I'm searching for my friend who is new to genealogy. Her information about her Campbell ancestors came from a letter written to her mother in 1926, who was born and raised in Tennessee, by a woman named Mary B. Van Vliet who lived at the time in Auburn, NY. Miss Van Vliet is the child of Henry Van Vliet and Mary Gilles. Margaret Gilles, sister of Mary Gilles Van Vliet married Alden Asher Campbell of Elbridge.
The story goes that my friend's great-grandfather got in some trouble in New York, so he changed his name to Cameron and left for the south. His name originally was probably Duncan Campbell. We traced him in TN as Duncan Cameron from 1900 to his death in the 1930s, but have not been able to find anything to substantiate Miss Van Vliet's claim that he is related to the family of Alden Campbell. The only link to NY is in the census reports which state that his birthplace is NY about 1846.
Any clues will be greatly appreciated.
