Pieces of history found in my yard in Reynoldsville

Im just hoping the right person will read this and give a clue as where to look for info on this subject, After studying an 1850s-60s map of my area I decided to do some metal detecting around my yard to see what could be discovered. On 6/24/08 after searching my front yard, about 8-10 inches down I discovered a Large Cent dated 1820, I kinda figured it was something a boy had obtained through an older relative and lost, further investigations led me to believe this was not the case. On the 5th of July 1 more item of history was then discovered, about 3 inches down in the back yard I retrieved another Large Cent dated 1812. Also made quite a discovery on the 4th of July one day prior to finding the 2nd Large Cent. A US union belt buckle plate from A civil war Union soldiers uniform. Now as far as I know, this house was built about 1900, but it has a stone foundation leading me to believe a prior structure was either removed or or dismantled leaving the foundation to be used for the current house. The map Ive been researching off of does show a structure and name. My neighbor states that his house was built about 1877 leaving me with many unanswered questions as to why Large cents dating to 50 years prior would be found in this area. My only deduction is they must have been in circulation for a while. So if anyone out there can give me a heads up on these, and also the union plate i found please let me know.
thanks
Douglas Mockler

Robert P. Rogers 1822 - 1912

From an undated and unidentified newspaper clipping given to my by my grandmother. I suspect it is from 1912 and the "Watkins Express" based on information in the obituary.

Robert Rogers

Robert Rogers, one of Burdett's oldest and most respected citizens, died last Friday, after a long illness, at the home of his daughter, Miss Adelia Rogers.

Mr. Rogers was born February 28, 1822, in the town of Covert, but the most of his life was passed in the town of Hector. On September 19, 1847, he was married to Elizabeth C. Rogers. Mr. and Mrs. Rogers had four children: Emma Elizabeth Beardslee, Olive Louise Rogers, who died in 1863, Jay Woodruff Rogers, and Adela[sic]Rogers. The deceased was the youngest and last of the family of Henry and Phoebe De Long Rogers.

Mr. Rogers was a veteran of the Civil War having served nearly three years in the 50th New York Volunteers. His record of bravery as a soldier is well known, and in his capacity as constable and deputy sheriff, which position he has held the most of the time since the civil War, his utter fearlessness and courage in all emergencies proclaimed the soldierly qualities of his character. Mr. Rogers' interest in public affars[sic] continued to the end; his daily papers were read to him to the very last day. He had been a constant subscriber tothe Watkins Wxpress since the Civil War.

Mr. Rogers was tenderly cared for by his daughter Adelia, with whom he had made his home since the death of his wife in 1897, and everything was done to make his last days comfortable and cheery.

He is survived three children, eight grandchildren, and seventeen great grandchildren. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Mr. Van Wie, in the Presbyterian Church of that village on Sunday, August 4th, and interment in the Hector Union burial grounds. D.W. Washburn Post G.A.R., of which he was a member, conducting the ceremony. Twelve members of the order from this village were in attendance.

Robert was my 3rd great grandfather.

yeah, it would really be nice to see some of the old one room school house info on this site, seems as though there were allot of them around the area of burdett, hector, and other surrounding areas. do any photos exist? info on dates they were built? what ones are private homes?, how many kids went to each one? I found one map from 1866 by Bill Hecht on the Thompkins site but that was it. I really find that info quite interesting to read when i visit the other county sites, but there seems to be no trace of it on the Schyler site.

looking for more info on Mrs. James Morehead (maiden name: Marinda Davenport). She died January 24, 1875, was the daughter of Henry & Julia DENSE DAVENPORT, she actually died in Starkey, Yates County, New York where her parents lived. Her obit says she had 3 children; she died as a result of childbirth complications. I am only aware of her oldest son, Clarence, who was adopted by the WALLING family in Starkey. Maybe she had twins?? Her husband left the oldest son with the Wallings and seems to have disappeared. Census records say he was from Pennsylvania.

Why would her obit be in Schuyler County unless she had extended family there or maybe her husband did??? I find other DAVENPORTS in Schuyler but no MOREHEADS.

Anybody doing research on these families?

How can I get a copy of the Schuyler County newspaper listing?

Thanks. John and wife Sally are buried in Dix, NY in a little overgrown cemetery. His sons were Wilson and Willard for sure but he had more sons. He owned quite a bit of land and was a sheep rancher.I am looking for 1.)Where John came from in Connecticut 2.) What Sally's maiden name was--it may have been Bump. Thanks!
Lorenzo Gilbert and Rosetta McIntyre, town of Hector, NY, family info

I am not a descendant of Lorenzo Gilbert and Rosetta McIntyre. (I am connected to Rosetta through her step-mother Julia Owen, the sister of my g-g-g grandmother Betsey Owen Stevenson). I have no further info on them. I have assembled the following -- with the help of a Dudley descendant.

Lorenzo Dudley Gilbert (parents Justus Gilbert and Sarah "Sally" Dudley) was born 1811 in New York. (Probably died in Ohio between 1870 and 1880.)

Per another researcher, his mother Sarah Dudley was married three times:
- Sarah Dudley married first Ichabod Andrews and had a son Ichabod Andrews Jr. born in October 1807. (In December 1808 Sarah’s second husband Justus Gilbert was appointed guardian of Ichabod by Cayuga co., NY, surrogate; Sarah petitioned in 1814 to have this changed because Justus had left in January 1812 and joined the U.S. Army for five years and he was spending the estate meant for the minor’s care.)
- Sarah Dudley married second Justus Gilbert and had Lorenzo Gilbert and Eliza Gilbert. (Eliza died 17 Apr 1883 is buried in the Mecklenberg Cemetery, Schuyler Co., NY, with her husband Orange Kilborn (d. 23 Oct 1871, 54 yrs). According to another researcher, Eliza’s half-sister Harriet Dudley Goldsmith Kilborn is buried in the same cemetery.)
- Sarah Dudley married third a ____ Goldsmith, with whom she had Harriet Dudley Goldsmith who married a Kilborn.

Lorenzo’s mother, Sarah Dudley Andrews Gilbert Goldsmith was buried in the Ithaca City cemetery with her son Ichabod as Sally Andrews.

Lorenzo Gilbert married Rosetta McIntyre. Rosetta (parents Reuben McIntyre and Emilia Barker) was born 1814 in New York – probably in town of Hector, now Schuyler Co. Rosetta died 17 Sep 1888 in Fremont, Sandusky co, Ohio. Obituary per another researcher said Rosetta died at home of son-in-law, John Garver, where she had lived for ten years; her remains were taken to Homersville in Medina Co., Ohio.

Lorenzo Gilbert was a shoemaker in 1860 census in Hector, Schuyler Co., NY, and 1870 in Homer, Medina Co., Ohio.

In the 1880 census in Sandusky, Ohio, Rosetta Gilbert is shown as a widow and a servant and a border at age 66. Another member of the same household is Adam Gilbert, age 68, born in Vermont and both of his parents were born in Vermont. Adam possibly may have been a cousin of Lorenzo's.

Lorenzo Gilbert and Rosetta McIntyre had the following children:
1. Mary / Marriet Gilbert was born 1837 in New York.

Social Security says Clarence C. Chrisman of Montour Falls died 5 Feb 2007. I have been unable to locate an obituary online. Would some kind soul be able to look this up for me? I believe he sometimes went by his middle name, Cecil. If this is the correct man, he was my great-uncle whom I didn't even know was still living. He would have been about 91 when he died. Thank you.

I am trying to find the marriage and death of Samuel Harpending (b. circa 1800-1813, d. circa 1836-1849, of Tyrone in 1840. he apparently was of Hornby in 1830. so I assume he may have m. in Hornby, and d. in Tyrone. I've asked for help on the Steuben board but haven't had much assistance there. I can't do the research myself, I'm in Oregon.
I don't know Samuel's wife's name. I thought I did, but I was wrong.

Seeking ancestors and descendants of John Foote (1757 - 1817) and his wife Catherine Miller (died 1837) both buried in Odessa, Schuyler County, NY. John Foote was an impressed British sailor during the American Revolution and later joined the American forces. He was in New York City in 1790 and settled in Genoa, Cayuga County, NY about 1800. He moved to the town of Catherine, Schuyler County, NY about 1810. He died in Odessa, NY in 1817 and I believe he is buried in Laurel Cemetary. I have eight recorded children.
They are John (b. 1784), Phillip (b. 1786), Daniel (b. 1788), Adam (b. 1790), Catherine (b. 1792), Esther (b. 1794), Elizabeth (b. 1798) and Susan (b. 1801). The three oldest sons, John, Phillip and Daniel all married Jansen girls from Genoa, NY daughters of Chris Jansen. Adam Foote married Esther Lane. She was born abt. 1804 and died abt 1873 buried in Odessa, Town of Catherine, Schuyler County, NY. I am searching for any information that may be available on this Lane family. Adam and Esther (Lane) Foote's oldest child Livingstone Foote was born about 1824.
It appears that Adam Foot and Esther Lane may have been married in the town of Catherine sometime around 1823.

There was another child according to the 1900 census, whose name I do not have. These folks lived in Hector, Schuyler Co., N.Y. on the 1880, 1900 and 1910 census. Can anyone connect to this family and perhaps share information? I'd like to know when they died and where they are buried as well as general family information. I am related to the Cogswells. Thank you.

I am looking for additional information on the following people and would also like to contact their children, if living, or other descendents. Harry and my father, Edward Milton Jenkins were first cousins.

Harry Ralph Hoover (1894-1979) and his wife Bertha UNKNOWN (1892-1975) and their children Robert (“Bob”) and Jane.

Harry was born in Watkins Glen, Schuyler County, New York and appears (SSDI) to have died in Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, Florida. I do have information on Harry’s ancestors, but have no information as to if and who the children married or where they settled.

Bertha’s maiden name is unknown as is her birthplace. She appears to have died (SSDI) in Hollywood, Broward County, Florida. I would love to know her maiden name and origins.

The 1920 and 1930 Fed. Census show the family living in Ithaca, Tompkins County, New York.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hello!
I am looking for any information on my ancestor Joseph Terry and his wife Sarah Terry. They came to Tompkins County around 1869 from Cambrideshire, England. I am basically looking for any cemetery records for either of them I checked both Tompkins and Schuyler Counties. From the time they arrived in the US until the 1880 census they seem to be residing in Ulysses, Tompkins County. By the 1900 census Joseph Taylor is a boarder in Hector, Schuyler and in the 1910 census Joseph is seen living with his son Joseph Taylor Jr. in Hector, Schuyler County. I can't find any cemetery record for where he and his wife could be buried....HELP! Also I am looking for any descendants of their children: Joseph Taylor Jr., Fanny Taylor, Samuel Taylor, Sarah Taylor, Charlotte Taylor, Alice Taylor, and Lizzie Taylor. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!

Emily Cole

Back in 1934 I lived in Watkins Glen I need to know the name of the road I lived on. I was only 4 at the time but I remember I lived in a duplex house next door to a lady that had a dog kennel. and up the road was a little red one room school. We would walk down the road and turn to the right (if memory serves me right) to town when there were only cobblestone streets. There was a barber shop complete with the red and white pole out front and a tobacco store with a wooden indian out front. Later we moved across the road to a big house that was up on top of a hill, It may have been a mountain, I was only 4. it was hard getting up there because of all the brush on both sides of the dirt road. I know I've probably gone off here, I apologize for that but if there is anyone as old as I am that this sounds at all familiar to Please email me. Thank you in advance.
Nadine Rieman
I am researching the following surnames from Schuyler County: Hyer, Wilber, Brown, and Hurd.
The Hyer family started out in Pennsylvania > Cortland, Simmpronius, Etna area > Schuyler County where most of us now live. My grandfather, born Francis Eck to Susie Electa Auten Eck, of Ovid, NY and father unknown, was adopted at birth in 1924 by the Earl and Mabel Hyer. After adopting my grandfather in 1924, Earl and Mabel re-named him Gerald F. Hyer.
The Wilber family also originated in Pennsylvania where some are still living today. Some later moved to Elmira NY, and on to Schuyler County. My grandpa, Eugene Raleigh Wilber was one of them that came to Schuyler County. He met and married Marguerite Calla Brown, from Rock Stream, NY. Marguerites parents were Frank and Calla Marguerite (Hurd) Brown.
Looking for any information or descendents of ANDREW and NANCY ARCHIBALD, in Schuyler Co. by 1820. ANDREW was from Scotland, NANCY from Connecticut (don't know maiden name). One of their sons (LYMAN) was my G-G-G Grandfather.

I believe they were in Cayuta. They changed from Schuyler to Thompkins County (probably without moving), and their grandson ANDREW (son of WALTER and FANNY) apprently enlisted in the Union Army from Cayuta. He died at Lookout Mountain Tennessee.
WALTER's wife FANNY, may have been a HALL. A mother-in-law is listed on the 1855 census with them named Hannah Hall (from Connecticut)./

I am tracing my Hunter line in Schuyler Cty. Robert Harry Hunter b. 5/3/1876 in Milo, Yates NY was the son of William H. Hunter b. 1853 in NY and Emma McElheney b. 1854 in NY. William's father, I think, was John Hunter b. 1815 in Scotland.

Emma's parents were Theodore McElheney b. 1808 in NY and Eliza Churchill (I think it is Churchill) b. 1818 in NY. The Burdett Baptist Church Cemetery listing has Eliza McElleney with those dates and Theodore McElleney who died 3/23/1825 at the age of 66, which would make his birth year 1759. Could he have been the father of the Theodore who married Eliza? Theo and Eliza produced four children born 1843 to 1854 - clearly not the children of the Theodore who was born in 1759.

Does anyone have any information on the marriage, death, or burial of the Hunters of Burdett?

Would anyone be able to go to the cemetery and takes a picture of their graves? I will compensate for this. I was there and took a picture myself many years ago but am unable to find it. I live in Florida now. I would greatly appreciate anyone who could do this. Oscar Barker B. 1868 d. 1949, Anna Barker, b. 1871, d. 1960 (or 1961.) I would love to have the exact date of her death: month, day and year. I believe she was the widow of Harry MANDER, born London England in 1893, and died in NJ in 1965. Harry MANDER was my granddad George COOPER's first cousin. I believe Harry and Catherine are buried in St. Joseph's Church cemetery, Tom's RIver, NJ. Harry was the son of Harry Shemeld MANDER and Eliza CLARK MANDER of London, England.
