You may obtain a copy of his death certificate locally, but it would be on file in the town/city where he died. For example, if he died in a hospital, it probably would have been in Bath, NY, so the City Clerk's Office would have it. If he died in Prattsburgh, the Town Clerk would have it. Turn around time should be quick. especially if you month/day he passed away. Did he own property? You can check at the Steuben County County Clerk's Office, which will show who he bought property from, where it was located, who it was sold to etc. You should also check the Steuben County Surrogate Court to see if his estate was probated, ie Will, Letter's of Administration (this can be great source for info.) You can check Ancestry.com for WW II records. Hope this helps.
