Did you ever get a death certificate or obituary for Moses?
The Ellen Van ALSTINE in the 1850 census in LaGrange was Elizabeth Cothrell's sister. William and Ellen (Cothrell) Van ALSTINE, were listed as parents of Frank S. Van ALSTINE (deacon) at West Creighton Ave. Christian Church of Fort Wayne, IN Extract of Membership Records 1896-1997
Elizabeth's obit declared that she was born in Mount Morris, NY. The only Cothrell in Mount Morris in 1820 and 1840 was Nathaniel, with a birth date range from 1790 to 1794. He seems to be in Genesee County in 1830 (summer vacation???), but the ages and gender of the children fit for Moses, Ellen and Elizabeth for 1830.
In 1840 census, there is a Jared Cothrell in Providence, Lucas County, OH, with 20 people in the household. Sounds like an extended family probably just arrived as immigrants. According to the Carpenters of Rehoboth, Betsey Cotteril of Providencia, Lucas County married Lyman Carpenter in 1840/41. Then their first son was born in Gilead, OH, just across the Maumee River from Providence. This puts Elizabeth as a migrant. Then, of course, Elizabeth and Moses live next door to each other in 1850. So Moses came too.
There's a Nathaniel Cottrell age 57 in Washington Co. NY in 1850 Census, age 67 in 1860, same place (no wife). None in 1870, but being missed isn't out of the question. (I got it from Cottrellweb.com, and it's possible that not all of them are listed).
So as far as a death for Nathaniel:

Interments in Rensselaer Co., NY Cemeteries,
Cottrell, Nathaniel 15 Mar 1793 25/26 Jun 1873 80y
wife Priscilla Booth, Emma Booth
Mother: Huldah Southwick Father: Samuel Jr. Cottrell County: Hoosick Cemetery: Island Hill

NATHANIEL Cottrell, b. August 1, 1793; m. ELIZABETH SANFORD.
Father: SMITH Cottrell (1763-1843) Mother: SUSAN STANTON
But these were the Rhode Islanders - another branch. So I'm thinking it's the first one.
Anyway, I believe I'm on to something for the parents of Moses, Elizabeth and Ellen. Levi, Jared and Newell were part of the clan I'm not sure how. They were too old to be the children of Nathaniel. Possibly a brother?
