The Rev. Dr. George M. Merschroth, pastor of St. PaulÂ’s Lutheran church and one of the best known German citizens in the State, died early this morning at the Hospital of the Good Shepherd. Diabetes caused death.

He had been confined to his bed for nearly two months., Until Wednesday his family looked for his recovery. On that day Dr. Merschroth was rushed to the hospital. Physicians had planned to amputate his leg. He was too weak, however, and his condition failed rapidly.

Dr. Merschroth was president of the Lutheran MinistersÂ’ association and was also president of the German Conference of New York and New Jersey. He was rated as one of the best German scholars in this part of the country.

Dr. Merschroth was born at Hahn, Psungstat, Germany, fifty-three years ago. He came to this country more than thirty years ago. After completing his ministerial studies in Chicago he became pastor of a church in Pomeroy, Ia. In that city he married Augusta Reinhard. Twenty-nine years ago Dr. Merschroth came to Syracuse and became pastor of St. PaulÂ’s church. During his pastorate the church and parsonage at Oswego and Shonnard streets were built. Beside his widow he leaves three daughters, Miss Marie Merschroth, Miss Lydia Merschroth and Mrs. Augusta Van Lengen, wife of Dr. Nicholas W. Van Lengen.

The body will lie in state in the church from 10:30 oÂ’clock to-morrow morning until noon on Monday, during which time the public may view it. At 2 oÂ’clock Monday afternoon a funeral service will be held in the church.

A number of out of town clergymen will come to Syracuse to attend the funeral. There will be no church service or Sunday school at St. PaulÂ’s church to-morrow.
