US Census reports note that Thomas was born in Scotland circa 1819. Thomas had a brother whom US Census reports note was born in "Canada Eng" circa 1826. My theory is that Thomas' parents emigrated to Canada circa 1820/21. A note I wrote in the 60s while visiting with my grandmother says that he left Scotland at age 2. The earliest evidence I have for either Thomas or Robert is the 1850 US Census which shows Robert living in Bergen, NY, and I have a marriage for Thomas in 1854 to a woman living in Gates, NY. Thus, I believe Thomas and his brother may have left Canada sometime in the 1840s when Thomas would have been age 20-30...Thomas possibly to attend school (in Ogden? per the 1880s newspaper report about him and a classmate who attended school in Ogden) and Robert to apprentice as a Blacksmith with a family in Bergen. Thanks for inquiring...
