Has anyone done indexes of baptisms in 1910 Syracuse? I am looking for a baptism of Kenneth Funnell July 14, 1908(?) , Dorothy Funnell date unknown probably pre 1908, and Harriette Funnell 1910-1915. Parents George Edwin and Harriette Frear Funnell. Probably in a Methodist Church. George Edwin lived at 406 Shonnard St. and Harriette lived at 213 Kellogg Street so I assume that they would have been baptized in a church in that vacinity.

Anyone know where I can access church history in that area and time.

Any help welcome.

daughter of Harriette Funnell (child), granddaughter of Harriette Frear

Sharon in Western Canada
My G-g-grandfather John J Landers family lived in Virginia. He was born in New York, Sullivan or Onondaga County abt.1820. He married Angeline Hill from Conn.

Can't seem to get further back, but I think that the Landers of Onondaga are his relatives. I can't find him in 1850. Not sure if he was married yet. There were lots of brothers and sisters. Have some info on Benjamin Landers in Onondaga, who I think is a connection. My Great-grandfather was named Benjamin and born in Guilderland.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Thank You
Judy

My great grandmother, Catherine Windhausen, died in 1902 according to records from Assumption Cemetery in Onondaga Co. on Aug. 9, 1902. The copy I have from the cemetery books is not real clear. My great grandfather, Peter Windhausen, died in April 1899, is buried next to her. I was able to get an uncertified copy of his death record, but they said they did not have one for Catherine. They suggested I check in Homer, Tully, and Cortland which I did by phone and they did not have records for her either. I work full time and it is hard to get to Syracuse when the courthouse, etc. is open. I live over 3 hours away. I have hit a brick wall here. Where is her death record? I also have not been able to find an obit for either of them at the library. I hope someone might be able to help me. Thank you in advance.
Mary

Newcomb Family, Prussia -> Onondaga County, Ny

Hello!

I'm looking into the NEWCOMB side of my family, originally from Prussia (Germany), I believe, who settled in Baldwinsville, NY.

I know that my Great Grandfather was Charles E. NEWCOMB (birth Sept 17, 1889 in Baldwinsville, Onondaga, New York; death April 8, 1959 in Fort Plain, Montgomery, New York). He married Editha BOWMAN (birth 1897; death 1933), who I have much more information about (parents and grandparents). They had three children (one was my grandfather).

My family did not know much more information about Charles, but from looking at census records (and military records) I see that at one point in time another Charles, Charles Sr. (b. 1859 - d. 1923, both in Baldwinsville), was living with Charles and Editha's family. Thus I assume that Charles is actually Charles Jr. and Charles Sr. is his father. And I recently found out that Charles Sr.'s wife and Charles Jr.'s mother was Olive ROBINSON. I don't have any other information on her or her family. So that's one more generation that we didn't have before.

My question is with Charles Sr.'s parents. My family thinks that when they moved over to America, they changed the name from NUNNENKAMP/NUNENKAMP to NEWCOMB (which would make sense other Newcombs were in the area and the name is slightly similar). So I'm not sure if Charles Sr. name was different or if his father's was different.

When looking at census records there are two NEWCOMB families with Charles in them in the area and I am not sure if either is the person I'm looking for. In another record (military, I believe) I found a Charles NEWCOMB (Charles Sr., I assume), with a father Christian NONCAMP (b. 1818, d. 1878) and mother Charlotte UNKNOWN (b. 1799, d. 1879) from Prussia...this may have been the NUNNENKAMP/NUNENKAMP spelled incorrectly, but I'm not positive.

I did find a census record of a Christian and Charlotte NEWCOMB with three children, Augusta (b. 1856 in Prussia), William (b. 1857 in Baldwinsville) and Charles (b. 1859 in Baldwinsville). I now assume I have found the correct family and names.

Would anyone have anymore information this NEWCOMB/NUNNENKAMP/NUNENKAMP family from Baldwinsville?

Thank you!

Darius Gleason b. CT - 1820-1850 Census Onondaga County

Hello,

Just read your message from '05, and it caught my eye because we have ancestors, Darius GLEASON, b. 1795, somewhere in Conn. HE is found in Onondaga Co. NY in 1820-1850 census, then he moved to Ingham County, MI before 1860. He is also on the 1870 census there, but no death record, so I have no clue who his parents were. Two sons of his many children are Philander,b. 1820, and Eli W. b. 1839, both b. Camillus, Onondaga, Another possible son is Levi Gleason who died in 1852 in Monroe Co.

We also have KING ANCESTORS in Wayne and Ontario counties in NEw York in the 1850-1920 era. I am stuck on David King, b. NY, who had our ggrandfather, George Andrew King in 1850,NY and a daughter Sarah in 1855. Can't find David with his family in 1850, and he may have died before 1860 because his wife Aurilla (GRAVES) was remarried to a Ira WILLET by then. But George Andrew is not living with them, and I can't find him until 1880 in Michigan, then back
Wayne andOntario New YOrk by 1885. He died in 1903 in Phelps, ONtario, NY.
If any of these names ring a bell to anyone, I would appreciate hearing from you....Thanks,

Judy Gleason from Michigan

Thomas Molloy, "Syracuse, was born in County Westmeath, Ireland, in 1819, and came to America with his parents in 1833, settling in the town of Florence, Oneida Co., whence he came to Syracuse in 1837, where he still resides. He was foreman on the New York Central for several years, and laid the first T rail on the latter route in Onondaga Co., and later was foreman of the Cape Vincent division of the R., W. & O. Railroad. Starting life poor in worldly goods, but endowed with a liberal supply of native energy and perseverance, he wisely invested his savings in real estate and ultimately accumulated a competency, and permanently retired from active life about 1870. He supported himself from a very early age, and was in every sense a self-made man. He married Ann Murphy, a native of County Clare, Ireland, who died Nov. 20, 1893. They had eight children, of whom four died young; the others are Mary Ann (Mrs. Richard Hackett), of Oshkosh, Wis.; Thomas H.; Ellen (Mrs. John Murphy); and Lizzie (Mrs. Edward McNulty), of Syracuse."

I am researching the James Miller family who moved from Herkimer Co. to
Onondaga Co. NY in 1832. They moved to the shores of Lake Onondaga near
Syracuse and went into the salt production business. The business was called
the Salina Salt Works. in 1844 the business failed and they moved to
Somonauk, Illinois.
1. Andrew Miller b.1756 Holland immigrated to Allentown, Pa. then he
mustered out in 1783 to Albany N.Y. Children were born there. Married
Catherine_?_ in Albany. He died in 1853 Somonauk, Illinois.

2.Francis Thomas Miller 1790-1868 Somonauk, Illinois He never married.

2.Sarah Miller b. abt 1799 m. Daniel Baum in NY

*2.James Miller 1797-1845 He married Annetje Van Vorst(Nancy Ann) abt
1818 in Schenectady NY. She was the daughter off Jacobus Van Vorst and
Willempie Truax who was the daughter of Peter Truax.
They moved to Herkimer Co. and had a farm on the Mohawk River from 1818-1832
where their first 7 children were born. From their to Onondaga Co., then to
Illinois. Children were:
Catherine Miller 1818-1818
Peter Miller 1820-1821
James Andrew Miller 1821-1906 m. Mary Hoxie
Eliza Ann Miller 1823-1895 m. John Everham
Mary Almira Miller 1826-1891 m. John Gibson
Samuel Houp Miller 1828-1917 m. Alice Boyce
Sophie Miller 1830-1901 m. John Craig
Robert Giles Miller 1833-1881 m. Emily L. Ross
Walter Clute Miller** 1835-1915 m. Harriett Hamilton
Francis Thomas Miller 1835-1922
William H. Miller 1837-1926 m. Mary Ann Richmond

Does anyone have any information on this family in Onondaga Co.? Is anyone
familiar with the Salina Salt Works.I believe the salt business failed about
1844 when Lake Onondaga broke through and diluted the springs. Also their
was great competition with other businesses.
I believe that James's sister Sarah (Miller) Baum remained in Syracuse with
her family. His daughter Sophie (Miller) Craig also moved back to the
Syracuse area with her husband. She married John Craig in 1850.
Thank you for any help.

Does St. Mary's Catholic Church still exist? My great, great, grandfather and grandmother's youngest son was born in Syracuse. This Irish Catholic family probably attended St. Mary's as they arrived in Syracuse from County Kerry around 1847. Michael Griffin, their son, was born in 1849. Grandmother Griffin always had the children baptised immediately. Can anybody help? Where would his baptismal certificate be located? I'd like to know who the sponsors were and the exact date of his death.

Searching for the parents of Reuben Smith, born 15 July 1755 in Brookfield, Worcester, MA. Married Mehitable Earle. Served in the Revolutionary War in units out of Vermont, 1774-1779. He was living in the Guilford, Windham County, VT area. During 1787-1790 was living in Cherry Valley, Otsego County, NY. He also lived in Whitestown, Oneida County, NY. 1801-1831 lived in Herkimer County. In 1810 and 1820 lived in Camillus, Onondaga County, NY. In 1832 Reuben and some of his children moved to St. Clair County, MI. Reuben died 2 February 1840 and is buried in the Smith Cemetery near Marine City, MI.
Children: William, Gardner, Martha, Rufus, Lucinda, John and Newell.
This family is part of the Smith DNA project and because of a mutation in one of the markers, shows a tight relationship with Lt. Samuel Smith, 1602-1681, of MA.
John E. Millard, circa 1874-1906

I still need some assistance in looking for a family member in the Onondaga County, New York area. For one thing, I would like to find the famly of John E. and Mary Millard in the New York State census probably liiving in Manlius, NY, as they were in 1900 Federal Census.

John Elmer Millard, b. 1874 in KS, was living in the Onondaga area in 1905 according to old family stories. In fact, his father is also found in Onondaga, Onondaga County, NY, in the 1900 Census with his second wife, Sarah. John's father was David Louden Millard, b. 1844 in NY, probably there in Onondaga County, and died there in 1905 and is buried in Pine Ridge Cemetery.

I believe John and Mary Millard had two daughters (Florence and Lulu) who are later found in the Onondaga Orphans home in 1910 indicating that he died. Old family stories say he came to KS in early 1906 after his father died and never arrived, possibly died along the way somewhere. The daughters (Florence and Lulu Millard) are shown in the 1910 Census in the Onondaga Orphans Home.

Mary Millard appears to be a dressmaker, shown as a widow in 1910, and living in Syracuse.

I would appreciate any assistance anyone can offer. If anyone knows where the Onondaga Orphan's Home records are for the 1910-1920 time period, I would like to know what happened to these cousins of mine. Please contact me at chartemp@aol.com for further information.

"Chief Johnny Big Tree" NA film actor may have posed for the "Indian Head" nickel
I’m hoping someone can find a obit or other information (1920 & 1930 census records) on Isaac Johnny John or Johns, aka, “Chief Johnny Big Tree”, my distant cousin, a Native American actor (Seneca ?) born 15 June 1889 and died 6 Jul 1967 on the Onandaga Indian Reservation (south of Syracuse) in New York. I can’t find him in the US SSDI. I’m hoping to get a death certificate for him if I had his SSN.

If he died on the Reservation and is buried there, What is the name of the cemetery ? Are there any on-line index for NA cemeteries in NY? I would also like to have a pix of his tombstone, if there is one.

From All Movie Guide: Best known for having posed for artist Robert Fraser's famous Indian head nickel, Chief John Big Tree (real name Isaac John) enjoyed a screen career lasting 1915-1950. Among his countless Westerns, large and small, Big Tree played important roles in the controversial The Spirit of '76 (1917) and such epics as The Big Trail (1930), Drums Along the Mohawk (1939), and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949). ~ Hans J. Wollstein, All Movie Guide

Chief Big Tree can be 'googled' to see his list of films and brief bios.

Sincerely grateful for any info

Dan in Oregon
Michael Hughes, Arthur G. Hughes and Edwin Hughes

I am looking for Syracuse telephone book info.
I am unable to find obituaries for any of these people. Michael is the father, Arthur and Edwin are his sons.
1930 census shows Arthur living on Lincoln Ave. Syr. He is a widower and is age 61. Arthur's wife's name is Minnie. Edwin disappears after 1887-1889 city directory. He is listed on Tallman St. ( Edwin C. Hughes as a woodworker ). Michael was living with Arthur in the 1910 census, but nothing after that.
Through the telephone books, I'm hoping someone can tell me when these names disappear. Sometimes it shows: deceased, removed to another town, etc. I know Syr. library has the telephone books on the 5th floor genealogy dept.
Thank you for any help you can supply.
My email is kaybob119@yahoo.com

(prob) 1803 and
Benjamin B. Moore b 1808. Probably sons of Hannah prior to her marriage to
James.

According to sources, Moses Carpenter had a brother John and John Carpenter's
second wife was Abigail Moore from Orange Co, dau of Benjamin Moore.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------
I recently found this information in the Onondaga Co. appointment of
guardians:

Abigail Moore of Fabius, guardian:

Henry Moore 11, Charles Moore 9, Josiah Moore 6, Augustus Moore 4, Mariah
Moore 2, children of Augustus Moore.

The name MARIAH is used by the Wisner family referring back several
generations to Mariah McDowell, maternal ancestor and

and the name AUGUSTUS is used later with James Wisner descendants.

1.
YEAGER/JAEGER/YAEGER - 1890's Syracuse - 4 sets of twins??

Thanks to Tom Roux, I now have death dates for some of my Syracuse relatives. One, Charlotte Jaeger Weinheimer, died in 1933, leaving (among others) a surviving daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Jaeger. In 1908, Elizabeth was listed in her father's (Hilarius Weinheimer) obit as Mrs. Henry Yeager.
Now in checking the 1900 & 1910 censuses for Henry Yeager/Jaeger/Yaeger in Syracuse I found a likely match. (wifes name same, and appropriate age, etc). 9 children are listed in 1910 - 4 pairs of them the same age.. thinking this could be incorrect, I checked the 1900 census, and found 7 children listed, based on birthdates listed in the census .. apparently 3 sets of twins. It is likely that the 2 children of same age born between 1900-1910 are also twins.

Since this is obviously a pre-fertility drugs-era, would there have been news articles about this family - especially Elizabeth Yaeger/Jaeger/Yeager having birthed 4 sets of twins?
Twins were born in Dec 1891, Nov 1893, Jan 1898, and ca 1900-1901. Thanks for any leads anyone can provide.

I'm also wondering how Elizabeth's husband Henry is related to her mother (maiden name Jaeger) . In addition, does the fact that Elizabeth went from being called Mrs Henry Jaeger in 1908, to Mrs Elizabeth Jaeger in 1933, mean she divorced Henry, or she's now a widow?
(please reply to spw-ancestry at whatexit dot com)
Hi All,

I realize that Hannibal is in Oswego, and not in Onondaga county, but the family I'm asking about moved back & forth.

I am looking for an obituary which names the parents of Mary (May) Randall Guernsey who died in August 1890 in Hannibal, Oswego, NY. Her husband was Silas Guernsey and they had 8 sons.

Any help or ideas would be much appreciated. I have already searched the excellent Old Fulton History site but found nothing on her there.

I have also seen the wonderful book on the Guernsey family but it doesn't list her parents either.

TIA,
Allison Wise
Colorado

Juvenile home in Syracuse, 1943

Can anyone tell me the name of a juvenile home in Syracuse in 1943? I read about it in a Syracuse newspaper on Ancestry.com. The article didn't give the name of the home but it was for kids who got into legal trouble, like a reformatory, not a foundling home for poor, orphaned or abandoned kids. I didn't find anything on Google.

Thanks.
Jo

Does this information mesh with anyone? Thank you.

In 1893 he moved to East Syracuse, where he has also large property interests. He has filled the offices of road commissioner and excise commissioner several terms." Source: Bruce, Dwight H.
MC LYMAN, Nathan

Nathan McLyman, "Manlius, was born in the town of Manlius, April 4, 1826. His father, Jacob, was a native of New York State, probably Oswego Co. He was a cooper by trade and was for a number of years employed in Salina. At the time of the cholera epidemic in Syracuse, in 1832, both parents of Nathan were stricken and died. As Nathan was only eight years of age, he for a time made his home with his uncle, Nathan; also with his grandmother McLyman. When nine years of age he went to live with David Collin, with whom he remained until twenty-three years of age. January 1, 1849, he married Annie C., a daughter of David Castleman, a farmer of Manlius. After his marriage he settled on one of Mr. Collin's farms, where he made his home for ten years. In 1859 he moved to the Oak Grove farm, where he spent two years; then moved on to the Ambrose Clark farm, where he remained for three years. In 1864 he bought a farm of eighty-seven acres on Lot 67, where he made his home two years, then sold and bought a farm of seventy-three acres on Lot 67, where he has since made his home. He has greatly improved the property, and has now one of the pleasantest homes in the town. Mr. McLyman has been a member of the Baptist church for thirty years. He has five children living: Lucy, wife of George L. Taylor; Elle, wife of Byron Brower of Dolgeville, Herkimer Co., Sarah, wife of Adelbert
Rasbach of Dolgeville; Ambrose, a farmer of Manlius, and Mary, wife of Albert Daniels of Hartsville."
Camp Peck death, Adam GILCHER, 1852

I am researching the accidental death of a soldier, Adam GILCHER (aka Adam GILGER), a carpenter in Syracuse and a German member of the Lafayette Grenadiers, who was accidentally shot to death by James CRUMLEY, an Irish member of the National Guards, while the soldiers were in encampment at Camp Peck in October, 1852. Gilcher left behind a wife, Margaret, and children. Coroner Marsh held an inquest; the widow received a charitable donation raised among the members of the Syracuse National Guards.

Can anyone tell me where Camp Peck was located?

Can anyone tell me where I might find the Coroner's records of the inquest? Or the records of the Syracuse National Guards and/or the Lafayette Grenadiers?

My sources have been four newspaper clippings on this at www.fultonhistory.com, and Adam the carpenter's listing at 356 Lodi in the 1851 Syracuse city directory. A Margaret Gilger was listed living at 33 Isabella in the 1854 directory.

Can anyone suggest any other sources I might check to find out more?

Many thanks for any help.

Looking for information on Asa Eastwood. I was recently in Cicero, Onondaga County, and found several articles on him and his family, but as trying to find out the names of his parents and brothers. I believe him to be related to our Cornelius Eastwood b.1789 in Germany, but haven't been able to make a connection yet. Cornelius had a son Asa. Any information will be appreciated. I am trying to find more about a son known only as Z HART born to this couple. In accounts and bible records he is known only as "Z" and appears to be one of the older sons. Not on any census records but found one passenger list from panama to US in 1852 of a 24 yr old Z HART born New York. Any suggestions please contact me, thanks!

I do know that he deserted his family possibly in the late 1920's-early 1930's and went to New York City. Rumors were that he had a 2nd family. He probably died in NYC in the 1950's. Edward & Bessie had 4 children: Shepherd, Clarence, Beatrice, and Shirley.
There's nobody left in the family that knows anything about this mystery man who disappeared.

BERNSTEIN New York State Death Index lookup, please

Hello, All.

I need a key element to my genealogical research on the BERNSTEIN family.

Dudley BERNSTEIN, age 53, a single man, was an inmate in the Central Islip State Hospital in Suffolk County on the 1930 census. He had a history of mental illness. I believe he remained at the hospital until his death. Because of privacy concerns, the hospital will not reveal his date of death. Accordingly, I need, and would greatly appreciate, a lookup in the New York State Death Index.

Dudley was born 27 Nov 1886 in New York City. He was listed as Julius on the 1900 census, but subsequent records refer to him as Dudley. I regret that I cannot estimate a year of death. The 1930 census is the last record I have for him.

In return for the lookup, I am willing to do a commensurate amount of genealogical research.

Sincerely,
Bonnie

It's been over a year since I posted here, so I thought I would submit a new message.

My ggrandfather John Koberlein (Koeberlein, Koberline), b.1822 Heustreu, Bavaria, Germany, d.1888 Syracuse, and his wife Ana Seiffert came to America in 1873 and settled in the town of Geddes, near Syracuse.

With them was their son Louis, my grandfather, b.1856 Heustreu, d.1929 Rochester. He married Mary Schmahlholz, b. 1847 Rochester, d.1919 Rochester.

Their daughter Estelle, my mother, married John Cadogan.

Also with them were another son Theodore, b.1853 Heustreu, d.1899 Syracuse, and their daughters Eva (Louis Gally), Mina (Altpeter), and Margaret (Heinz).

I would like to know where in Germany John Koberlein and Ana Seiffert were married. Who were their parents. I have no information on Ana and her family, only that she was born about 1830 in Germany, married John in 1852, and died after 1888, probably in Syracuse.

I would appreciate any information available.

Can anyone help? In the Dec. 2 1917 obit for my great grandfather, Dr. Harry S. Peters, it said Herkimer and Syracuse papers please copy. His wife's, Mary Elizabeth Waters Peters, obit dated 1/6/1925 requested the same thing. I know Harry (real name Horatio) was born in Herkimer, and married. He supposedly had 2 children, James Peters, a New York stock broker and Esther Mae Peters who possibly married a Merrill and was possibly a doctor. Harry and this 1st wife divorced and he moved to the Pittsburgh area and married Mary Waters. This is all I know about the 1st marriage. I am assuming that Harry and Mary wanted these children to know their father and step-mother died. If this sounds familiar to anyone please contact me. Thank you.
Cindy

However, his death certificate states that he was born ca. 1822 in Memphis, Camillus Township, Onondaga County. I found James HOUSE on the 1820 census of Camillus Township living between two PICKARD families. My query is: where exactly might the family have been living in 1820?
I know that Henry's son, Jerome HOUSE, once lived on Bennett Corners Rd. outside of Memphis near the Oswego Bitters Cemetery. Does anyone know anything of this family or this area?
Thanks!
Patricia
