Congressional Districts - Civil War Draft - NYC

For those of you interested in finding your ancestors in the NYC Civil War Draft, I have the following information taken from the Nancy Morehouse book, Civil War Draft:

New York City Congressional District
Wards 1-6, 8 4
Wards 11, 17 7
Wards 12, 19, 22 9
Wards 18, 20, 21 8
Wards 7, 10, 13, 14 5
Wards 9, 15, 16 6
Randall's Island 9
Blackwell's Ward 9

With apologies to BobNY for "poaching" his link, more information can be found at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mruddy/substitu.htm.

If you want to see if your ancestor really was drafted, and you have access to the NY Times online, historical edition, you may be interested to know that the paper published the names of the draftees after each drawing. Put "draft" and "District _" (without the quotes; spell out the number) in the search box and set the date parameters to August 1863. It may take a bit of "tweaking", I found I had to add my ancestors's street name to get to the right list. His name wasn't on it but I did recognize 2 neighbors names.

Happy Hunting!

Lynn
