I'm wondering if anyone can address the reliability of books like George Baker Anderson's "Landmarks of Rensselaer County"? Where did the information for this book come from? Specifically, I'm interested in how the information for individuals' biographies was acquired. Did the people who were profiled supply the information themselves? Was it checked for accuracy at all? My problem is that I can't confirm that the father of one of those profiled actually served in the civil war or died at Gettysburg as is mentioned in the biography. I just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on the reliability of these types of county histories?
