John Wildey (Wilde/Wiley) b. ca 1765 & wife Mary Ann Ame, settled in Greene Co, NY before 1810. First they lived near his sister Mary (Wildey)Rickerson in Durham. By the 1820s they had a saw mill on Sawmill Creek. Finally they settled in Cairo, where they were last found in the census of 1850. By the time of the 1855 NY State Census they had vanished... as had all Wildeys.

I am assuming that since they were in their 80s, they had passed away there & their children had moved on.

Greene County, researching Lockwood

I'm going to be in Greene County for (unfortunately) just a couple of days the last part of September to do some research on my Lockwood family line (Henry, b. 1810 and Mary (Brooks) Lockwood, b. 1813; their son Lorenzo Lockwood, b. 1843). I know from various census reports they've at least lived in Jewett, Halcott, and Lexington.

I'm going to stay in West Coxsackie (and hit the Vedder Library the Tuesday I'm there). I'm particularly interested in Greene County state census info, vital statistics, cemetery and church info (apparently Lorenzo's brother Milo is buried in the East Jewett Methodist Episcopal Church cemetery's old section), perhaps some research into land info (since the family were farmers).

Would there be any other local library or government office I could go to the Monday I'm there to do research? I'd appreciate any suggestions. I'm hoping with some advance planning I'll be able to get the biggest researchable "bang" for the time I'm there.

Patti Barry

State Census search for Samuel Baker.... Any Help?

I'm looking for someone willing to look up the 1905 and 1915 State census in Catskill, NY. I am looking for the following group (family) Samuel Baker born 1858, Edith Annabelle born @1873, Henry (last name could be Townley from first marraige) 1903, Edward 1904, Leighton 1907, Irving 1909. Edith had chilren from her first marraige that were named Townley George 1894, Clinton or Clifford 1898, Minard 1900. I am also looking for Samuel at home with his parents in 1855, 1865, 1875 and 1892. His pparents lived in Catskill their names were Henry and Harriet (Adams) Baker. I am hoping to answer some questions as to where samuel was and with whom and when. I need to get a birth/death certificate for my grandfather Leighton Robert Baker born 1904 died in Oswego 1959. That one should be easy for me but Samuel born in 1858 might be harder. What can I find , seeing that they did not have birth certificates yet in 1858, to prove who his parents are? I have a Samuel and Leighton right ages in Ressnelear in 1920 fed census. I have Samuel as a widow. So this is quite possibly my Samuel and Leighton which would mean that Samuel may have been alive til at least 1920. I do not know when he died or where he is buried. I dont know when Edith Annabelle died either. Samuel and Edith were married in 1901, second marriages for both of them. Samuels first wife is unknown to me at the time. I live in New Hampshire and do not know the Catskill area at all and how they kept records. Did they have city directories at all? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you Cindy Cokevw2000@yahoo.com

Greene County Homes Tour in Palenville - June 7, 2008

Annual Tour of Homes to Feature Palenville

The Greene County Historical Society will hold its 32nd annual Tour of Homes in Palenville on Saturday, June 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Nestled at the foot of the Kaaterskill Clove, Palenville was well established as a tourist destination in the heyday of the Catskill Mountain House. Its location just beneath the Catskill Mountains, its scenic views, waterfalls and streams made it a Mecca for Hudson River School artists. This is the area associated with Rip Van Winkle and his famous 20-year sleep. Here also the Otis Elevated Railway carried countless visitors up the last leg of their trip to the Mountain House.

This year's tour features several of the historic hotels that made Palenville famous, a Victorian Bed & Breakfast, the beautiful, stone Gloria Dei Church, a Mountain Villa with spectacular Hudson Valley views, a classic Arts & Crafts style home, creek side homes with waterfall access, the Palenville Swinging Bridge and more. This is the first homes tour to be held in the Palenville area so all sites are new.

Tour headquarters will be at Maple Grove Resort on Route 23A in Palenville. Tickets are $20 the day of the tour; $15 in advance. Participants will receive a packet of material about the sites along with a marked route map. The tour will be held rain or shine.

To reserve advance sale tickets, send a check payable to GCHS to: Greene County Historical Society, P.O. Box 44, Coxsackie, NY 12051. Advance sale ticket reservations must be received by June 2. The tickets will be available with your tour packet at Maple Grove on June 7.

Proceeds from the sale of tour tickets support the Greene County Historical Society and its national historic landmarks, the Bronck House Museum and Thomas Cole's Cedar Grove, as well as the Vedder Research Library.

For more information, call tour committee chair Terez Limer at (518) 966-8131 or GCHS President Robert Hallock at (518) 756-8805.

For more information on the historical society including upcoming events and membership information, please visit our website at www.gchistory.org

Bagley Families in Greene county NY in 1820

I am looking for the family of John A. BAGLEY, who was born in New York State in 1820 (NOT the John A Bagley who was born 3/31/1820 in Clarence to John and Anne Edwards Bagley). In looking at the 1820 census, I find two families who could be our John's parents: Samuel and his family lived in Windham and he had two little boys under 10 at the time of the 1820 census; Henry and his wife were also parents to one child in 1820, a son under 10 (very likely an infant).

Does anybody know anything about these two families, or how I might learn more about them? John was living in Michigan in 1840 and is the father of two children by his first wife: Roseltha Jane, born in 1842, and Duane Henry, born in 1845, both in Michigan. Duane Henry is my mom's great grandfather. We would love to know how our little family fits in with the rest of the Bagleys and have heard that those in Greene County, NY emigrated from a different place than those who descended through Orlando Bagley. Can anyone help?

I am looking for information on the STOKES family.

Thomas STOKES was born about 1790 in Eng. I'm not sure when he came to the US. I find him and his family living in Greene County, NY from at least 1830 – 1850.

Thomas was a Baptist preacher and/or missionary. According to a bio of his son, William H. STOKES, Thomas' first wife was named Ruth APSEY who died around 1830. Thomas later married Phebe Unknown.

In 1850, a George STOKES is living with Thomas and Phebe in Athens, Greene County.

Thomas and Phebe eventually followed son William to Illinois.

I would love to know more: other family members, immigration info, church records. Please let me know if you are researching this family.

Thanks,
Debbi
There was one old house there that was torn down, and an old house on the corner. Also, a little yellow house that sits at the very end.

Its the little yellow house I am interested in, who owned the land and/or house years ago, maybe some old pictures of the area, road or house.

Thank You
Judy

Joel M. and Mariah (Applebee) Ford of Greene Co. NY md/late 1800s

Joel M. Ford and Mariah Applebee were married circa 1844 in Greene Co. NY. They are last together as a family at the time of the 1860 census, living in Lexington, Greene Co. NY.

Joel is found in the 1880 census still living in Greene Co. NY, but he appears to have a new (and much younger) wife.

It is unclear whether Mariah had died, or whether the marriage ended by divorce, since in 1870 there is a Mariah Ford living in Cordova, Rock Island County IL who could be Joel's ex-wife (Mariah had a sister living there, and it appears two of her sons are also living there at the same time; meanwhile, the youngest child of Joel and Mariah is that year living with another family back in Greene Co. NY).

The children of Joel M. Ford and his wife Mariah Applebee were (in chronological order):

1. Christina Ford: born 1845 New York; lived 1860 Lexington, Greene Co. NY
2. John Ford; born 1847 New York; lived 1860 Lexington, Greene Co. NY
3. Jacob E. Ford: born 1850 New York; lived 1870 Cordova, Rock Island Co. IL; married 7-7-1876 Rock Island Co. IL to Flora E. Reeves
4. Frank Ford: born 1852 New York; lived 1870 Cordova, Rock Island Co. IL
5. Charles Ford: born 1854 New York; lived 1860 Lexington, Greene Co. NY
6. Elizabeth Ford: born 1857 New York; lived 1860 Lexington, Greene Co. NY
7. Corydon Ford: born 1859 New York; lived 1870 Windham, Greene Co. NY

Any additional information regarding these family members would be appreciated!

Ancestors??? Devilia Boton(1809-1868) married 1834 to Charity Sleight(1812-1897)

DEVILIA is a strange name! One would think it would STAND OUT and be NOTICED. However, the only thing I've been able to find out, is that it's a French female name. Go figure. A possibility is that he was from France or possibly the name used to be Boulton or Bouton.

Now to the important stuff. The earliest Devilia has been placed is Lexington, Greene County, NY in 1833. Before he moved his family to Illinois and founded the small village of Bolton, IL, he was last known to be living in Walton, Delaware County, NY. I know this because the Delaware County GenWeb site shows the birth of their 3rd child, Mary Louisa, occuring on 8-28-1848 under Delaware County births for that year and the parents home is listed as WALTON. His name was spelled DAVILIA instead of Devilia on the document. I have also seen it spelled DEVILLA.

Looking at the 1850 census I noticed there were other Boltons in the Walton area at that time. DOES ANYONE HAVE ACCESS TO THE DELAWARE COUNTY 1840 CENSUS? This may help me out a great deal.

Anyway, Devilia and Charity moved their family around 1849 or 1850 to Stephenson County, IL where they bought land in 1850 and homesteaded. My source was the on-line IL Data Landbase.

More specifically, Devilia was born 10-8-1809, place unknown and died 4-2-1868, Stephenson County, IL. Charity Sleight Bolton was born 4-12-1812, in Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, NY. and died 2-14-1897, Stephenson County, IL. I have Charity's ancestors.

Devilia and Charity were married 1-12-1834 in Fleischmanns, formerly known as Griffins Corner, Delaware County, NY. Besides their child Mary Louisa, as noted above, Devilia and Charity had 2 more children who survived childhood. Fenno Delorenzo, born 12-29-1834 and Loretta Amanda, born abt 1839. FENNO DELORENZO is another strange name. It almost sounds Italian. Boy, am I confused.

It would just make my year if I could find Devilia's ancestors, parents, or siblings.

Capt. Hinman, 1780's settler of Durham

In the Beers History of Greene County, in the early settlement of Durham, reference is made to a Capt. Hinman:
"...who settled in De Wittsburgh and its vicinity during the eighties of the last century. We find the names of ...Captain Hinman, ...
Captain Hinman was a soldier in the French and Indian war of 1755. He held the office of captain at that time, and was under the command of General Washington at Braddock’s defeat before Pittsburg, in July of that year. He also participated in the Revolutionary war. He and his family had suffered so much from the Indians, that he naturally felt a strong dislike to them. On one occasion he attended an "Indian show" in Oak Hill, and so excited did he become, that it was with difficulty that he could be restrained from wreaking vengeance upon them. He lived where Mrs. Harry Peck now does; but he moved to Ohio where he died."

Does anyone know anything further about this individual, specifically his first name? A William Hinman lived in Freehold by 1800 census records, but he was born 1755-1774, too young to be Capt. Hinman.

Please forgive me if this is off-topic, but I'm curious if anyone knows what currency was used in Greene Co 1812-1820. I ask because Christopher Watrous' account book shows all transactions in pounds shillings and pence, using the old British system. Were the residents using British currency or was he converting US currency to the more familiar British ?

Emma is only 4. I cannot find Emma again until 1900 in Ulster county. By then she is married and has a family of her own. I'm trying to find either/both in 1870, 1880 and 1890, if possible. Any one have any clues?

I'm desperately seeking information about David Case b 1783 in Greene County NY. This branch of my husbands tree stops cold with this guy. I know that he married Julia Case (yes, same last name) in Goshen in 1811 and that he died in Goshen in 1819 in a mill accident at the age of 36. He is buried in Goshen but was apparently born somewhere in Greene county. It's driving me nuts that I can't find anything anywhere about this guy prior to him marrying Julia.

He married 1 Rosanna Burgess 1822-1862 and 2 Lydia Searles Ireland 1822-1893 on 12 Jun 1864.
William's parents were Christopher Watrous (Waterous, Waters) 17 Dec 1782-3 Mar 1831 and Lucy Sears 1793-06 Mar 1879. William and his brother Phineas left New Durham for Chenango County NY in the mid 1800's.

McKenna/Countryman in Catskill

I've stopped cold with Robert T McKenna(b. 1879) and Emma Countryman.(b.1888). I found them in the 1910 Federal Census in Greene Co on Main Street in Catskill. Census indicates they were married approx 1908. They are living with Walter w.and Adeline M Countryman, whose ages indicate possible a brother to Emma. I cannot find any of them in the 1900 census. I have found them in 1920 and 1930 Federal census, with children Edmond, Marion and Theresa. Does anyone have any thoughts on where to look next? Anyone researching these families?

William Eddy Carr

It is with deep regret that I write to say that my father, William Eddy Carr, died Sunday morning, April 2, in Alpena MI. He had just had his 89th birthday last Sunday.
He was born March 26, 1917, to Waldo Eugene and Clara Eddy Carr. He graduated from Alma College in 1941, served in the Army Air Corps during World War Two. He married Margaret Davison in 1947. He was a Math teacher and a football coach, as well as a coach of other sports, during his career at Alpena High School, Alma College, and Bay City Handy High School. He retired in 1979, and he and my mother spent their summers at the cottage he built at Hubbard Lake and their winters at Pharr, TX. Like his ancestors, he had a love of the land, and a talent for carpentry, building houses and furniture during his lifetime.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret, son David (Connie) Carr, and daughter Christine (Ted) Reese. He also is survived by the following grandchildren; Jennie and Sarah Carr, Megan (David) Rios, Elizabeth Reese, Jason (Lauren) Reese, Stacie (Jody) Desander, and great-grandchildren; David William Alejos Rios, Alexis Ranee Desander, Nicole April, Brandon Paul and Marissa Clare Reese. Bill was fortunate to see and to hold all his littlest grandchildren just 2 weeks ago, for the first time. He will be particularly missed by his little dog, Sammy.
Bill will be cremated with a memorial service to be held on Saturday, April 8, at the Presbyterian Church, Alpena MI., at 11 a.m.

Law Family of Windham, Greene Co., NY

I'm trying to connect my Samuel A. Law (Aug. 17, 1808 NY-May 3, 1888, Delaware Co., NY) to the family of Samuel Law and Huldah ? who resided in Windham. Samuel & Huldah lived in Argyle, Washington Co. prior to their move to Greene Co. some time after 1800. Samuel appears on the 1810-1830 census records for Windham. Huldah appears in 1840 as head of household, next door to son Asa. Their children have been given as Elizabeth, b. 1796, m. Peter Caverly; Joseph (Rev.), 1798-1861, m. Polly Barton; Warren/Orrin, b. 1800, m. Cynthia Morgan, daughter of Hatfield Morgan; Lois, b. abt. 1802; Asahel/Asa, b. abt. 1804-1871, m. Cynthia Wade; and, Samuel b. 1808. Any help would be appreciated.
