CJ - you may already have but here goes: US Census 1870 Providence, RI shows Stephen Beckwith age 45, a silversmith born in Scot. & his wife Margaret (38) born in NY, and their children: Edward (15) born Mass.; Frederick W 10, Emma 6, & Mary M 3, all these 3 born RI - also at that address was Mary Beckwith age 27, a dressmaker who reported she too was born in Scot.; John Anderson 19, born Scot. who reported he was an apprentice blacksmith - - ALSO US Census 1910 Providence,RI: Steven Beckwith (85) born Scot & his wife EMMA age 69 who reported she was born in Eng. They reported having been married 34 yrs & had no children -Stephen reported he came to USA in 1844 & Emma in 1866 - Ergo, Margaret must have died somewhere between the 1870 Census year and 1876 (the appx 2nd marriage date of Stephen to Emma -the 1910 Census minus the 34 yrs of marriage Stephen and Emma reported) -the 1910 Census also showed that the Beckwiths "had own income" entered in the employment column - apparently Stephen & his first wife Margaret lived in Mass. for a while as their son Edward was born there as shown in the 1870 US Census - hope this helps, Resp GJM
