Wakeman Wheeler, 1827 - after 1910; Jerome Wheeler, 1829 - 1910

I am a descendant of Sylvester Wheeler, b 1801, Lebanon, Madison County, New York. He was the son of Daniel Wheeler, b 1771, Canaan, Columbia County, NY and Amanda Pease, b 1777, Connecticut. Sylvester Wheeler had three (3) sons, Wakeman S. Wheeler, b 1827, Otselic, Chenango County, NY; Jerome Wheeler, b 1829, Otselic, Chenango County, NY; and Hiram S. Wheeler, b 1835, Lincklaen, Chenango County, NY.

I am searching for information or descendants of the son, Jerome Wheeler, b 1829. He lived his earlier life in the Eaton, Madison County, NY area and at some point as a young man removed to the Cortland, Cortland County, NY area. I have seen several newspaper articles where he was visiting the Eaton area on trips and vacation, possibly to see other family members. His brother, Wakeman S. Wheeler, b 1827 was living in Eaton, Madison County, NY and it is my understanding that he (Wakeman) died there and is buried there, but I have no proof or dates. Also, Wakeman was married to Charlotte Irene Bonney, born 1831, Morrisville, Madison County, NY.

Jerome Wheeler died in Cortland in 1910, but was taken to Eaton for funeral services (Baptist Church) and burial, according to a Utica Newspaper (exact date not readable). Also, Mrs. Jerome Wheeler (Jane?) died in Cortland of typhoid fever in 1888 +/- a year or two (again, the date on the newspaper is not legible) and was removed to Eaton for funeral and burial. That obituary indicates the funeral was at her brother-in-laws house, F. B. Morse.

I would be interested in hearing from descendants of the son Wakeman S. Wheeler or the son Jerome Wheeler. I descend from the other son, Hiram S. Wheeler.

If anyone has information, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thank you.
Daniel Wheeler and Amanda Pease Wheeler Lapham, 1800’s, Madison County

Daniel Wheeler died in an accident at his grist mill in Earlville, Madison County, NY at age 35 in 1806 (Book below, page 554 & 555). His wife, Amanda, widowed and the mother of five young children courageously bore her trials and managed her affairs with enterprising assiduity. Seven years later, Amanda married 2nd Deacon Duty Lapham, whose daughter, Deborah B. Lapham, was the wife of Jonathan Wade, the first student of what is now Colgate University and a venerable senior missionary in Burma. Amanda Wheeler Lapham died at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. L. Joslyn, in Eaton, Madison County, NY 22 April, 1869, at the advanced age of 92 (Book below, page 423, see asterisk at bottom of page). Mrs. Wheeler was one of the seven who composed the First Baptist Church of Hamilton when it was first organized, and when Elder Olmstead was pastor, and from that day to the close of her long, eventful life, she was an earnest, consistent Christian. This data is from the book "History of Madison County, State of New York by L. M. Hammond, Syracuse NY, 1872". Amanda Wheeler’s two daughters married graduates of Colgate University; Amanda Wheeler (the daughter) married Rev. Holland Turner, class of 1824 and Fanny Wheeler married Rev. Peter Latimer, class of 1826. The data comes from the book “The first half century of Madison University (1819-1869)” which is now Colgate University.

Daniel was a Veteran, Captain, New Your Militia, Columbia County & Chenango County, reference - Council of Appointment Military Records, NY, Columbia County & Chenango County, 1786-1821, Pages 375, 439 & 748 (circa 1797). Also, inscription on gravestone, Captain Daniel Wheeler is buried at Randallsville Cemetery, Lebanon, Madison County, NY. The cemetery is called Smith's Valley Cemetery today and was the subject of an article tiled "Road's Path a Grave Matter" by Bob Peel which appeared in the Empire Magazine, an insert in the Syracuse Herald American, May 11, 1980.

CAPTAIN DANIEL WHEELER was born 1771 in Canaan, Columbia County, NY, and died 25 Dec 1806 in Lebanon, Madison County, New York. He married AMANDA PEASE 1794 (or 1795?) in Canaan, Columbia County, NY. She was born 1777 in Connecticut, and died 22 Apr 1869 in Eaton, Madison County, New York.

Children of DANIEL WHEELER and AMANDA PEASE are:

ERASTUS DANIEL WHEELER, was born 28 Nov 1795, Canaan, Columbia County, NY; d. 08 Aug 1863, Hamilton, Madison County, New York; m. ELIZABETH UPHAM, 1832, Hamilton, Madison County, New York; b. 1808, Hamilton, Madison County, New York; d. 13 Aug 1868, Hamilton, Madison County, New York.

EDWARD WHEELER, was born 25 Jul 1798, Lebanon, Madison County, New York; d. 1868, Broullitts Creek, Edgar County, IL; m. NARISSA JONES, 25 Apr 1820, Clark County, IL; b. 25 Jun 1801, East Lebanon, York County, Maine; d. 26 Jan 1882, Broullitts Creek, Edgar County, IL.

SYLVESTER8 WHEELER was born 03 Mar 1801 in Lebanon, Madison County, New York, and died 14 Jan 1881 in Otselic, Chenango County, NY. He married ANNA PIERCE Abt. 1826 in Otselic, Chenango County, NY. She was born 1798 in Connecticut, and died 17 Oct 1887 in Otselic, Chenango County, NY.

AMANDA WHEELER, was born 07 Jul 1803, Lebanon, Madison County, New York; d. She married PETER LATIMER (Colgate University Class of 1826) 01 Jun 1826 in Homer, Madison County, NY, son of PICKET LATIMER and EUNICE. He was born 30 Mar 1800 in Waterford, New London County, Connecticut, and died 07 Feb 1878 in Norwalk, Huron County, Ohio.

Question – Daniel Wheeler is my 4th great grandfather. If there are other descendants of Daniel & Amanda Wheeler out there, please contact me so we can compare notes. Richard Wheeler

Article - ROAD’S PATH A GRAVE MATTER, by Bob Peel (Daniel Wheeler, born 1771)

ROAD’S PATH A GRAVE MATTER, by Bob Peel (Daniel Wheeler, born 1771)

From - Sunday Syracuse Herald American Newspaper, center section (Empire Magazine), May 11, 1980, page 17.

Two centuries ago down in Smith’s Valley on the banks of the Chenango River (Lebanon, Madison County, NY) they started a do-it-yourself cemetery to save a milling community. It worked perfectly and today local residents are doing their best to make certain this particular piece of their history never again slides back into weed-choked obscurity.

Smith’s Valley is more than halfway down the Chenango from Eaton to Randalleville. The cemetery sits safely off the east bank of the river; it was one of the first areas to turn green this spring as the Valley woke up from winter. Several hundred tombstones are lined up under the spruce and cedar trees. They mark the final resting places on this earth for families tracing their way back to the pioneers. Their names make a Who’s Who for Smiths Valley. But it may be the most important one of all simply has no name. He may have been a pauper, criminal or simply an unknown person. Here is how it happened.

When the first families moved in from Vermont and New York’s lower Hudson Valley, roads were little more than paths and they stayed that way. In 1797, the state Legislature authorized a lottery to raise $45,000 for rural road improvement. Smith’s Valley needed help badly. The center of activities was a pair of mills. Dan Wheeler ran the gristmill on the west bank while his brother, Elisha, had a sawmill across from him and slightly down stream. All the neighbors needed the Wheeler brothers and they respected their honesty and skill. But, when news that a new road was authorized, it appeared the mills might he isolated or even lost completely.

Back on the hills west of the two mills, the growing village of Lebanon had some citizens with a little extra clout. They began to pull a few political strings to get that road money to pay for a route cut directly east from Lebanon to Fayne’s Settlement, now better known as Hamilton. And that would have left the two Wheeler mills high, dry and probably eventually out of work. Something had to be done. The valley people felt they had reason on their side but it evidently didn’t help. More drastic action was needed.

David Shapley Jr., one of the early settlers, and Dan Wheeler, the gristmill owner, took action. Very quietly, probably well after dark, they went up toward Eaton and exhumed a cadaver from the potter’s field there. The site was close to the present location of the Gerritt Smith Infirmary. Then, still in the darkness, they reburied the unknown in a field smack dab in the middle of the new road route favored by the hill people from Lebanon. More burials soon followed and an official cemetery association was formed. Stone slabs marked the graves.

The mid-night shovel work succeeded. The hill people abandoned their proposal to run the new road straight down the hill. The alternative was accepted and the route circled around the valley to take in both of the Wheeler mills before it continued eastward.

Today the road to Hamilton follows essentially the same direction. You come down School House Hill., cross the River Road and go along Armstrong Road until you turn northeast for Hamilton. It is the long way around.

That cemetery proved to be no dig-by-night venture. Both the Shapleys and the Wheelers made certain its existence was justified. Eight (8) Wheeler and ten (10) Shapley graves were dug there before 1850. One of the earliest is that of Dan Wheeler, one of the co-conspirators. He died on Christmas Day, 1806, when an accident took his life in his own mill at the age of only 35 years. The miller still was very well regarded by his family and friends. The faded and weatherworn stone reads: “He lived a good moral life and left some evidence at his death of a glorious resurrection.” If you are in the area before the grass grows too high you will easily see the outlines or foundations of the two Wheeler mills. Take Armstrong Road across the Chenango River. The little cemetery stands out like a jewel after you pass the remnants of the two mills. About three years ago (that would have been 1977) a restoration and maintenance committee was formed to rescue it from oblivion. The stones had fallen and many were broken. Myrtle, ever present in country burial grounds, covered most of the markers. Weeds of every description stood between the stones and what was left of a fence was in worse shape than the tombstones. Some of the graves and most of the walkways had sunken below ground level; they collected rain water in the summer.

(The actually article go on, but I have end my word-for-word transcription at this point).

The restoration and maintenance project was very successful and today, in the year 2007, Smith’s Valley Cemetery is in excellent condition.

This information is excerpts from the original article written by Bob Peel. It was published in the Sunday Syracuse Herald American Newspaper, center section (Empire Magazine), May 11, 1980, page 17.

Origin of Randalleville Cemetery, now Smith’s Valley Cemetery, on Armstrong Road approximately ½ mile east of the Chenango River.

Daniel Wheeler, born 1771, Canaan, Columbia County, NY; died December 25, 1806 (Christmas Day) Lebanon, Madison County, NY. Daniel Wheeler is the 4th great grandfather of Karen Wheeler Sherbeck, Richard, Donald & Douglas Wheeler, all natives Syracuse, NY - community of Eastwood (Richard is now retired and living in Florida and Donald died on 06 Jul 2004).

Clark/Walker family

I am researching the family of Samuel Clark, probably born sometime around 1870. I have not been able to positively identify him in any census which makes it very difficult. Here is what I have found on the family.

James Clark, was born in Jewell, Oneida Lake Janueary 23, 1897 (I am not quiet sure where this is) son of the lat Samuel and Mary Walker Clark. This was written when he died in 1944. He had lived in Oneida for 35 years. He was a salesman for Oneida Limited then for the Scheifele Candy Company before running restaurants. In October 1929 he and his wife, Alice Smith, bought the Earl McGuinness Candy and Tobacco store in downtown Oneida. 5 years later they bought "The Gables" Restaurant and moved it to their residence, 422 Elizabeth Street (is there still a restaurant called the Gables?) He is survived by his wife and three children: Alice Smith Clark(wife), Nancy (daughter), David J. (son), Charles S. (son). Also, 2 brothers: Isaac of Yorkville and John of Syracuse.

Charles and David were both in the Air Force when their mother passed away about 10 years later. Isaac died in 1972 and his wife, Ruth Kling Clark died in 1962.

If anyone thinks that they may have a connection, or any information on this family I would be really happy to get it. Thanks in advance!

Francesca

My ancestor Samuel Buck and his brother John Buck were living in Nelson in 1820 census. Samuel moved to Herkimer Co later. But I believe that John stayed in Madison Co., I am looking for more info on John. I found out that a John Buck was murdered in Madison Co in 1800's and I am needing to know if this is the same John or maybe a relative to him. A William Zecker was tried and aquitted for the murder. Does anyone have more on this family????

What was a "dealer in drugs" in 1847?

I found "George Morse, dealer in drugs, began business in 1847 with John F. Irons and purchased his partner's interest two years later; the firm is now George Morse & Son" online.

I'm not familiar with the 1847 definition of that occupation.

John F. Irons was my great-great grandfather, who came to
Cazenovia in 1835 as a house painter. Later he became a
"dealer in drugs", and I am curious...was that the 1847 equivalent of a pharmacist? I'm curious because our older
son is now a pharmacist.

Thanks.

Marty Irons
Goshen NY
k2mi@frontiernet.net

Daniel & Amanda Wheeler, Erastus D Wheeler, Elisha Wheeler, Ichabod K. Wheeler, Amanda Lapham, Jonathan Wade

I am a descendant of Daniel & Amanda Wheeler who settled in Lebanon, Madison County, NY in about 1797. Daniel, born 1771 in Canaan, Columbia County, NY and Amanda relocated there from New Lebanon, Columbia County, NY about 1797. They where married in New Lebanon, Columbia County, NY and had their first son Erastus D. Wheeler, born 28 Nov 1796 there. Erastus D Wheeler died 08 Aug 1863 in Hamilton, Madison County, NY. Daniel Wheeler died at the early age of 35 in his grist mill on 25 Dec 1806 in Lebanon, Madison County, NY. Some years later Amanda remarried Deacon Lapham who assumed guardianship of Amanda’s children according to Madison County Court records of 1813. The children’s names are Erastus (b 1796), Edward (b 1799), Sylvester (b 1891), Amanda (b 1804) & Fanny (b 1806). I am searching for church records on birth or baptism dates of the children and married names of the two girls so I can follow their genealogy, as well. Sylvester was believed to have been named Ichabod Elisha Wheeler at birth in 1801. However, guardian records show his name as Sylvester in the 1813 court paper. One of the daughter married Jonathan Wade, I believe. Daniel had two brothers in the area as well, Elisha and Ichabod K. I would be grateful for any information that you may have. Thank you.

My Eddy and Wheeler ancestors lived in the area of Brookfield and Lebanon in the early 1800s. Levi Eddy was buried at some church in Lebanon in 1827 or 1837. Thank you!

I am looking for a birth record for Henry for May 25, 1888 in Oneida New York. Henry was my father. There is a Directory record for his father living on Sherman Streetin Oneida in1889. Henry's mother was Dorothea and his father was also Henry. We know he was born In the Albany/Oneida/Utica area. Researches done by my mother in the forties in Albany turned up no records. Utica also turned up no record. The only place we haven't searched is Oneida. Can anyone advise me where best to write to ask for a record. Though Dad is now long dead, I would also like to know what his full name was. He always said it Was Henry Kapke (they aglicized it, but they were only three years in the US and the Oneida directory used the German spelling, and maybe his birth record was under Köpke and not Kapke.

Any help?

Dorothea

Luther family info

I am searching for info on Mary (b. 1839)or Esther Luther(b. 1834) who may have married in the mid-1800's around the Madison County New York area. They are daughters of my great aunt (Roxeyanna Carpenter Luther) who along with my great grandfather (Alfred Madison Luther) make up a brick wall in my research!

I have just discovered that the children (or grandchildren) of these two women are listed in a will for Orsemus Luther (their younger brother, b. 1841 in Lebanon, NY) in 1907.

The names listed are:
Elmer Phillips, Crowell, Nova Scotia, Canada
Franklin Phillips, Georgetown, NY
Maud N. Williams, Cazenovia, NY
Roslynn Barrows
Willie Barrows
Mary Barrows, Earlville, NY
Julia Wilcox, Little Falls Ny
Grace L. Hammond, Cazenovia, NY
Cory L. Warner, South Edmeston, NY

If any of these names are familiar, please contact me. I am hoping someone will have record of Roxeyanna's and Alfred Carpenter's parents.

B.
Cora L. (Hess) Faulkner (Oneida New York) ca. 1898

The following article is from "Stone, an Illustrated Magazine," February 1898, Vol. XVI, No. 3, pp. 249-250.

A Practical Quarrywoman.

“Among our list of quarry owners and operators will be found probably several score names of women who either manage the office work of a quarry business or are directors of quarrying companies. There are a few who are the active, practical managers and superintendents in quarrying operations. Strangely, the class of quarrywomen, who figuratively speaking, put boots on, descend into the pit and boss the job of producing stone, so far as we have heard them, have taken up the task that an afflicted husband was forced to relinquish, thus demonstrating themselves worthy helpmates and wise counselors.

“It is our pleasure to introduce to the fraternity of quarry owners a woman who has achieved much more than an ordinary measure of success in the field of quarrying and contracting, and who has displayed remarkable ability in the conduct of large business enterprises - remarkable, because of the nature of the business itself, which is commonly admitted as not of the class best fitted for women to engage in.

“Mrs. J. M. Faulkner personally manages the Oneida stone quarries, located a few miles from Oneida, N.Y. Mrs. Faulkner’s maiden name was Cora L. Hess, and she was graduated from Whitestown Seminary, Whitestown, N.Y. Her father, Hon. Archibald Hess, was well known in western New York, both as a politician and business man. He was one of the largest land owners of that section, and forty-five years ago furnished stone for the Erie canal work from a quarry on his farm. It is this quarry which his daughter now manages. When extensive improvements on the Erie canal were recently decided, on Mr. Faulkner, who was a contractor, prepared to put in a bid for the stone required. When the contracts were let he was sick with typhoid fever. His wife,* the subject of our sketch, had kept track of the matter and succeeded in getting the contract for furnishing stone for nine miles of the improvement. With four quarrymen she started the work of stripping or removing the dirt in order to get at the stone required. In two weeks she had forty men in the pit and fourteen teams, and at the end of the third week the list swelled to seventy men and twenty-five teams. During all this time Mrs. Faulkner personally supervised her force of men, working from 7 in the morning until 6 at night. At present time the quarry is open for a distance of 300 feet long and 85 feet wide, with a face of 15 feet.

(* I believe this “wife” should have been “daughter.”)

“Mrs. Faulkner is a most remarkable business woman, and when questioned as to the work she said she was just in her element when the weather was fine and the work was being pushed to the utmost. When asked if the work tired her she smiled and said: ‘No, I am never tired, and do not know what it is to have an ache or a pain, and if more women would occupy themselves with real serious work there would be less grumbling and less unhappiness in the world.’

“Added to the responsibility of working the quarry is the care of two large boarding houses, where the quarrymen are accommodated. Many of the teamsters keep their horses on the farm, which also requires added attention. Mrs. Faulkner has had entire charge of the men, and depends upon herself alone. She has superintended the entire work of hiring and discharging the men according to her judgment, and has throughout exhibited rare ability and excellent foresight. A few weeks since she made application for a charter to construct a railway from the quarries to the canal, nearly two miles distant. She has also recently contracted with a prominent asphalt paving company, which has a contract for a section of the canal improvement, to furnish 30,000 cubic yards of stone.”

* * * * * * *

The following article is from The New York Times published on April 16, 1886, pp. 1. (While the name of Cora L. Faulkner, daughter of ex-Assemblyman Hess, of Oneida matches the name of the subject in the above article, there is a discrepancy in the name of her husband. The above article states Cora’s husband’s name was “J.M. Faulkner.”)

“Mrs. Faulkner Gets A Divorce.

Syracuse, N.Y., April 15. - Mrs. Cora L. Faulkner, daughter of ex-Assemblyman Hess, of Oneida, was to-day granted a divorce from her husband, Samuel Faulkner, by Justice Kennedy, of this city. The suit has been pending for two years, and the proceedings have been watched with great interest all over Central New-York. With the divorce is granted the custody of the two children, one of whom Mr. Faulkner once attempted to carry away by force.”

Peggy B. Perazzo
Stone Quarries and Beyond
http://www.cagenweb.com/quarries/

I am looking for Eunice Streeter information.

She was d/o Joseph Kenny Streeter and Mary Ann Unknown. She was born abt 1850 in Grass Lake, Jackson County, MI. Both parents died in mid-1850's and are buried in Kent County, MI. along with Joseph Streeter's grandfather Rev. Chester Palmer. Eunice is a grand-daughter of Rev. Randolph Streeter and Eunice Palmer. They are both buried in Tully, NY

Eunice Streeter is found in 1860 census living with Ranson and Samantha Cook in Fenner Township. (Ranson is probably the son of David and Lucinda Cook). The exact relationship is unknown however Eunice's Uncle Chester P Streeter (also died in mid 1850's) is buried in Fenner. His wife was Philanda Cook Streeter (died in 1870's) and buried in Fenner. Perryville cemetery. Philanda may be related to Ranson.

Peleg and Ichabod Palmer are buried in Cranson cemetery. Both are related to Rev. Chester Palmer.

After the 1860 census I can no longer trace her. She probably married (not buried in the cemeteries I checked) but unable to find a marriage index for area to see.

Any information on Eunice is appreciated.

Thanks,
Larry Isberg
isberg48@yahoo.com

I have been researching my O'Neil side of my family. What I have to date is Rosanna O'Neil married George H. Bittinger (or Bettinger) and had a son Harry H. It appears that George dies between 1880 - 1900. Harry too looks to pass away after getting married to a Jane. I am looking for anyone who can give me more information on this family or any clues to finding out more on Rose A. Bittenger from Madison County, Sullivan Township in Chittenango.

Thanks, Sean

I believe my Kennelly family may have lived in Madison Co. NY before moving on to Rochester. One of their children was supposedly b. in Union in 1864 and another in Erie or maybe Erieville in 1868. I can not find them in the 1870 census. Where can I find the NY 1865 census or is there someone who could do a search for me? The family consists of John Kennelly b. 1835, wife Johanna b. 1837, son Michael b. 1857 and daughter Mary b. 1859/60, all b. Ireland. Then came daughter Ellen b. ca 1864, Bridget Frances b. ca 1868, and Catherine b. ca 1870. I am also looking for naturalization papers for John Kennelly. In NY, are they available at the county seat where the event took place? What other records in Madison Co. may be available for this time period? Thanks in advance for all help.

OLD MADISON CO. CABINET CARD PHOTO FOUND

I have purchased/rescued an old cabinet card photo of a young woman named Anna Hill. Anna is identified on the back of the card along with “Caz. Sem. Class ‘90.” I assume this means Cazenovia School, or Seminary of some sort. So, Anna was graduated from school in 1890. I believe she is in her graduation dress. It is a white dress with short sleeves. She also is wearing elbow length gloves (with fingers showing) and holding what appears to be a purse. She appears to be about 17-22 years of age. The photo was taken by Marshall Bros Photography, Ten Eyck Block, Cazenovia, NY, which is imprinted on the front of the card. I try to rescue old cabinet card photos and find their family, or another safe haven. If Anna Hill is yours, or you may be interested in this photo, please contact me at: jmje36@aol.com. I am not on the mail list for Hill or Madison Co. NY. Thank you, Judy in TX

I know he later married Isabella McIntosh, although I never did find a death date for him. If anyone has any info on this family at all, I would greatly appreciate it.
