I am looking for someone who can make a copy of a particular record from St Mary's church in Clayton.
From the FANTASTIC Jefferson County genealogy site, I know that my ggggrandfather Oliver Lachance married my ggggrandmother Catherine Myron on Feb 11, 1854 at St Mary's -- it's on Page 57, and they were married by Fr. Michael Guth. I really want to get a copy of the record. I am glad to pay postage copying & reasonable fee for your time.

I would also be pleased to get a copy of my gggrandmother's baptism, Virgina Lachance, born Jun 27, 1858, from the same church -- baptised Jun 29, 1858 -- page 59, again by Fr. Michael Guth.

HI Everyone
I am always looking for website's about Jefferson Co. genealogy or
history. I have found they both go hand in hand. I wondered how many of
you have ever been on Marc Moshier's web site's. He does a great job of
telling the history at "A History of The Jefferson Co., Region". I go
back from time to time just rereading his information. While I was
there the other day I ran across a gold mine of old abandoned buildings
on one of his sites. I ended up spending the whole day just looking
at them. Some I remember when they were up and running. I live in
Florida but still visit family in Watertown as often as I can. I posted
the link to his one site and you will find links to the other sites on
his first page. He also has a yahoo group site called Jefferson Co.,
Wiki with a lot of information on it. Hope you enjoy them as much as I
did. He married Anna Kilborn and had probably 5 children: Angeline, Merinda, Truman, Caroline and Emaretta. I am not positive abt. Angeline, who married Samuel Swartwout of Jefferson Co., NY.
Ransom lived on Grindstone Island and appears to have farmed land on the south side of the island facing the town of Clayton. (1850, 1860 & 1870 censuses.) He is buried with his wife, Anna in the Thurso Cemetery. Any info appreciated. Phyllis

Sanford Baker b. 1811 NY Wife Grace Ann?

I am interested in the Sanford BAKER family. A brief biography of Mr. Baker in a history of northern Michigan states that he was born in Oneida Co. NY in 1811, moved to Jefferson Co. when he was 20 y.o. He stayed there at least 8 years, then moved to the Belleville area of Ontario, Canada. He became wealthy as a lumberman, and moved next to Cheboygan, MI (~1870) where he formed a lumber company.

He probably married (maybe Grace Ann ???)while in Jefferson Co. and started his family there. Does anyone have this family on the census of 1840? Does anyone know the history of this family or the names of his wife and children?

Thanks for any help that might come.

Vanessa

Puffer family from Watertown, Jefferson, New York

My grandfather, Guy Rainsford Puffer was born in this area in 1917. His mother, Jennie E. Reid born 1898, supposedly worked at a ski resort where she met his father. The 1930 census lists her and her two sons living at home with her mother and father, Sumner Reid.
She is listed with the last name Puffer in this census but I have been having a lot of trouble finding any information on her husband. I found another Guy R. Puffer from this area born in 1893 in this area but can't find any documented connection between the two.
Does anyone have any tips on how to get more information?

Can anyone provide information about the Watertown NY photographic studios listed below?

Our family has handed down a large red velvet photogaph album from the late 1800s which may have belonged originally to George Byron Calhoun 1870-1909 of Watertown, Jefferson, NY. Only two of the individuals are identified, and only two photos have dates (1890 and 1903).

The photos were taken at the following locations:

Arcade Gallery, Paddock Arcade
Arcade Gallery, Hart, Beach & Hart
Chas. S. Hart, over post office
Hart's
J.C. Banta
Johnson Bros Portraits, Hubbard Block
Johnson Bros Studios, { Cazenovia & Watertown NY
Johnson Bros, Van Namee Block
The Johnson Studio, Johnson & Budlong
Paddock Arcade
Sargeant, Public Square, opposite fountain
Slocum, Smith Building
T.S. Hewke or Hawke, Hubbard Block
Will Hart's Studio, 15 Marble Block

Knowing when the various studios operated from each location could help us narrow down the dates for these photos. All are in excellent condition. Of course ideally we would love to identify the relatives as well.

Many thanks!
I'm trying to flesh out info re IV, V, VI, and VII generation of CLARK families descendant from Haddam CT founder, WILLIAM CLARK (b circa 1610. d. Bet. July 22, 1681 - March 15, 1681/82. m. KATHERINE BUNCE). WILLIAM CLARK (V gen) (b 1765, E. Haddam, CT. d 6/13/1849, Pinckney, Lewis co), is stated in " Genealogical and Family History of No. NY" Vol II, pg 475,(Wm R Cutter, 1910, Lewis Hist Publ Co), as having"... settled in Oneida county, then in Jefferson county, then later in the town of Pinckney, Lewis county, in 1837. He was a farmer. He married SOPHRONIA POST (I love that name), and had issue." His son WILLIAM HENRY CLARK (b. 11/12/1810, Haddam CT. d. 1849, Pinckney, NY. m. ALMA JEFFERS,"of Pinckney", 11/1840) had sons: CHARLES EPHRAIM CLARK (my line)(b.1842, Pinckney, NY. m. 5/8/1866, FLORA LOOMIS "of Champion, NY") LUCIUS HENRY CLARK, WILLIAM G. CLARK, and DAVID ALBA CLARK. Lucius shows up in a 1875 map (http://www.rootsweb.com/~nylewis/copenhag.jpg) of Copenhagen, NY, as does what would become "a popular hostelry",the Davenport House, where CHARLES EPHRAIM CLARK, and his son ROBERT EPHRAIM CLARK (B. Adams, NY, 3/3/1875. m. EDNA MABEL LESTER 9/17/1903),would serve as proprieter and clerk/assistant, circa 1910. (the article sited above starts out "The Clarks of Copenhagen...")
If any if this makes enough sense to respond to, I'd love to hear from you.

Harold E Eggleston in Watertown

I am researching my family line, in doing so I came across a reference in a 1940 Syracuse newspaper report of an ancestors death. It stated that he was survived by a sister who is named as Mrs Harold E Eggleston of Watertown. I do not think that this is a complete mistake and I do know she was not a sister in law. I have spent ages just trying to find Harold E in a census without luck. There are lots of references to a Harold Eggleston in Fultonhistory but cannot find a wifes christian name given. I am not aware that a sister of Edward Skeates of Syracuse was in the US although I have not found any reference to one sister, Elizabeth Sarah, born in 1865 in Canada. I know nothing of her since her birth. It could also be an Eliza born 1867 in Canda although she was still married and in Canada in 1911. Maybe its an unknown sister, who knows.
Any help appreciated
Brian

I am searching for my mother's family. Family History tells us that my great-grandfather Robbins was born on Ellis Island, sometime in the 1800's. He was married to Nellie, 1862-1959. They had several children, one my grandfather Walter Robbins, 1883-1946, my great aunts, Clara, Viola, Hattie. My great grandmother Nellie raised my mother and uncle, Eunice b. 1923 and Maurice b.1925 (approximate dates). Their mother Mary died approximately 1926 and I have no information whatsoever on her. Any information on any of this family would be greatly appreciated.

Hill, Farnham or Holts in Nelson or Rodman?

My Hill, Farnham and Holt lines have Rodman, NY, and/or Nelson, NH connections. Does anyone recognize those surnames? Daniel Farnham married Dorcas Holt (1796) and moved from Andover, MA, to Nelson, NH where Dorcas's parents had moved to. Then both families moved to New York, say 1808; the Farnhams were in Madison County in 1810. Daniel and Dorcas had a son, Daniel Jr., who married (1817) Keziah Hill, whose father, Jonathan Hill, apparently and whose brother Asa Hill (Charles also?) definitely lived in or near Rodman. Any info very welcome.

Jesse Wright, Nelson NH > Rodman NY ca. 1805

Jesse Wright moved from Nelson, Cheshire Co., NH, to Rodman, Jefferson Co. NY, in 1804 or 1805. He cleared land, farmed, and died on that homestead, which in 1890 was occupied by his grandson Nathan jr. Jesse's son Nathan sr married, first, Sophia Beals, of Nelson, N. H., and second, Almira Hunt, of Vermont. Nathan sr. and Sophia had four children, Lucy A., Nathan A., Elford F., and George B. Nathan sr. and Almira had a son, Charles E. The foregoing information is from Child's 1890 Gazetteer of Jefferson County, NY. From "A History of Nelson NH" ed. Parke Hardy Struthers, 1968, let me add that Jesse's wife was named Lydia, surname not given, and that Jesse was the son of either Oliver Wright (and wife Martha ___), or else Oliver's brother Nehemiah (and wife Mary Lund) of Dunstable NH. And that Sophia Beals was the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth "Betsey" (Foster) Beal [sic].
Lucy Jane Fox (or possibly Cole) was reportedly born at Sackett's
Harbor in 1804. By the late 1840's she is placed in Ontario married
to Hogue and then to Wedge. She died in Ontario in 1890.

Letters written by descendents indicate confusion as to whether her
maiden name was Fox or Cole. I suspect that whatever her name
was, the other could be the maiden name of her mother. She was a
devout methodist and apparently told relatives that she was related
to the "Fox Sisters", spiritualists of the mid to late 1800's.

Does anyone have any clues as to her parentage?

Frank & George H. Miller, Evans Mill/Clayton

Some time ago (about a year) I was contacted by someone (their email is in a stack somewhere in my office, but I can't find it) looking to connect their Frank Miller, born about 1868 in Evans Mill/Clayton, to my George H. Miller, born about 1861 in Evans Mill.

I've found both listed in the 1880 Federal Census for Clayton with an adopted sister, Sarah, a boarder, George Shadler, and parents, Bonue/Boney & Rosa. Boney & Rosa are buried in the Depauville cemetery and some of their infant children are buried in the Lutheran cemetery. George H's death certificate says his parents were George T. and Therese (Grunwald) Miller.

If this sounds familiar to anyone, please drop me a line.

Yours in genealogical research,

Liz
James Wheeler b. 1818 d. 1856 or 1865?

Hi,
I need help in resolving the year of death for my ggggrandfather, James Wheeler. He reportedly died in a sawmill accident. The year is in question. I have often seen it given as 1865, but the gravestone inscription listed on Northern New York Genealogy's site is 1856. I don't know if this is correct, or a typographical error on the site. He is buried in St. Lawrence Union Cemetery, Cape Vincent. The thing is, I tend to believe the 1856 date, since the 1860 US census shows his wife, Mary Ann (Cramer) Wheeler as head of household, and the mortality schedule of the 1865 NY census that is on line does not list him. However, the 1865 date is the one I see everywhere. Does anyone have a photo of the gravestone, an obituary, or other evidence to confirm that the date is indeed 1856?

Thanks,

Nessa
Looking for information about Chester Russell, son of Alanson Russell (1793-1838) and Nancy Caulkins (1794-1865), and a brother of Emmeline Russell (1814-1877), George Russell (1817-1888), and Clarinda Russell (b 1820), all born in Jefferson Co, New York.

Specifically, I am searching for information on Chester's first wife, a Nancy P ? , who was born in Connecticut in 1818. I believe Chester and Nancy married abt 1835 in Tuscarawas Co, Ohio, then moved abt 1850 to Bureau Co, Illinois, where Nancy divorced(?) him. Their daughter Mary Jane Russell (1837-1910) married William Butt Ross (1832-1919).

Chester seems to have married again before 1860 -- to a seamstress/dressmaker from England named Martha or Emma -- and had two more daughters before he died in Princeton, Illinois, before 1880. Daughters are Alice or Clarinda Russell (b 1859) and Lydia Russell (b 1865).

Any additional information will be most welcome.
