John and Rebecca (Gregory) RALL/RULL, etc. near Lima, NY

I would appreciate suggestions on how to find information about this couple. Their daughter, Catherine RALL/RULL was born 1800 in Delaware County, NY, and soon afterward the family came to near Lima, NY

Catherine was married in 1825 to Thomas Sanford of Honeoye Falls, MonroeCo. NY.
I would like to know about this family between 1800-1825. I believe there was a farm accident to John RALL soon after they arrived, but not sure. Thank you for any ideas you can send.
There's a large article entitled "Mrs. Jane Williams of Avon, Observes 102d Birthday with Children and Grandchildren" in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, dated Saturday, April 23, 1927. It states that Jane was "the third of eight children born to Conrad Hogmire and Lucy Miller Hogmire, who were married in Avon on February 20, 1826." (The year is fuzzy, so my transcription could be wrong.) "Her father died December 27, 1867, her mother dying twenty years previously on September 4, 1844." The article gives more family information as well, so I would need an email address to send the pdf file.

Also, the Livingston County Historian records show that Conrad Hogmire died 28 Dec 1867.

Hope this helps,
~ Lisa

Marriage lookup

I'm looking for the marriage record for Samuel Hogmire and his 2nd wife Elizabeth (who's maiden name is supposed to be Payne but I've no proof of that). They would have been living at Leicester or Avon (their first child Angeline was born at Leicester according to family records, 5/23/1839).

Samuel's 1st wife Elizabeth Raum died 5/4/1837 and is buried at South Avon Cemetery. There are 2 small markers at her plot that are of unidentified children (or so I've been told).

I'm willing to pay a fair amount for some sort of verification of this marriage and discovering who these 2 children were. I don't know what records are available for that time period and understand it will probably consume a chunk of time but I REALLY want to solve these mysteries. Samuel allegedly had 24 children - I've found 20 of them. If anyone is willing please contact me and we can set up a payment agreement prior to you having to search.

Thanks in advance to anyone who is willing to tackle this for me.

Chaugham/Barber

Read these books and remember our ancestors. They relate the story of Barkhamsted, Connecticut and our ancestors who lived there. We do have a little Narragansett blood in us also.

The book, Legends of The Barkhamsted Lighthouse and Satan’s Kingdom in New Hartford, by Lewis Sprauge Mills and published in 1961, by the Shoe String Press, Second Edition, describes some of our ancestors from Connecticut. This book is a long poem similar to Hiawatha. It romanticizes the story and descendants of James and Molly (Barber) Chaugham.

The book, A Village of Outcasts, by Kenneth L. Feder and published by Mayfield Publishing Company in 1994, explores the archaeology of the Barkhamsted Tribe. It also explores the genealogy of this family group.

The following records are sparse. This is due to the early dates but also because this was a “Village of Outcasts”. Their records were not maintained in the way the “White Population” maintained their records. Native American groups passed on an oral history and these were not often written down. Until the 1850 census even the names of individuals were not recorded, just heads of households. Many of these people are believed to be buried in an old cemetery located in the Peoples State Forest next to the site where the Barkhamsted Lighthouse stood.

James Chaugham, “a Narragansett Indian” married Molly Barber, “a white woman” about 1740. James Chaugham was from Block Island in Rhode Island and it is reported that his grandmother may have been of Spanish descent. Molly Barber’s given name was Mary Barber. James Chaugham would have been born about 1710-20. James Chaugham died in Riverton, Connecticut about 1800. Mary (Barber) Chaugham died on 06 Feb 1818 and was reportedly 104 years of age. Mary Barber would have been born about 1714. The record of her estate can be found in Barkhamsted records and is dated 10 Feb 1821 and it reads:

Inventory
An inventory of the Estate of Mary Chogum
late of Barkhamsted decd-appraised by the
subscribers on the 29th day of Jany 1821
1 iron kettle 1.25 1 small Do. .50
1 old chest of Drawers .50 14 acres of land @ 10$ 140~
Total 142.25
We certify the above to be a true apprisal of
all the Estate exhibited to us. Judah Roberts Apprisor
Jossa Ives on oath
Recd in Court Feby 10, 1821 accepted, ordered to be
recorded & kept on file Solomon Everet Judge
a true record attest William Stone Clerk

Mary (Barber) Chaugham owed the town of Barkhamsted $284.97 in back taxes and legal fees. Her land was sold to her son-in-law, William Wilson for $ 100.00 and the town cut their losses.

The story goes that Mary/Molly’s parents disapproved of this marriage and therefore the couple left the area. There is some indication that Mary Barber was “from Wethersfield”? James and Molly Chaugham settled in Barkhamsted, Connecticut and established the “Barkhamsted Lighthouse Tribe”. This group consisted of Native Americans, whites, mixed bloods and some African Americans. There is an indication of other Native Americans in this area. Some believe James’s father’s name was Samuel and his mother’s name may have been Priscilla. Mary’s father’s name is believed to have been Peter Barber. The Chaugham name is also seen spelled as Chogum, Chagum, Chogam, Chaughom and Choggum. James and Molly (Barber) Chaugham had at least eight children:

Sally Chaugham
Samuel Chaugham married Miss Green
Solomon Chaugham married Miss Hayes
Meribah or Mary Chaugham married Samuel Lawrence
Hannah Chaugham b. abt. 1754 married Reuben Barber
Mercy Chaugham b. abt. 1757 married Isaac Jacklyn
Mary or Polly Chaugham b. abt 1758
Elizabeth Chaugham b. abt 1760

Mary Chaugham married William Wilson Sr., “a white man”. Mary is also seen as Polly Chaugham. William Wilson served during the Revolutionary War. He worked as a Preacher and Laborer. William Wilson Sr. died in 1843 in Tyringham, Massachusetts. They lived in Barkhamsted. Mary/Polly (Chaugham) Wilson died before 1833 as she is referred to in a land contract as the “late Mary Wilson”. It is reported that this couple had 12 children. William and Mary (Chaugham) Wilson’s known children were:

Esther Wilson married David Haskill
Susannah Wilson married Daniel F. Clarke
Polly Wilson b. abt 1797
William Wilson Jr. b. abt. 1799

Note: Polly Wilson’s birth year can be calculated from records to have been as early as 1771 and as late as 1797?

William Wilson Sr. is buried in the Hemlock Cemetery in Colebrook town. He is recorded as a “Barkhamsted Man” in the Honor Roll of Litchfield County Revolutionary Soldiers who served during the Revolutionary War. This book was written by Josephine Ellis Richards and published by The D.A.R. in Litchfield, Connecticut in 1912. He is also recorded in the Register of Revolutionary Soldiers and Patriots buried in Litchfield County. This book was written by Joyce MacKenzie Cropsey and published by the D.A.R. by Phoenix Publishing in Canaan, New Hampshire. In this notation it indicates his father was Joseph Wilson.

Polly Wilson married Joseph Elwell, “a white man”. Polly (Wilson) Elwell according to census records was born about 1797. When she died on 01 Sep 1867 her age was reported as 96 years of age, which would make her birth about 1771? According to records Polly’s birth year can be dated to 1771, 1782, 1789 and 1797? Joseph Elwell was the son of Joshua and Abigail (Jones) Elwell and was born about 1774. Joshua and Abigail Elwell had at least two sons, Stephen and Joseph Elwell, of Barkhamsted. . It is reported that Joseph and Polly (Wilson) Elwell had 14 children. Joseph Elwell’s known children were:

Sybil Elwell b. abt 1805
Joseph Elwell Jr. b. abt 1815
John Elwell b. abt 1815
infant Elwell b. 01 May 1817 d. 01 May 1817
Isaac Elwell b. abt 1824

Notes: Sybil Elwell may have been from a prior marriage depending on Polly’s actual age? In some records John Elwell is described as a “Mohegan”.

Sybil Elwell married Montgomery Webster. Sybil is referenced as “Creole”, which was used, at that time, to indicate mixed blood and Montgomery is listed as “Mohegan”. Montgomery Webster was known as “Old Gum” Webster. Sybil and Montgomery Webster can be found in the 1850 Barkhamsted census records. Several of these people were “basket makers” in Barkhamsted. A grandson of Montgomery and Sybil (Elwell) Webster stated he was the grandson of a “Narragansett Chief”. Montgomery and Sybil (Elwell) Webster had a son:

Solomon Webster

William Wilson Jr. married a lady named Harriet. Her last name has not been discovered and it is unknown if she was also Native American. William and Harriet Wilson’s known children were:

Thankful M. Wilson b. abt. 1822
Esther Wilson b. 1827
Mary Wilson b. abt 1830/33
Abigail Wilson b. 1838
William Wilson b. 1840

Mary Wilson married Solomon Webster. Solomon Webster was the son of Montgomery and Sybil (Elwell) Webster. Solomon and Mary (Wilson) Webster had 14 children:
Laura Webster
Frankie Webster
Fred Webster b. 1852 d. 15 Nov 1942
Riley Webster
Prudence Webster
Emma Webster
Dora Webster
Susan Webster
Justina Webster
William Webster
James Webster
Daniel Webster
Mary Webster
Janet Webster

The marriage record of Fredrick Webster and Mary (Bliss) Price was located in the Allegan County Records. They married in “Sherman” and were also from Lee Township in Allegan County. They married 26 Mar 1878. According to obituary records Fred Webster married Mary Blett.

The Lawton Leader carried the obituary of Fred Webster on 19 Nov 1942: “Dies at Age 90 Fred Webster, resident of Lawton for 38 years, died Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Nora Jackson in Vicksburg, at the age of 90 years and 8 months. He had been ill for about a week. Mr. Webster’s death came less than a year after that of his wife, who passed away last February. For many years the two were Lawton’s oldest residents, but, despite their advance age, they were able to maintain the home on Walker street during the summer months, spending the winter with their daughter in Vicksburg. Mr. Webster was born in Riverton, Connecticut, in 1852. He was the grandson of a Narragansett Indian chief. In his youngest days he was a mason by trade. Mr. and Mrs. Webster were married in 1874 in Shermantown, in Allegan county, Michigan. A few years later they removed to Marcellus, where they lived until 1904, when they came to make their home in Lawton. Mr. Webster leaves six children, Mrs. Nora Jackson of Vicksburg, Byron of Otsego, Stanley of Alamo, and Bert, Frank and Fred of Flint; also 22 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held in the Lawton Methodist church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, the Rev, Mr. Marsh of Vicksburg officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery, Lawton.

The records indicate Fred was the son of Solomon and Mary (Wilson) Webster. Solomon Webster was the son of Montgomery and Sybil (Elwell) Webster of Barkhamsted, Connecticut. Indications are that Fred Webster left Riverton at the age of fourteen with his uncle, Isaac Elwell, and drove to Michigan with horses and wagon. Fred Webster died on 15 Nov 1942 and was born in Mar1852.

The Lawton Leader carried the obituary for Mary (Blett) Webster on 26 Feb 1942: “Aged Resident Dies Funeral Rites Held For Mrs. Fred Webster, 90 Mrs. Mary Webster, 90, until recently a resident of Lawton, died early Sunday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nora Jackson of Vicksburg. Infirmities of age caused her death. Mrs. Webster was born Dec. 19, 1851 in Pennsylvania, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Blett, and came with her parents to Michigan when 10 years old. They settled on a farm southwest of Vicksburg and later moved to Allegan county, where she met Fred Webster, who was a grandson of a Connecticut Indian chief. Mr. and Mrs. Webster were married March 14, 1874 at Shermantown in Allegan county, spending a few years there before moving to Marcellus, where they resided until 1904. Since that time they had lived in Lawton with the exception of the winters which they spent with the daughter in Vicksburg. Mrs. Webster is survived by her husband, who is also 90 years old; six children, Byron Price of Otsego, Frank, Fed and Bert Webster of Flint, Stanley Webster of Alamo and Mrs. Jackson; also 22 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday from the Methodist church in Lawton, in charge of her nephew, the Rev. Ernest Blett, of Grand Rapids. Burial was in the Lawton cemetery.” Mary Webster died on 22 Feb 1942.

Fred and Mary (Blett) Webster had children:

Nora Webster who married … Jackson
Byron Price Webster
Frank Webster
Fred Webster
Bert Webster
Stanley Webster
Lena Belle Webster b. 1882 married 2nd Oliver Perkins (not mentioned in either obituary)

The 1880 census of Marcellus Village, Cass County, Michigan includes:

Frederick Webster age 26 years born in Connecticut
Mary Webster age 30 years born in Pennsylvania
Minnie H. Price age 7 years born in Michigan stepdaughter
Almo C. Price age 5 years born in Michigan stepson
Byron G. Price age 3 years born in Michigan stepson
Charles Webster age 1 year born in Michigan

Apparently Mary Blett had been married before she married Fred Webster.

The 1910 census of Marcellus Township, Berrien County, Michigan includes:

Fred Webster b. Apr 1850 Connecticut
Mary Webster b. Dec1851 Pennsylvania
Fredie Webster b. Oct 1883 Michigan
Bertie Webster b. Sep 1886 Michigan
Nora Webster b. Nov 1890 Michigan
Stanley Webster b. Oct 1892 Michigan
Bell Horix b. Sep 1881 Michigan
Hazel Horix b. Mar 1900 Michigan

This census indicates Mary had 10 children, nine of whom were living in 1900. That would have been the three children by Mr. Price and the seven by Fred Webster.
HOWDEN S. COVEY

BIOGRAPHICAL REVIEW- LIVINGSTON AND WYOMING COUNTIES 1895, PAGES 319, 320
HOWDIN COVEY, a shrewd and careful business man, and one of Dalton's most respected citizens, engaged in agricultural pursuits upon arriving at the estate of manhood, and with marked energy, enterprise, and judicious management prosecuted his chosen calling, meeting with unbounded success, and adding greatly each changing season to his material wealth. He is a native of the Empire state, having been born in Monroe county, October 2, 1830.
Mr. Covey's father Eldaah Covey, was born in Columbia County, in the town of Coxsackie, while a resident of that place learned the trade of a carpenter and joiner, which he followed as a means of earning a livelihood. He was located for a time in Monroe County, but removed to Livingston County in 1840, settling in Mount Morris, where he followed his trade for upward of twoscore years. In 1884 he removed to Iowa, making his home with one of his sons, and there departed this life at the venerable age of fourscore and four years. He was united in marriage with Rachel Howdin, a daughter of John Howdin, of Seneca County, and to them six children were born, namely: Phoebe, who now lives in Wisconsin; Naomi; a resident of Allegany County; Enos, who is deceased; Tamer, also deceased; Ann, who resides in Milwaukee, Wis.; and Howdin, of whom we write. The mother died in the town of Nunda.
The early years of the subject of this personal narration were spent in the place of his birth, and his education was principally acquired in the schools of Parma. As soon as old enough to become self-supporting, Mr. Covey secured work as a farm laborer, and worked one year for Captain Bagley, of Nunda. Naturally industrious and cultivating the spirit of economy and thrift, he saved part of his hard-earned wages, and with this money purchased a farm in Allegany County, where he engaged in mixed husbandry until 1859. Having an opportunity to sell at an advantage, Mr. Covey then disposed of his property there, and returning to Mount Morris engaged in general farming and stock-raising until 1891, when he bought the house and lot where he now lives in Dalton. He may be properly ranked among the self-made men of the county, having begun his career at the foot of the ladder of life, but by energetic labor and prudent management has worked his way toward the summit of success. In whatever community he has resided Mr. Covey has made his influence felt, and has taken an active interest in local affairs, having served as Excise Commissioner nine years, and in 1891 was appointed Highway Commissioner. Socially, he is a member of the Masonic fraternity, belonging to Kisaqua Lodge at Nunda. In politics he is a sound Democrt, and cast his first presidential vote in 1856 for James Buchanan.
With the natural desire to establish a home and surround himself with domestic ties, Mr. Covey wedded Miss Laura Jones, a daughter of Samuel and Loretta Jones; and she has been to him a most devoted companion and counselor. Sorrow, however, has not passed them by untouched, but has laid its chastening hand heavily upon them in the death of their three beautiful children, leaving their home desolate and childless; but their hearts are cheered and uplifted by the abiding faith that assures them a joyful reunion in the eternal world beyond.
Mr. Covey was well known in this town, as he lived at Brooksgrove for a good many years, until he moved to Dalton a few years ago. The deceased was a staunch Democrat, a good citizen, true friend and neighbor, and his many friends in this place will extend sympathy to the bereaved wife.

NUNDA NEWS, FEBRUARY 3, 1900, SATURDAY, PAGE 2
Mr. H. Covey died at his home on Sunday, at about 2 p.m. after a long illness, aged about 76 years. The funeral services were largely attended from the house on Wednesday, at 1 p.m., conducted by Rev. W. F. Wells, whose remarks were highly spoken of by those present. The masonic fraternity, of which he was a member, had charge of the burial. He leaves to mourn his loss a widow, who has been in poor health for many years. Much sympathy is extended her in her loneliness. Mr. Covey had many friends, as he was a man of business, having a considerable amount of property to look after. He had one niece, Mrs. Richardson, who with her husband from Belmont, were present at the funeral, she having spent some time here during his illness. The interment was on the family lot of the Jones' below Nunda, as Mrs. Covey was a daughter of the late Samuel Jones. Pretty flowers covered the casket.

High on the wall of the Livingston County Historical Museum in Geneseo there is a huge map (maybe 8' square)showing the property owners as of 1858. Very few of the names are readable because it is too high and the names too small. I would like to get a copy of the town of York. Can anyone suggest how I can do this? They weren't able to suggest a method at the museum

My initial search found 6 James Barber's in the Cayuga, NY 1850 and 1860 census with 5 born in NY and 1 in Ireland. Are you able to provide James' year of birth and/or any additional information regarding Rachel and/or their children? You may want to contact the Cayuga County Historian (http://www.co.cayuga.ny.us/history/index.html) as the Barber surname is listed in their family files index.

Hope this helps,
~ Lisa

Mount Morris Cemeteries / Churches? Plat Maps / Atlas's?

Hello List,
Does any one know the name of the church that stood on Chapel between Clinton and Stanley Streets in the village of Mount Morris (Allens Hill)? (Was it St Patrick's in 1818?) I understand it had a Cemetery as well. And Chapel Rd runs over part of it. Apparently they moved most of the bodies in abt 1818 to what is now called Old Cemetery (known as Old Town Cemetery circa 1846) Chapel St. (Hwy #408) near Fairmont in the town of Mt. Morris. which pre-dated the Mt. Morris Cemetery. It is about 1/2 mile east of the larger Mt. Morris Cemetery.
Do transcription's exist for the "Church Cemetery" or the "Old Cemetery".

May 20, 1890 Rochester NY Democrat Chronicle
"H. E., BROWN superintendent of the Mount Morris Cemetery Association has ordered his foreman P.J. KINGSTON to put in good order tho Old Cemetery which is right in the village and where no interments had been made in some years. In 1846 it was referred to as the "Old Town Cemetery" and had a pottery next door to it.

Bones Discovery Detours Road Job
http://www.lauriemercerpr.com/articles/bones.html

I also am looking to find the memorial of John BARNES d. 1845 buried in the (new) Mt. Morris Cemetery on Chapel Street and Sand Hill. Also his wife Elizabeth POTTER BARNES d. 1844 and his daughter Sydney McCREERY d. after 1880.
If any one can tell me where they are located in the cemetery it is appreciated.

Has anyone discovered any Old Plat maps of the Town and or village of Mount Morris. I am sure existed in at least 1858, however I have not been able to find it, are there older ones? Looking for location of th Barnes Farm latter known as the David WING farm.
I had a hard time posting this message to the Yahoo groups message board? It actually would not post. Wonder why?

Thank You
Best regards
Kurt
