Hi All,

I am looking for an obituary which names the parents of Mary (May) Randall Guernsey who died in August 1890 in Hannibal, Oswego, NY. Her husband was Silas Guernsey and they had 8 sons.

Any help or ideas would be much appreciated. I have already searched the excellent Old Fulton History site but found nothing on her there.

I have also seen the wonderful book on the Guernsey family but it doesn't list her parents either.

TIA,
Allison Wise
Colorado

Jehiel [sic, Joel?] WEED & wife Catherine KILBORN of Oswego Co NY & Canada

The will of David Kilborn (written 1839, recorded 1846) in Oswego Co. mentions his daughter, "Catherine in Canada, now wife of Jehiel Weed." Most likely this "Jehiel" is Joel, one of the sons of Jehiel Weed Jr and his 2nd wife Sarah "Sally" Stebbins, who came to the Pulaski NY area from Rupert, Bennington Co, VT, about 1808. Jehiel Jr was a Revolutionary War veteran, and Sally collected a widow's pension.

Jehiel Weed 3rd (son of Ezra & grandson of Jehiel Jr) was born about 1831; married Nancy Davis; resided Ellisburg, Jefferson Co, NY; died in Salisbury NC Confederate prison in 1864.

Where in Canada were Jehiel/Joel and Catherine living? Did they or any of their family return to the States?

Judge Alfred Morton (1836-1896) of Oswego, New York and Sheldon Iowa

We have been looking for years for the ancestors of my husband's gg grandfather, Alfred Morton. Here is what we know so far:

He was born about 1836 in Oswego, New York (or somewhere in New York.)

1860 census shows him living single as a 26 year old lawyer in a hotel (boarding house) in Schroeppel, Oswego, New York (Phoenix post office). (July 11, 1860)

1861 - (13 of November) he married Mary Augusta Moyer, daughter of Abram Moyer (1818-?) and Elvira Chapman(1822-?, both of New York.

1865-1866 -Alfred Morton served in the NY 193rd Volunteer infantry, which served for about 9 months on the Union side. He enlisted as a Major on 29 March 1865 at the age of 32. Commission in on 1 April 1865. Mustered out on 18 Jan 1866 at Harper's Ferry WV. (His father in law, Abram Moyer, was in the same infantry with him.)

His children are
Edith A. Morton (Aug 1866-?)
Alfred M. Morton (Jul 1868 - Sept 1928)
Joe Morton (Jul 1878 - Jan 1920)

After the Civil War he was appointed as a Circuit Judge, according to family history, by Ulysses S. Grant.

About 1878 he moved his family to Sheldon, Iowa, where he continued to practice law until his death on 19 April 1896 (at about the age of 50).

We have searched high and low and have been unable to discern who his parents or siblings were. He is included in several newspaper articles around the time immediately after the Civil War, as well as several books with "bios" of prominent men. For all his "prominence" in that day, we have been unable to find anything about his parentage.

Any leads anyone else has would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Laura Gordon
thelauragordon@gmail.com

He was enrolled in the RTOC Program in Oberlin College. His father, and those before him, spelled their surname Chesebro, but for some reason, he changed his to Chesbro. Seems that he was born in Gilbert Mills or some place like that. I hope to hear from any and all who are researching this particular family.

I am one, but I dont see them hardly mentioned in the Oswego website. My great aunt Anne does gathers alot of info, I am suprised it is not anywhere to be found on this site.
I guess to be to the point, records are lost at my third great grandfather. I want to go beyond him. His name was Simon Gorman, he married Maryanne Hughes, and together they had 8 children.
1.Lillian
2.Edward
3.Harriet
4.James
5.Ella
6.William
7.Mary
8.Catherine

These are not listed by birth. Alfred is my gggreat-grandfather, b. abt. 1803 son of Moses & Anne Kirkpatrick (says his death certficate, but it also has his name as ESTEY). Married Sarah ? and had children: William, Mary, Chas., David K. (my ggreat-grandfather), Sarah, Hannah, James, Joseph & Caroline. I'm wondering if there weren't 2 families, ESTE & ESTEY, in the Constantia/Cleveland area during the 1800's. Charlene has James marrying Minnie Rose in 1913, I have him marrying Minnie Snyder abt. 1891. Charlene also has an Alfred A. Jr. born 1897 to Jas. A. Why is he a Jr.? She also has a Harriet that married a Beebe. I've never found a Harriet.
HELP?

Would some kind person look up a death date for me? ALFRED KELLOGG - he was age 80 on the 1900 census for Mexico district 115, so probably died within the next 10 years. A death record, obit, anything that would give me a death date, would be much appreciated.

He was born in NY, don't know where or who his parents were. Married Mary (Drake?) about 1840... would there be any marriage records that far back? In 1850 Alfred & Mary were living in Redfield Twp, so possibly married in Oswego county.

Thanks for your help.

Does anyone know if there are any lists of those people whose graves were moved from the old Oswego city cemeteries? I have reason to believe that James A. Pinney, Jr. (1804-1852) and his wife Abagail Clark Pinney (1804-1842) were buried in the East side cemetery and according to the information I have, when the schools were built on the East and West sides these cemeteries were moved. The person giving me this information thought this occured during the 1920's or 1930's. Any help would be appreciated.

This is a total longshot, but I am trying to track down the daughter of Harry Ilsley EVANS and Dorothy Keith LOWE. All that I have to go on is that she married a George E. CROWE and was living in Oswego, New York at the time of her father's death in 1965.

Originally from New Brunswick, Canada, she would have been born sometime after 1924. I don't even have a first name for her, as she is only listed as Mrs. George E. CROWE in her father's death notice. Hoping maybe she is still alive, or she has descendants that are, and are researching and come across this. I know, long shot!

Thanks

I am looking for my grandmother's sister, Florence Babcock, she was born 1884 and was living in Syracuse, NY in 1905, working as a domestic. Family gossip has it that she was living in Pennelville when she committed suicide. She was supposed to have married a man named Suiter, and I am not sure of that spelling. Anyone know anything about her? Thankyou, Elizabeth Greene

I know from later censuses their mother was named NANCY FRYER born abt 1796 in NY. The FRYER father probably died in Oswego County but I do know for sure he was born in NY and lived in Oswego County with his wife Nancy. I can't find him on a census.

Thanks so much!
Danielle Thorne

I am looking for any additional information about the Bulger family of Oswego, NY. Father was Patrick and mother was Bridget: they came to the US from Ireland in 1844, had four children: three sons Patrick F., Charles N., and William J.; and a daughter (I only know her first initial "M" and her married name "Hennesey"). The younger Patrick lived, as an adult, in Utica, and was Recorder in that city; Charles went to Fordham University, returned to Oswego, became a state judge and US Commissioner during Prohibition, and ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant-governor in 1904; William was a physician and was elected Mayor of Oswego in 1893. As far as I know neither Charles nor William had children who survived infancy.

Any other info - or where to look - would be appreciated.

Heagerty to Haggerty

I've been trying to find some missing information about Jerry Haggerty (1827 - 1890?) and his family who settle in Oswego 2nd Ward from the 1860 federal census up to 1880.

In doing research on the family, I come across what I believe is a name change from Haggerty to Heagerty for the middle child Dennis (b:1862?) and a widow Catharine Heagerty (1832 - ?). In trying to trace Dennis back from the later federal census (1910 & 1900) into the 1880 federal census, I lose the Heagerty spelling and pick back up the Haggerty spelling.

In the partial listings of 1890, I have several hits for Heagerty at an address of 90 E 10th 1/2 Street. Both Michael and Jeremiah.

Jerry & Catharine arrive around 1853 and make their way to Oswego for the 1860 federal census. Their children in order are Mary (1853 - ?), John (1855 - ?), Daniel (1860 - ?), Dennis (1862 - ?), Thomas (1862 - ?), Catharine (1865 - ?), and Michael (1868 - ?).

I've been spinning my wheel on them for a while now. If any one has any information on this family or who I need to contact to find information. Please let me know, as I would like to get past this wall.
I have information for the youngest son Michael and his lineage - as he is my Great Grandfather.
Thank you for your time in reading this post.

Has anyone tried to get copies of death or burial records from Mt. Adnah Cemetery for a person who was moved from the old cemetery in Volney? History seems to indicate graves may have been moved as many as two times before they settled on the Mt. Adnah burial site.

I'm trying to find information on a relative who was buried in 1850, but the official Oswego web site says they didn't keep records that far back.

When moving bodies from an old cemetery to a new cemetery, how are the actual burial records handled? Where do they go? I'd like to send away for one, but I haven't found an index to tell whether or not I can request it.

I am in the process of composing an e-mail to send to the Friends of History for Fulton for more information on what records might be available, but I was wondering if anyone had experience with this situation before.

Does anyone have any experience trying to get early 1800s records from the Mt. Pleasant/Old Hubbard's Corner M. E. Church?

Many thanks to anyone who can help me with this. If I could find one piece of paper with a birth date or mother's name on it, I would be in heaven.
Mexico, Sandy Creek, Richland and Gates, Smith, Tiffany, Backus, Lewis, Myers, and Parish Families

I had the pleasure of visiting Oswego county in 2005 and realized how much information there is out there about my family. I am stumped on a couple of things, however.

Mexico- I have a Gates child who is reared from maybe age 9 by a Smith family in the town/village of Mexico. I was able to find their gravesites in the Mapleview Cemetery (visit findagrave.com)but do not know how they might connect in to my Gates family. It is Calvin and Dorothy Smith who raise him, and it seems they have one son, Judson. On Calvin and Dorothy's monument are also listed Jesse Smith and his wife Susannah and if I remember correctly Noah Smith and his wife Zilpha. Elisha Gates and his wife Jane are on the last side of the monument. Does anyone have any clues as to how these two families might connect? Anyone know who this Dorothy is? Judson disappears.

Sandy Creek- Theresa Parish is listed as being from Sandy Creek, Oswego. She is the 2nd wife of my 4th great grandfather, would like to connect with anyone who may be able to connect.

Richland/Pulaski/Fernowood (old Holmesville area)- Tiffany, Charles -- anyone researching him? He marries the only son of a local lawyer and is listed in a will. Looking for more info on Cora his daughter and another.

Backus families from the area. Anyone researching? I am looking for parents of Sarah Ann Backus b. 1813 d. 1838 (in childbirth I believe. She may have been born in Herkimer county but dies in Oswego.

HIRAM LEWIS...looking for any information on him. He was a businessman in the area. Had son Hiram L. Lewis.

BF Myers- can anyone tell me more of Bryon F. Myers from the area?

I also connect in to Holmes, Whipple,Richards, Lewis, Doane, Reddy, Tinker, Burch, Heaton, Wood, Willis, Myers and Beebee families from the area.

I am looking for information in regard to John Lansing B.1816. He is buried in Cleveland cemetary and had a son, E.Eugene Lansing also buried in Cleveland. I have found a lot of my Lansing family history but have seem to hit a wall with John. I believe that he married in 1850 and his wife's name was Elizabeth, but I do not yet have a maiden name for her. Any information that you can help provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

They were possibly married in Oswego. An actual article would be wonderful, but a simple confirmation is all that is needed.
Anna Michaels b abt 1899 New York State (?)

Hi, i am writing in regards to a possible common lineage between our MICHAELS ancestors. I am researching Anna E MICHAELS b abt 1899 d unknown. She would be my maternal ggrandmother. I believe Anna married Homer W KING 24 April 1916 and they had 3 children Helen, Homer, and living female (name protected) KING. Anna is listed in both the 1920 and 1930 cenus records with her husband Homer.
Anna and Homer were divorced (unknown date) and she remarried Cecil PARKS and by verbal account moved to Florida whee she died (?). If you have any information on my Anna prior to 1920, I would greatly appreciate your insight.
I found a May F. Michaels 57 yrs old in the 1930 census who appears to be living with Anna's brother-in-law, Roland King b 1894 d 1969, and what looks to be his 4 children.

She was very active in the educational system I have found many articles a www.fultonhistory.com regarding Ruth and her husband Olin. I have one picture of her from her New Berlin NY High School group photo. (below) If anyone has any other photos or knows of any other information they can share about Ruth, I would appreciate it.
In search of information regarding Simon C Williams

I have recently discovered that my paternal great-grandmother, Mabel Lura Warner McCune's, great-grandfather was Simon C Williams of Oswego and Jefferson counties. He enlisted in the 24th infantry (NY) in September of 1861, and died of disease in January of 1862. The family was split up and Mabel's grandmother grew up in Chatauqua County with an aunt, Prudence Cummings (ins)Bryant. She had a younger sister born in May of 1862 who became Harriett Huffstater. Simon C's wife's name was Mary Jane Upton. Thanks for any leads in advance.

I am looking for any evidence of John Wesley Benton's birth in Oswego Co. NY, around 1836 or 1837. His Father was John W. Benton and mother Welthy Widgar (open to variations on this unusual name). His mother is said to have remained in NY while he and his father moved to Pennsylvania in 1836-1840, after which John W. Benton is said to have died, about 1840. John went to live with grandparents, and ended up in Wisconsin in 1861 and enlisted in the Co. C 14th Wisc. Infantry.

Source: Meeker Co. Their son is Lewis Franklin Hayes, his wife Caroline Betsy Dennis. Lewis was born in Oswego Co. in 1836 and died in Michigan in 1899. He married Caroline Nov. 24 1856 in NY. Lewis shows up on the 1860 Census in the Village of Hastings (post office Central Square) Oswego Co. with his family. I have not been able to find any record for Daniel or Ada. Holmes who married my great grandfather, John P. Knowlton. According to the obituary of my great-grandmother, she moved with her parents from Fernwood to Stillwater, Michigan when she was very small. When she was a teen, Newton and Marildah died and she came to Oswego to work and live with her aunt, Catherine Thompson. I have info on the Bumpus family but am really stuck on Newton Holmes.

GIBSON/WHITE/VANDENMAKER

I am looking for Jacob GIBSON born aprox 1800-1810 in New York. The genealogy done by my great grandmother shows the following: That Jacob Gibson above was married to Elizabeth WHITE (b.1808 in Hook Green, Samberhurst England and died 1884). This family record shows that Elizabeth White's father was John VANDENMAKER and mother was Harriet ? Obviously, the different last name (White) would imply a marriage to someone named WHITE or that perhaps VANDNMAKER was an adoptive father. Jacob GIBSBON & Elizabeth WHITE (?)'s son Emory Menzo GIBSON was my gggrandfather and I have fairly extensive documentation on him. He was born 25 Jan 1846 in Hekimer, Herkimer NY and died 5 Nov 1933 in Price, Carbon, Utah. He was married to Lydia Henrietta Buss in Ogle IL in 1880. In tracing "back" from him, I found that he (and at least his most of his siblings were residing in South Grove, Dekalb, IL by 1860 and I believe that his mother Elizabeth was also there. Most all of Emory Menzo GIBSON's older siblings were born in Cooperstown, Oswego, NY. (ie Martha Ann b.1832,Lavinia b.1836, Harriet b.1838 and Austin b. 1843- the one exception in Chauncey White Gibson b. 1833 in Herkimer NY).

If anyone has any of these people in their line please contact me at lkf46@hotmail.com as this has been a brick wall for me.

Thanks,
Lucia Finley
lkf46@hotmail.com
