DeCuffa, Tarpey, and Moore families of Utica, NY.

I need help finding things like, obituaries, birth announcements, marriage announcements, immigration certificates, death and birth certificates, and anything else.
The first family are the DeCuffas. Ive seen it spelled DiCuffa, De Cuffa, Di cuffa, DeCufa also.
Giuseppe (Joseph) DeCuffa-b. 1887, Italy. d. 3/10/1933
Assunta (Bevalacqua) DeCuffa-b.2/12/1888, Esperia, Italy. D. 6/23/1937.
Anthony DeCuffa-3/21/1914-7/25/1958 Utica, NY.
Michael S. DeCuffa-7/31/1912-1/10/2009 Utica, NY.
Raymond A. DeCuffa-4/23/1920-1/27/2000 Utica, NY.
Madeline Ellen DeCuffa-3/21/1916-11/2/2004 Utica, NY.
*Married: Marco John Martino-3/30/1916-5/15/1954 Utica, NY.
Mary Grace DeCuffa-3/23/1919-12/23/1999 Utica, NY.
Rose DeCuffa-Alive
The DeCuffa family owned a bakery called the DeCuffa Brother's Bakery on Bleeker Street, Utica, NY.
Madeline DeCuffa Martino is my great-grandmother.
Im pretty sure that Giuseppe came here in 1910 on a ship called the oceania from Napoli, Italy. He changed the spelling from Di Cuffa to DeCuffa.
------------------------------------------------------------
The next family are the Tarpeys. I do not know anything other than this:
Anna Mae Tarpey spelled different ways married Truman A. Moore. They had a son, John Patrick Moore. Truman died 4/6/1966. They lived in Utica but Im not sure if they were born there. Anna Tarpey was born in Ireland to Patrick and Delia Tarpey. She was born about 1899-1901. This is all the info I know.
------------------------------------------------------------The next family are the Moores.
Truman Andrew Moore-b.5/20/1887-4/6/1966
*married Anna Mae Tarpey.
Parents were:
John M. Moore(1860) and Clara A. Felton(1866).
He was born in Colton, NY.

If you have any info or can help I would really appreciate it.
Thank you!!!

In May 2007, someone posted a request for help with information on Curious Fox in the UK. They wished to find information about a George Stockton and wife Elizabeth nee Aspin, born in Warrington, Lancs - he about 1832. The correspondent gave no name or contact details and these is now no listing. Their great grandfather was a Thomas Stockton and grandfather was William Stockton.
If anyone knows of this enquirer, the Secretary of the Stockton Society has someone else who is researching the same family.
Do get in touch!

Carolyn,
Thanks for your help. I had someone look for my Hays in St. Lawrence Co., but no luck. I do not know the history of the formation of St. Lawrence Co., but I do know that Lewis Co.was once a part of Oneida Co.(around 1800) so I had the Oneida Co. Historical Society look for Frederick and William Hays (Hayes, etc.) but they had no luck either. I have had the Herkimer Co. Historical Society search as well as the one in Little Falls, but again nothing that would identify William Hay's parents. No death record exists for him and his obit only says "born in NY". I guess I am up against the proverbial brick wall.
All the Best.
Jon

I also have found error on familysearch, have contacted the submitter and have been told they only record from microfilm, thus it must be correct. In this case, the person who recorded it is on the record and the microfilm number so more than likely they will not change it but you can try.

Sorry, I am in NC and do not have access to NY birth records.

You probably know that Oneida county was formed from Herkimer County; it borders Lewis,Herkimer, Madison, Otsego counties. I may be wrong but it seems that St Lawrence county was once part of Oneida county before 1800. Perhaps someone in that area will be able to help.

Best wishes,
Carolyn

Thanks for your replies and lookups. The William Hays record you found on familysearch.org is a mistake. The individual who posted that made a big assumption about birth place. William J. Hays was a son of William Hays, but he was born in Morrisville, Madison Co., NY not Morristown, St. Lawrence Co. The name Morristown was on William J.'s obit, but it was never thoroughly checked out. Two assumptions were made: (1) that Morristown must be correct, therefore it must be St. Lawrence Co., even though St. Lawrence was not mentioned in the obit; 2) if William J. was born in Morristown, then William F. Hays and Mary Francis Eaton must have been born there too.

I have not seen the Fredericus Hays and Catharine Saeger marriage record before. I will see if I can find them in a Census record. My William F. Hays and Mary Francis Eaton were Methodist/Episcopal from all records I have found. I suppose it is possible that his parent's were Ref. Dutch. Do you have access to any of their birth records? If so, maybe you could check to see if they had any children.
Thanks.
Jon

My great grandfather was called Edward McNerney, but I know very little about him. All my grandma tells me is that he came to Malta from Scotland and married her mother. He died back in the 70s at around 85 years of age.Doubt that this is the man you're looking for though.

I also know, some relatives are burried at St. Mary's in the Town of Florence, N.Y. with the surname of Ludden and Sullivan. I don't have any information from the cemetery on the Sullivans.

I somehow missed your reply (Nov. 2008) to my post re: William F. and Frederick Hays. I had just moved from Mich. to Minn. and was taking care of grand kids. I have been working on several other genealogy lines since then and just returned to reviewing Hays line. Yes, I also have the marriage notice you found of William F. Hays and Miss (Mary) Frances Eaton. That notice also said they were married by J. J. Downing. He was a Method./Episcopal minister in Little Falls at the time. Unfortunately the volume containing church marriage records from that time period is apparently missing. I have both William F. and Mary Frances Eaton's birth records, census records, children's births, the family move to Iowa and then SD, etc. but I still cannot find the parents of William F. Hays (they were born in NY). According to the New York 1855 Census, William F. was born in Lewis Co., but a thorough search by the Lewis Co. Historical Society could not find him. If you have any ideas, I would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks.
Jon

Thank you so much for this info. The post from last night was going to be my final attempt to locate Zury Spear and Rhoda Barber. Maria Spear was my great grandmother. She married William Harrison Whitney in Wisconsin and had 1 son, Hubert Wood who was my grandfather. My dad's name was Ray and he was #8 out of 10 children. He was a twin, the twin brother didn't survive. On the handwritten family tree, there is no mention of an Althea. Just the wedding date of Oct 1819 in Hillsboro NY. The names of the children are listed and the spouses of the ones who married. Thanks again, JoAnn Whitney Vestal.
I am researching my Gransfather Leo Duffy who was married to my Grandmother Loretta Messenger Duffy. Had a great deal of luck finding the Messenger side of the family and traced it back quite a ways. My grandmother's mother Bridget Gagan I traced back to her father Hugh Gagan. Found a good site, however, and believe I can go further back in Ireland.
My problem is that I am stuck with my Grandfather Leo Duffy on my mother's side. My father's side Patrick W.English and my father's Mother Lena Dooley English I have the same problem. No further back other than my grandparents and it stops.
All of these people lived for many years in the Utica area.

Patrick,

In the Nov. 8, 1911 issue of the Utica Herald Dispatch is this:
The marriage of Leo J. Duffy of 1206 Bleecker St. and Miss Loretta Messenger of 371 1/2 Seymour Avenue took place in St. Francis De Sales Church Monday. The cermony was performed by the Rev. Father Daniel Doody and Earl Hayes and Miss Mabel messenger attended the couple. A reception was held later at the home of the bride.

The 1910 census shows a Duffy family living at 1206 Bleecker St. in the 8th ward of Utica:
John Duffy 65, b. Ireland, engineer at cotton mill,
Amra R Duffy, wife,61, b. Ireland
Julia T Duffy, dau. 34
James J Duffy, son, 27
Edward S Duffy, son, 25
Katherine M Duffy, dau., 22
Anna V Duffy, dau., 20
Leo Duffy, son, 18
children all b. NY

I took a look at your tree & I see that you have the SSDI record for a Leo Duffy who died in Jan of 1978 in Utica. This is probably not your Leo Duffy. The Jan. 12 issue of the Harlem Valley Times has an obit for a Leo A. Duffy of Utica who died Jan 3rd. He was married to a Florence Henry who died in 1967 & had three children, Mary Jane Duffy & Martin Duffy of Utica & James Duffy.

You can find these newspaper articles at: http://www.fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html I searched for "Loretta Messenger" to find the marriage & for the obit "Leo Duffy" +Utica +died. Searching for "Leo Duffy" + Utica brought up too many hits to go through; many are ads, I think.

Pat R.

Researching daughter and first wife of Arthur Nodecker (Fred Nodecker/Lizzie Nodecker parents) born abt 1905, son Edwin B Nodecker. Arthur's daughter Laura May aged 4 mos and wife with unknown first name & maiden name aged 35, both died in car crash in Fulton in 1927. Arthur later married Lillian Nodecker. Both Arthur & Lillian are buried in Lakeside cemetary in Hamlin, NY.
Any clues would be helpful. Not sure of the parents/siblings of Fred Nodecker & wife Lizzie either as my Grandfather Edwin B Nodecker is now deceased.
Lorena -

You are a gift from heaven!!
I don't know if you are still doing this, but here is what I am
trying to find....

Philip Mehrhoff (b. abt 1803 Hesse Darmstadt) is my GGGG Grandfather.
He came to NY with his children (Nicholas, Catherine, Peter and Philip)
in the 1840s.

The sons all stayed in the Westchester area. But the elder Philip moved to
Verona with his wife, Catherina by 1860. Their daughter, Catherine,
married Pantaleon Schopp and moved to Verona also, to raise their family.

In Verona, there is another Mehrhoff family that are not children of
Philip, but are surely related somehow. My guess would be brother to Philip.
But if I could find some connection, it would be great.

John W. Mehrhoff (b. abt 1794, Germany) arrived in NY sometime
prior to 1850. His wife Charlotte (b. abt 1800 Hesse Darmstadt)
and children (John Nicholas, Daniel, Caroline, Johannes and Mary
Barbara) immigrated 20 Sept 1841. John W was not with them in
the manifest, so I assume he was already here.
Was John Philip's brother? THey are both buried in St Peter's Lutheran
cemetery. (Philip is buried next to Daniel, John's son)

Also.... in the 1850 census, I found a William Mehrhoff living
in a home near John W. William was born in 1773 (germany). He is
living with the Hager and Agne families.

My guess would be that this WIlliam(1773) is the father of Philip(1803)
and John(1794) and some daughter who married into either the
Hagar or Agne family.

I am unable to find the burial place of William. And I cannot
find any other evidence of WIlliam, besides the 1850 US Fed
Census.

THanks for any help you can provide.

Diane Kelly

Sir:

If you are still interested, I believe I can help you out. I am helping research the Rosenthal/Silverman family of Utica. They have been in Utica since the 1850s. At least one Silverman (a Moses Silverman) married a Fink in approx 1914 and I believe they moved out to Los Angeles. I am not sure what happened to Moses Silverman, but his wife Susie Fink later married a Jack Pine. Susie Fink died in LA in 1966 and was buried in Utica.

The Finks that I am aware of owned a clothing distribting business in Utica that was bought by the Smiths/Silvermans in the late 1950s.

I can't find anything on my great-grandfather, Marco Martino. The only info I know is that he was married to my great-grandmother, Madeline Ellen DeCuffa Martino. Together they had a son, Joseph Edward Martino, and a daughter, Suzanne Marie Martino. Marco lived in Utica, New York. I don't know if he was born there or in Italy. Im pretty sure that he may have died in Utica. Madeline and Marco divorced in 1948 I think. After that nobody in my family has any clue as to what happened to him. My great-grandma said that he died of cancer. My grandma said that he died in a car accident. And my mom said that he was murdered by a rival mobster. I don't know which one is true or if any of them are true. PLEASE HELP !!! THANKS !!!
