Benjamin Jackson BUCHANAN, born 1904

I am looking for news of Benjamin Jackson BUCHANAN.

Benjamin Jackson Buchanan was born in ~1904 in Boonville, Oneida County, New York. His mother Clara Jackson Buchanan died in 1906. His father William K Buchanan re-married twice after this and died in Chicago in 1917. Benjamin was listed as age 13 when his father died in 1917.

In 1910 Benjamin Jackson BUCHANAN (age 5) was living with his grandmother Nancy JACKSON (age 69) in Boonville. By 1920 his father had died and Benjamin J Buchanan (age 15) was living with his grandmother Nancy Jackson (age 78) in Boonville. Nancy Jackson died November 1, 1921 at age 80.

Benjamin was an only child. His father was an only child and died in 1917. Both his Buchanan grandparents died in 1918. He is not listed as buried with his father and his Buchanan grandparents in Camden, New York. With his widowed Jackson grandmother dead in 1921, I have no idea where this young man might have gone. Benjamin Jackson Buchanan is not identifiable in the 1930 US Census, nor is he identifiable in the US Social Security Death Index. I think he must have died between 1920 and 1930. If he did die, I presume there was no one left to add his name to any family monument. He is not listed in the New York death indexes. Does anybody know of Benjamin Jackson Buchanan?

Looking for any information on John Wesley Oster, born 1871 in New York. According to the 1880 US Census he was living in Lee Township, Oneida County, New York, but doesn't seem to show up anywhere else. His parents are - Father: William Henry Oster b. May 22, 1843 in New York d. Dec. 8, 1921 in Wheeler Township, Michigan and Mother: Hattie (Lasher) Oster b. 1848 in New York d. Jan. 29, 1927 in Traverse City, Michigan. Both are buried in Ridgelawn Cemetery in Breckenridge, MI. John Wesley Oster is the brother of my great-grandfather Harrison Lawrence Oster b. Apr. 5, 1894 in Sunfield Township, Michigan d. Jan. 30, 1970 in Houghton Lake, MI. The Osters moved from New York and eventually settled in Michigan (first Sunfield Township and then Wheeler Township), but I haven't been able to find much of anything on John Wesley Oster, such as if he moved with the rest of the family or stayed in New York. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Family legend says that Eliza LINDSAY was born about 1819 in Armagh, Ireland, that her family moved to NY and her father ran a barge line on the Erie Canal. She married John HARRISON, another Irish-born. She died Dec. 8, 1857, weeks after the birth of her youngest child. On the 1850 census, her name is listed as Elizabeth. The family has a photograph of a Robert LINDSAY who may have been her father. Further information on any of these people would be greatly appreciated.

Our information says Jabez (Jabus) Hancock (b. 11-10-1753-d. 9-1819) came w/ family (we think his father & siblings) from Longmeadow, Hampshire, MA. to Paris, NY. He married Temperance Beebe (b. 3-15-1765 Paris NY-died 11-27-1810) They had the following children:Tammie (?), Jabez (Jabus), Obid, Zina, Charlotte, & Zerah

Their son Jabez (Jabus) (b. 2-19-1793 / died 5-16-1872) married Eleanor (Elanor) Alger on 10-21-1818. Eleanor was born 2-10-1798 / died 4-10-1857. They had the following 4 children: William Rex, Abigail Eleanor, Charlotte Jerusha, and Edward Jabus. This couple is buried in Elton Cemetery in Freedom, NY

Charlotte Jerusha Hancock (known as Jerusha) (b. 1830-d.1896) married Daniel Brown (b. 1825-d. 1883), they are my husband's 2nd g-grandparents. Their children are William, Jesse, Sylvester, EllaMae, Charles and Byron (Byron is my husband's line)

We seek solid proof to link Temperance & Jabez to his father/family in Mass. We seek any information we can get; we think we may have a missing generation with a Jabez in it.

We have lots to share related to the Browns / Hancocks / Algers / Beebes and many more families who are related who wound up in Freedom, Cattaragus Co., NY after 1820; many stayed , some moved west , some are still there.

Any info, PLEASE E-MAIL US at : schwanja723@aol.com

JSchwan
schwanja723@aol.com

Ellen Giles (Philpott) - Father L. A. Giles

Searching for information on the father of Ellen Giles Philpott. Ellen Giles Philpott,1846-1916, buried in Oriskany Cemetery, was the daughter of Mary Judson and L A Giles, and married to Stephen Philpott.

L A Giles is all I can find and that's in the 1850 census. He is listed as 30 years old, a boatman, and as having been born in NY. In the 1880 Census for Ellen Philpott, spelled "Philut" in this census, this census says that her father was born in Connecticut.

In the 1860 Census in Oneida, Mary Giles is living with her mother, Ellen Judson, and daughter Ellen, but it appears that L A has passed away. Looking in the 1840 census, there doesn't appear to be an L A, and seeing that the children and wife's name is not listed, it has made things difficult. Also, not having a name makes searching other indexes very difficult.

Obituraries for Ellen Giles Philpott did not list her parents. Actually, felt like I could find only a short death notice for her at fultonhistory.com. It appeared there was no Sunday paper on the website, which was to be her funeral date.

Any help or guidance appreciated.
Steve

I can't seem to find what L A stands for

Could anyone provide advice on how to locate a birth/baptismal record or where to go from here? He was listed on census records as a laborer, Teamster, farmer. He was of a protestant denomination, possibly Presbyterian or Congregational. Henry married Sara Ann Colvin in LaSalle Co., IL in 1855. She was born in Ohio to Heman Colvin and Mary Tiff.

I would be grateful for any suggestions/assistance.
Thank you,
Lori

Jacob Bunce, Waterville / Sangerfield, 1814

This Jacob Bunce was a stone mason and did the brick work on the high school built in 1814-1815. He he may also have been known as "Jake", "Daddy" Bunce, and "Old Spindle", and considered to be very well read, outspoken, and eccentric or possibly a bit mental and unkempt.

Does anyone have addition information on this Jacob and or the following, and where they might fit in the known Bunce genealogy?

I believe he is my gggg grandfather. If so, he was married to Clarissa Keyes, sister of Pardon Keyes, daughter of Daniel Keyes. My ggg grandfather, Sidney A. Bunce, was born in Waterville 5/15 Feb 1814. According to "Genealogy, Robert Keyes of Watertown, Mass., 1633, Solomon Keyes of Newbury and Chelmsford, Mass., 1653, and their descendants: also others of the name", Clarissa Keyes (b. 27 Sep 1785, d. about 1840) and J. Bunce were married 21 Jan 1810. Sidney had two sisters, Mary and Clara (possibly Clarissa).

Sidney was a County Supervisor of Vernon in 1858-1859, and again in or through 1864. In "Our County and Its People, A Descriptive work on Oneida County, New York", edited by Daniel E. Wager, there are no other Bunces listed as being a Supervisor in Vernon. The Waterville Times (fultionhistory.com), December 11, 1858, has an article listing the various Supervisors, by last name only. Regarding Bunce it says “Bunce, of Vernon, is a son of Jacob Bunce, formerly from Waterville, and is a talented, and efficient Supervisor.”

The Waterville Times, about May 20/21 1861. “Returned.—We are glad to notice, as a resident returned among us, after many long years of absence, Miss Clarissa Bunce, daughter of the late Jacob Bunce. How long Miss B. intends to remain, we know not—we hope always. Although none of the numerous circle of her relations now live here, as formerly, she has a large one of friends. Miss B. is literary in her vocation, and has written much and well.” I believe this to be Sidney's sister Clara/Clarissa. This also indicates that Jacob had died before this date, and that other Bunce relatives were no longer living in Waterville.

I believe that J. Bunce's daughter Mary, married J. (John) Allison Smith. Mary, who married J. A. Smith, was born in May 1817 in Oneida County, New York. They were married 1842 in Washington, Washington County, Pennsylvania, where Mary had also attended school. According to 1880 Census, her father and mother were born in New York. The 1900 Census says her mother was born in Connecticut. In 1850, the Smiths and Mary's sister, Clarissa Bunce, were living in Lebanon, Warren County Ohio. There is a gravestone for a Clarissa Bunce, "Mother", in Pioneer Cemetery in Lebanon, no dates.

Sidney married Chloeann M. Pettibone 23 May 1837, and in 1840 they were living in Morgan, Ashtabula County, Ohio, adjacent to Crawford County, Pennsylvania. Their daughter, Gertrude Amelia Bunce, was born 18 Jun 1838 in northern Ohio. In the 1850 and 1860 Census enumerations, Sidney (1850, Sydney), Chloe and Gertrude were living in Vernon, Oneida County, New York. Gertrude married William Henry Harrison Miller 23 Dec 1863 in Vernon, law partner of and U.S. Attorney General to Benjamin Harrison.

Thank you for any help.
Lucy

I am trying to locate history on the Benjamin POTTER family who resided in Oneida County until about 1840. Benjamin POTTER born late 1700's possibly Oneida Co. NY,and wife Polly CLEVELAND born about 1805 Oneida Co NY. About 1845 they moved to WI and eventually settled in Dane Co. WI. I am sure they had more than one child born in Oneida Co. NY but I have only one that I know for certain and that was Jerome Bertram POTTER born 1826 in Oneida Co and married Amanda TRUESDELL who was born 1829 maybe in Oneida Co. They married 1849 in Oneida Co. Most of the above info that I do have was found in family trees with Ancestry.com. If anyone has any history or knowledge of this family, please contact me.

Stephen Philpott - Buried in Oriskany Cemetery

Trying to find more information about this Philpott (Philputt) line. In the Oriskany Cemetery in Oneiday, there is buried Stephen Philpott b.1836 d.1899, and I belive his wife, Ellen A. Philpott b.1846 d.1916. Also belive that their son, George H. is buried there, but I could be mistaken.

Stephen Philpott married Ellen Giles. I am tracing the line of their daughter, Mary Frances Philputt, who married George Myers.

Haven't been able to find out anything about the parents of Stephen Philpott. My research has pretty much ended with him. He does appear in the 1870 Census of Whitestown, along with wife (Ellen Giles, daughter of Mary Judson Giles), daughter Mary (Frances Philpott Myers) and son George.

He may be in the 1850 Census, listed at 10 years old, but I am unsure if this is him or his father--the Head of that household is James Fillpot, listed as being 50 and having been born in England.

Again, trying to trace this line back and any help appreciated. Plan on visiting Oneida County in May (from Florida) so hope to get ready to do some more research!

Steve

I am presently searching a branch of my family that came to New Hartford in the early 1830 - this was a Solomon Day and his wife Ann. I have traced the family through to the 1930 census and would like to get up to date if possible. They have also lived at Kirkland, Westmoorland and Vernon.

I have found a Beulah Day, the daughter of Ralph Day and Eve Mowers, who married an Adelbert Risley and had a son Allen Risley born in 1925. I believe he presently lives in Rome.

Ralph and Eve had other children Royce, Bernice, Elwood and Thomas.

Any help in tracing any of these families would be gretly appreciated.

Roy Day
Clevedon, England

Samuel and Susannah (Sergeant) Barnard were early settlers of Whitestown, Oneida County and died there in 1799 and 1801. They were from Stow, MA. They have had several children attributed to them as being born in Whitestown: (John, 1780; Silas, 1782; Joel 1784; Susanna, 1786; and Lydia, 1788). Since Whitestown was not settled until 1784, this data is suspect. I am trying to find information on John Barnard, especially who he married. John was the father of my g-g-grandfather, Sherman Sargent Barnard, b. 1805 in Jefferson County.

Could anyone look in the 1850 Trenton census for the following people: James and Perry Shove. I found an index at the GenWeb page, and I do not even know if they were in the area in 1850, all I have is this from Bios of Monroe Co People:

Perry Shove, residence 111 Atkinson street. Born in Utica, N. Y., August 18, 1844. Appointed patrolman May 1, 1900; park officer.

James was born about the same time (1844), I think the brothers were twins.

And this index listing from the page as well:
Last name, first, page:
Shove Anson 36
Shove Caroline 37
Shove Charles 32
Shove Elisa 32
Shove George 32
Shove Lafayette 37
Shove Laura 37
Shove Mary 37
Shove Ransom 32
Shove Samuel 32
Shove Srvilla 32

If anyone can get back to me and let me know if any of these people are James' and Perry's parents, that would be great.

Researching the George L. Clark families of Western, Oneida Co., NY. There is a George L. Clarke in the 1820 and 1830 Western census. He would have been born between 1760 - 1770. He may be the George Clark who died on 14 Aug. 1849 at the age of 83 of consumption. I think he is the father of:
George L. Clark Jr. (born abt 1802) and is in the 1830 Western census. There is a George L. Clark (probably Jr.) in the 1840 Western census.
I believe the George L. Clark Jr. moved to Lowell, Dodge Co., WI by 1850.
In 1860 they had moved to Concord, Dodge Co., MN.
George L. Clark married Elizabeth Abby/Abbey.
Their children: George L. Clark Jr. born 1822, Joseph born 1829 Jerusha born 1830, Henry born 1833, Woodruff born 1837, Esther born 1838, Alfred born 1842, Sarah Jane born 1843, Peter Harrison born 1844, Jeanette born 1846 and Caroline born 1849. All the children were born in NY except Caroline who was born in WI.

I have a Jonathan or "Jack" McConnell in my line from the mid to late 1700's and he was supposedly a veterinarian. Married a Hannah Covert or Varco of Pennsylvania Dutch descent. Can anyone help??
Thanks.
Becky

JAMES PIERCE b 1817 NY to WI (Fought in Canadian Rebellion of 1837/8)

Requesting information regarding a JAMES PIERCE (b. 1817NY), possibly Oneida Co., and family.

James Pierce fought in the Canadian Rebellion of 1837/8. He was captured at the Battle of the Windmill and transported to VanDieman's Land (Tasmania) Penal Colony in 1839. Records at his trial indicate he was from Jefferson (Orleans) and Oneida Counties. He was pardoned after serving a few years, returned to New York, married a Fidelia Pierce in 1850 in Oneida Co. and had a son, Edward, b. about 1851.

I have found James and Fidelia Pierce in the 1850 Oneida County Census in Marshall living with a Jesse & Nancy Patrick. By 1857 he and his family had moved west to the frontier in Kewaunee County Wisconsin and purchased land in Pierce Town - named after James Pierce. He is found in the 1860 Census in the Town of Pierce in Kewaunee County, WI.

James died 1 Feb 1863 at the age of 46 of Smallpox. His wife and son died just weeks later. No death records exist here because it was so early in our county's history.

I'm looking for parents & siblings of James Pierce and any other Pierce Family info.

I appreciate any help you can give me and thank you for your time.

Jill Dopke
jgdopke@itol.com
