Surnames: Becraft Becroft Weldon Whittaker Tompkins Bennett Donahue Bird Neron
I am looking for information on the family of Seth BECRAFT (1796-1840) and Clarinda WELDON (1802-1872). Seth was mentioned in the history of Troy as a firefighter in 1838 and then he died in 1840. They lived in Nassau in the 1830 Census. Seth and his father, Abraham BECRAFT, are interred at Mt Ida Cemetery. Clarinda moved to NYC right after his death and they were thereafter known as BECROFT, including in the 1840 census in NYC. Clarinda's maiden name might be TOMPKINS and WELDON could be a first marriage name and their first son, Theodore William BECRAFT is possibly from a WELDON marriage. He died and was listed in the crew as Theodore WELDON on the USS Bainbridge in 1863.

Seth and Clarinda were married on Feb 2, 1822, in the Reformed Church of Claverack. In addition to Theodore, Seth and Clarinda had the following children:

Sarah (2/21/1825-1/18/1827)
James Henry (12/27/1827-11/22/1898) married Mary Jane WHITTAKER in 1851, probably in NYC (This is my lineage to prove)
Martha M (12/6/1829-6/16/1881) married Benjamin BENNETT
Julia Francis (8/16/1834-8/13/1836)
Elizabeth Rebecca (9/16/1832-?) married John DONAHUE abt 1850, and possibly ?? BIRD and Louis NERON thereafter.

Clarinda is interred in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn with Martha and her family. Descendants of James Henry BECROFT are also there though the family moved and settled in Meriden and Wallingford, CT ultimately.

My challenge is to find any documentation tying these children to Seth and Clarinda, specifically James Henry. I am trying to document my lineage for entry into the DAR and I can't find documentation for Troy area baptisms or Seth's death other than his interment. Marriage certs in 1851 did not include parent info in NYC as far as I can tell so even if I found James and Mary Jane's marriage, it may not help. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can look around Troy for Baptism info? Thanks in advance! Judi
