I'm looking for help in locating the grave of my greatgrandfather Louis Washburn. I believe he died in 1914 while living in North River. His father, grandfather and ggrandfather are buried in the Weavetown cemetary but I cannot locate his grave. It's possible he was buried at Indian Lake or North River. Unfortunately older family members say the grave may have never been marked. Thanks for any help.

Kathan Family Reunion

Hello! We are planning a Kathan Family Reunion at Lake George, NY on Aug 8-10, 2008. We would like to hear from you if you are or think that you might be a descdendant of Capt. John Kathan who settled in the area of Brattleboro/Putney Vermont in 1752. The first Kathan Family Reunion was held in Putney in 2003. A Planning committee was set up to plan another reunion in 5 years. Lake George was picked because Capt. John Kathan fought in the battle of Lake George, Sept. 8, 1755 in the French and Indian War. According to a history of Northfield, Mass. John Kathan enlisted in the Northfield militia to be a part of the Crown Point expedition. They never made it, but fought battles at Lake George and built Fort William Henry, which turn was bombarded and destroyed in 1758. The fort was rebuilt about 50 years ago and is the focal point of the 250th anniversary.
Some other family names are: Moore/Moor, Baird/Beard, Bigleow, Frost, Carpenter, Willard, Gill, Dutton,Sargent, Lamb etc.
For more info contact B. W. Kathan, 229 Cheshire Rd, Prospect, CT 06712, jckccoa@aol.com or dishuttle@airbits.com Hope to see you!

James and Loretta (Flansburg) Snow

James Snow and wife Loretta first appeared in Town of Wells census 1830. Also were in census for 1840, 1850 and 1860. With ages given in census, James must have been born about 1793- 4. In 1850, and 1860 census, he stated he was from Canada. Son Daniel died in Civil War, but his papers said his mother was a Flansburg. Son William Snow was Born Wells June 1, 1832 (from death cert. Town of Day). William married Sarah Greenfield and was also in the Civil War (wounded). Clarissa (called Clara) Snow, daug. of James and Loretta, md. a Wells from Town of Wells.
James and Loretta are Joan's great great grandparents. Does anyone have a clue as to who were parents of James and/or Loretta, and where in Canada James came from? Any info on either James or Loretta would be very welcome.

Crombie Questions
Who was Jane, the wife of George Crombie? We don't know much about her except that she was born in England and died in Lake Pleasant, Hamilton, NY in 1907. She was 86 years old according to the local paper. George Crombie and his family arrived in the port of New York July 5, 1850. According to the passenger list of the ship, Martha's Vineyard, the family consisted of George Crambia 35, George Crambia 6, Bastencia Crambia 4, Elizabeth Crambia 34, John Crambia 13, Margt Crambia 8.

George and family are listed in the 1860 census of Albany, George Crumby 40, engineer, Jane 40, George 16, silversmith, Barbara 14, all born Scotland. I haven't found John in the 1860 census, but he and his family were in Albany in 1870. Margaret married David Aird in 1859. George, the son, moved west, settling in Chicago. George's children were born in IL. Finding this family in census records is a challenge, the name has been spelled so many ways including Crandy.

My presumption is that Jane's "legal" name was Elizabeth, and either she was called Jane, or her name was Jane Elizabeth. Daughter Margaret married David Aird, son of James and Margaret--the first three children were Asa James, Jane Elizabeth and George Crombie. Was this a modified use of a Scottish naming convention.

I think I have found George Sr. in the 1841 census for Scotland, but he is not married. He is living with a couple who I guess, based on ages, were his parents, another George and Margaret. What then about John, born about 1837. According to descendants (I'm not sure who told me this) George had a son and Margaret had a half sister who married a Griffin and lived in Amsterdam, NY. Was this John, and if it was, who was his mother. Or was this a reference to George the son?

I welcome any ideas In genealogy, no matter how hard we try, we can't make circumstantial evidence into definite proof without the proper primary evidence.

There was a Michael and Barbara Griffin, she was born in the right year, in Scotland, who lived in Amsterdam, Montgomery Co, and for a while in Wells, Hamilton Co, where George and Jane lived.

John Crombie married Ann and had 5 children, Sarah, Mary, Loretta, Rose and one other based on the 1900 census.

George married Marie and had George Aber, Richard Visser, Marie E, 4 others based on the 1900 census, and adopted Astella.

Indian Lake residents born in Washington County 1847-1849

I have the list of births, deaths and marriages in Washington County for 1847-1849. Some of these people had moved to Indian Lake. The book does not include Fort Ann for the year 1848. I have found that the writer did miss at least one 1847 birth that is in the archive records, so there may be others.

Hinkley/Cowles/Boardman Family of Hamilton & Fulton Cos

Rodman Stewart here. (My nom de web derives from the fact that these folks seemed to be "out behind the barn" whenever the census taker or records keeper came around, so I might as well be, too. :0))
Tiring of old Massachusetts, Benjamin-5 Cowles, son of Nathaniel-4, b. 10 Dec 1769 at Tyringham, MA; d. 1 May 1854 at Corinth, NY, moved over the Mohawk Trail to Mayfield Town, Fulton Co., NY around 1799. He had already married Rosanna-5 Boardman, dau. of Lieut. Daniel and Sarah (Stockwell) Boardman of Sheffield, MA, 11 Apr 1791 in Sheffield. Tired of waiting for them to dam the Sacandaga River, and not knowing that George Hinkley would be in Wells just about 60 years later, they then moved to Greenfield Center, NY, where if they had stayed, they might have met Nathan Hinkley in 1820 just south of there in Milton, Saratoga Co. Finally, tiring of life away from the Hudson, they settled at "Jessup's Landing," now Corinth Village near where the Sacandaga joins the Hudson. They were followed there, hopefully by a less circuitous route, by his in-laws Daniel and Sarah Boardman, finally ending up on the north side of Hudson in Hadley. Between Benjamin being on the court of Common Pleas in 1812, and representing them in the General Assembly in 1815, Benjamin sired the standard 9 children. (He was also Keeper of the Poor House in 1827.) Their 1st born was Nathaniel Cowles, b. 12 Feb 1793; d. 6 Oct 1869, who m. Elizabeth Early (who d. 29 Dec 1869). Among their 10 or so children was Rosanna Cowles, b. about 1813, d. 8 Jun 1887.
All the above information is established in "Cowles Families in America" by Col. Calvin Cowles, 1929, except Rosanna's parentage. I am seeking "proof" of one sort or another that Rosanna was indeed the daughter of Nathaniel and Elizabeth. This is needful for me to establish my bona fides to join the Sons of the American Revolution, for both Nathaniel-4 and Lieut. Daniel-4 Boardman were veterans, however briefly, of that conflict.
To complete the connection, Miss Rosanna met and married George Hinkley (Sr.) b. about 1813 in Saratoga Co., NY. They probably lived first in Wells, Hamilton Co., NY, and had started their family there by the 1840 Census. Not to let moss grown on them, they were then in Northampton Town, Fulton Co. by 1845. Then they put down roots and abode there until the 1880s, probably being buried in Northville. The usual 9 children were George (Jr.), Nathaniel*, Augustus, Eliza, Ulysses, Melissa, John, and Lydia (twice.) George Jr. (abt. 1835-1901) married Maria GROESBECK, whose parentage I would love to discover, but mustn't be greedy, had a daughter Ida, and then married Hannah RUSSELL (1843-1908), of the Northville Russells. Before Jr and Hannah settled in Greenwich, Washington Co., NY, he did a stint in the woods of Day Town, Saratoga Co., which is of course, not far from the old folks in Northville. George Jr. and Hannah had the more late-19th-Century-standard 5 children Wright, Dora, Rittie Bell, Claude and Daniel, the last of whom changed the spelling to Hinckley and had 5 children: Kenneth, Clyde, Maxine, Beatrice, and Donald, the children of 3 or 4 of them still above ground.
If you connect in any way with these, or have the old Cowles Family Bible on the mantle with Rosanna's parentage (or any other info), I would consider it my pleasure to make your acquaintance.
(That asterisk * next to Nathaniel Hinkley's name indicates that I know he is mentioned on the Hamilton Co. Website, having died @56 in Northville in 1893. That mentions Rosanna Cowles being the wife of George (Sr.) but I find that fact nowhere else. And, yes, I checked the NYS Library in Albany.)

Looking for connections to the Russell family that lived in Hamilton co. I have quite a few but have not made very many connections.

Margaret Russell b. 1864 was the dau. of John VanNess Russell (1811) and Harriet Masten. John's other children were Alice, Mary, Elnora.

Margaret married Herbert Henry Carpenter. John ran the Belmont Hotel and Herbert Carpenter learned hotel management from him and ran other hotels in the area.

I THINK this John VanNess Russell was the son of Daniel (1774) and Mary Russell who lived north of Hope, Hamilton co., in the town of Wells. I also think that Mary was Mary VanNess. If so, John is brother to David (1814) and William F. (1815) married to Gettie Abbott.

Also living in the same area were Seymour, Joel and William. sons of???

Would love to hear from someone related to these people.

Hi y'all. In order for me to connect to the Revolutionary War soldier Nathaniel Cowles, I need proof that his gr-granddau. Rosanna (1813-1887) was the dau. of another Nathaniel Cowles. A posting from Annie Weaver "Hamilton Co. News 1893" included an important mention of Rosanna and her husband George Hin(c)kley regarding son Nathaniel Hinckley's death. I need to contact her or someone who has access to the original material which she transcribed. This is vital to my application to become a Son of the American Rev. Thanks for your help.
Catlin & Cole in Long Lake

At one point I was researching the possibility that one of my ancestors was Daniel Catlin, born about 1808, who was listed in the 1850 Ticonderoga, Essex County census. The family moved to Long Lake, Hamilton County (wife Betsy, children Huldah, Phebe and Laura). They are listed in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census of Long Lake. After much research, I discovered that the Cole family of Long Lake, who intermarried with the Daniel Catlin family, was not the correct Cole family, and not mine! However, for anyone who IS descended from this family, I came across something that should be of interest. I was reading the June 2006 issue of "Architectural Digest" and saw an ad for an Art Gallery that caught my eye. It was a painting by Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, painted at Long Lake, Adirondacks, New York, in 1887 called "Dan Catlins's Home". It's a lovely painting of a log house, with a hunting dog in the doorway. If I WERE a descendant of this family, I'd love to know that this painting exists, and that you can probably obtain a print, or at the least, a photograph of the painting. Hope this helps someone out there!
Seeking information on the Travis family of Hope Falls NY. Mary Travis(born 1792 died 1872) daughter of Abraham Travis married John Corey. They later settled in the Northampton area of Fulton Co. NY. Mary's father Abraham was born in 1765 Dutchess Co. NY. We understand Mary had the following siblings: Henry, Thomas & Ezra who grew up in Hope, Hamilton Co. Some information indicates Hope was Renssalaer County. My assumption is the county line changed as it did in Norhampton alternating from Fulton to Montgomery Counties and vice versa. If you know anything of this family or those they married into please contact me directly at email rcorey1998@comcast.net

She married Clarence Rice of long Lake in 1919. We're at a loss to find out any more info on her or her birth parents. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Letson born abt. 1857 in Hope, Hamilton Co. married Charlotte (Lottie) Groff. William was probably the son of Charles Letson (abt 1829) married to Margaret. According to census records they had another son Daniel E. Letson born abt. 1860. I'd really appreciate any information on this Letson family.
Charlotte was the daughter of Eliphalet Groff and Martha J. Conklin. She was born 1862 and died in 1883.
WILLIAM HAMILTON of Lancaster Co., SC

Looking for information on the WILLIAM HAMILTON family who lived next door to the SAMUEL MCCLURE family in 1790. These two families are found in the 1790 census of Lancaster Co., SC and are living on the Little Lynches Creek land as neighbors.

It is believed that MARTHA HAMILTON was the daughter of WILLIAM HAMILTON who married JOHN RANKIN (called RANKIN) MCCLURE as the two families lived so close to each other. However, there is no proof of this.

RANKIN and MARTHA HAMILTON, MCCLURE married in South Carolina and had a very large family .

RANKIN's brother, SAMUEL MCCLURE, JR., and his wife ELIZABETH MCWHORTER, moved from Little Lynches Creek, SC to Clarke Co., AL abt 1815 and SAMUEL died almost immediately after they arrived leaving a widow and also a very large number of chidren. .

Shortly after SAMUEL's death, there is a 1816 deed in Lancaster Co., SC, that records a real estate sale by RANKIN MCCLURE and MARTHA HAMILTON, MCCLURE when the property on Little Lynches Creek "inherited from his father SAMUEL MCCLURE" was sold--the document was signed by both RANKIN and MARTHA HAMILTON, MCCLURE.

Shortly after this sale, this HAMILTON/MCCLURE family moved to Monroe Co., AL which adjoined Clarke Co., AL where RANKIN's brother SAMUEL's widow and children resided. It is reported that JOHN RANKIN MCCLURE died in 1822.

His widow MARTHA HAMILTON, MCCLURE was listed in the 1830 census still living in her home with several children. Later, she is living in the home of a son, ELI MCCLURE, in the 1840 census in Monroe Co., AL. When she died is unknown but this is the last report of MARTHA HAMILTON, MCCLURE found to date.

I'm hoping to find some documentation on MARTHA HAMILTON and any HAMILTON's who may have been related to her. Hopefully, she will be found to be the daughter of WILLIAM HAMILTON. I have no other HAMILTON information to connect to.

Thanks for any/all help in finding my HAMILTON ancestors.

Joyce McClure

Laura Young Wood in shown in the Indian Lake 1920 census, married to Elvis Wood. She was born NY, He was born Kansas. They have a son , Herbert, 1 yr. 9 months old. Believe Laura to be daughter of Lafayette Young and Jennie Brown Young of North River. Jennie Brown Young was the daughter of George E. Brown , George was the brother of Josiah Prentiss Brown of Indian Lake who is buried in the Cedar River Cemetery. George E. and daughter Laura Young Wood are buried in the North River Cemetery in Warren county. Can anyone give me information to verify this? also, cannot find Laura , Elvis or Herbert after the 1920 census, anyone else have info on them? Thanks.

Looking for information about Gurdon Conklin. Was he related to Isaac Conklin of Hope, Hamilton Co,NY???

Gurdon Conklin is listed in the 1860 census of Hadley Township, in West Day, Saratoga Co. He had a daughter Caroline A. who was born about 1839 and a son Daniel about 1847.

Also listed in the same census was Albert Conklin 1807 married to Sarah Ann born about 1810 witha son Mandelbert born about 1837.

Albert and Gurdon were probably brothers.

These might have been nephews (or even children) of Isaac Conklin and Christina. Isaac was born about 1760 and died in 1848 in Hope which isn't far from West Day or Hadley.

According to a descendant of Darwin Parker and Sophronia Lanphear, Leander and Abigail Lanphear were buried in Parkerville Cemetary. The Whitehall Times newspaper states that Leander died January 11, 1875 and Abigail died August 18, 1876. Looking for information verifing Abigail's maiden name, this information may be on the death certificates of her children George d. Dec 1913, Henry Wesley d. 1901, Albert d. April 1903, Lorinda Plue d.Oct 1909. Other Children were Sarah Bell, Leander Jr d. 1855, and Sophronia.

I was told of a diary that contained the following: August 7, 1882 went to Mr Bell's wake. We assume this is James Bell son of Hiram, we do not find him after 1880.
Hiram Bell was still alive in 1884 there is a newspaper account that tells of Robert Lindsey assaulting him on June 22, which led to Charles Bell shooting Robert.

Darwin Parker died March 31, 1908 and buried Indian Lake Cem. this was found among family records.
I would like any information I can get on these families. Stewart and Stuart are same family line, they just decided to change the spelling around WWI. My Grandmother's father was Elmer Stuart of Wells, NY and her mother Virginia Palmer. Virginia's mother Margaret Betenell worked as a servant for the Stuart family in the early 1900s (1920 or thereabouts). Virginia Palmer's father was a Cherokee by the name of Edwin Palmer who was born in Indian Lake, NY in the late 1800s (1882 or so). Virginia was born in 1904. Any information anyone can give would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

I have the marriage documents for James T O'Brien (possibly O'Brian) and Louisa Sage married in Nanaimo BC Canada on October 10, 1880. He was 26, she was 18. James' parents are Thomas O'Brien and Mary. On the marriage documents, it says that James was born in Holy Ann, New York. I'm afraid in all my searching, I cannot find a Holy Ann, so I wondered if it was a church or a neighbourhood within a city/county. I'm not very familiar with New York State, so I apologize, ahead of time, if I am asking the wrong person.

I was wondering if Thomas and Mary turned up on the 1860 census, along with other children that they may have had.

If this is not in your area, could you please let me know the area that I should be researching in.

Thank you for your time.

Wendy
Vancouver Island GenWeb Project Volunteer Co-ordinator
