome to the British that a large reward was offered for his apprehension. When Burgoyne was marching from Canada to meet Clinton at Albany, and so cut off New England from the other provinces, it became necessary for Maj. Douglas to take to the woods. He spent weeks in the forests, never staying two nights in the same place. He lost all his property and was imprisioned a long time for debt.
After the death of his first wife, he married a lady by the name of Wynkoop, from Albany, whether he then removed. After spending ten years in Albany, in mercantile pursuits, he returned to Canaan, NY, where he died. He is buried, together with his wives and other of his family, in the old cemetery in that town. All his children were born there.

Bio Source: "A Collection of Family Records with Biographical Sketches Bearing the Name Douglas"; Charles Henry James Douglas, Providence, 1879.
There is an obit for Rose M. Mulvey (Mrs. Thomas Mulvey) in the Niagara Falls Gazette (on an undated page for Dec. 1962) She died Dec. 15, 1962 in Lockport. It gives her survivors as daughters Mrs. Cornelius Canahan, Mrs. Audrey Waters, Mrs. John Pokrzyko & sons Thomas & Harold Mulvey. You can find this by searching for "Thomas Mulvey" +Lockport using the all of the words search at http://www.fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html

Thomas Mulvey is on the 1920 census with his parents Patrick & Sarah & four brothers in Lockport.

You would probably have better luck posting on the Niagara Co. board for this family.

Pat R.

My GG Grandfather was David Lewis. On the 1855 NY Census he is listed as being born in Columbia County on 11 Nov. 1796 and moved to Verona, Oneida, NY when he was 6 years old. He was married to Margaret Williams in Verona and died in Verona.
They had 14 children. He was a farmer. Can anyone give me leads to his parents and siblings names?

Hello Joan,

I just tried to post, but ancestry.com gave me an error, so I'm going to try again!

I see that we're cousins, Asa Douglass jr is my 6th Great Grandfather. I descend from his daughter Sarah Douglass.

Anyhow, I visited Stephentown and Canaan last year. I'm attaching some pictures for you. One is the historic marker, the second is a shot of the Douglass House, a third is a bird's eye view. I've also attached a picture of his tombstone. As you can see, the actual spelling is Douglass.

I have quite a bit of information on the Douglass line, I've gathered quite a bit myself as well as collaborating with other cousins of ours.

I'm going to try attaching the pictures one at a time, because it keeps giving me an error.

Take care!
Landon Canida
