I have recently purchased a Kurtzman & Hinze square grand piano. The face says they were from Buffalo NY.
The Pierce Piano Book shows those pianos were only manufactured in 1859. However, I find Christian Kurtzman first on an 1870 Buffalo census as a piano maker, his son Frederick as an apprentice piano maker, and next door to them is the John Heintz family with son, Louis, showing as a piano maker. The 1860 census has an Adolphus E Hunze listed as a Piano Maker.
I was wondering if there is anyone who has access to any Buffalo history that could give me additional information on the Kurtzman & Hinze company in particular, or the Kurtzman company in general? Google searches have provided very little.
