It's possible your James is the son of Lanson and Lucinda. I haven't done much research on him. He was married to a woman named Dela according to the 1870 Census. I cannot find them in later censuses, however I have found marriage records for James A Collins marrying Ervilla Vickery in 1876 in Mundy, MI. This is the area my Collins' all lived, leading me to believe he is the same man. They had two children, Daisy 1878-1891 and your George born in 1880.
I haven't added this line to my tree as I haven't found a death record for Dela and I'm usually hesitant to add information I can't verify, but I'm very sure we have a connection. Feel free to copy any information from my tree.
I do need to point out that all of Lanson and Lucinda's children where born in Rochester, New York area. The family came to Michigan in the late 1860's. It seems there was a large migration from that part of New York to Genessee County, Michigan. A local historian considers the Collins family as one of the founding families of the area.
