Request for guardianship search

Hi. My late husband's great grandfather was John Wheeler b. 16 Aug 1820 in Bath, Steuben County, NY. We have reason to think he may not have been born a Wheeler (or Wheelor or Willour). I will be happy to pay a reasonable fee to anyone who would be willing to search for a possible Guardianship file in the County Courthouse that might show a boy being taken in by a Wheeler/Wheelor/Willour family and, perhaps, assuming that family name. What I hope to learn, of course, is his birth name and anything that might provide further clues to his origins, if possible.

I know that the town of Wheeler was formed from parts of Bath and Prattsburgh on 25 Feb 1820 and that he lived in Ischua in 1829. He was married in Cuba, Allegany County on 28 Feb 1842. Helived in New Hudson after his second marriage if not before. He is buried in Black Creek Cemetery in Cuba.

Looking to find information or obits for George Herbert Challingsworth (1 Feb 1875 - 1935) and his wife, Elizabeth (1881-1925). They are buried in the Coopers Plains Cemetery along with CHALLINGSWORTH, Stanley M. Jr. , Born 1932 , Died 1934 (unknown relation). George was the son of John Edward Challingsworth and Elizabeth Walker of England. They came to America and settled in PA. George ended up in NY somehow. Any help or information is appreciated! I am searching for additional information about Elwyn and Florence Clark Green. 1930 Census establishes birthdates as 1896 for Elwyn W. and 1902 for Florence L. Florence was a daughter of Walter and Minnie Riley Clark of Pulteney, Steuben, NY. Social Security Death Index lists a Florence Green, b 27 Apr 1902, d Feb 1985, Corning, Steuben, NY. But not sure if this is the right Florence. Obituary may glean conclusive facts.

OTTO EGGER was a corrections officer and moved from various locations within the New York State prison system. In 1959 the couple moved to Dannemora NY where Otto took a job as a corrections officer. They had a least one son named ROBERT EGGER born about 1920 - he lived at one time in Atlanta, Georgia. Rosemary was one of 11 children of MICHAEL O'NEIL and GRACE UPDIKE of Seneca County, NY. I would be interested in sharing information on the family of Lyman Horton (~1817-1866) who lived in Howard, Steube County, New York.

His wife was Cordelia Brasted (~1822-1883) and his children were:

Herbert (b.~1843), Martin (b.~1848), Julia (b.~1854) and John T. (b.1857).

John T. Horton was a doctor who married Irene Lewis and had children Ralph and Lyman.

My Great Grandfather, Joseph Snay (Sney, Senet) married Abigail Archy (Archie, Atcher, and other varients found) in 1869. Abigail was born, by our records, in Steuben County, NY. Daughter of Jerimiah Archy and Orphean or Orpha Ann is some places. Jerimiah served in the war.They lived their married lives in Michigan. were there two Samuel Harpendings, and if so, who were their spouses and children? do I have the right children? which one is the son of Peter and Mehitable, and what is her maiden name?
I've seen Peter's obit extract, his and Mehitable's burial, but can't find much else. Samuel died before Peter. Samuel died between 1836 and 1840, in CT or OH.

Avery Families of Steuben County, New York early 1800's

Does anyone have historical information on the Avery's from the early part of the 1800's. I believe my ancestor, Ebenezer Avery b 1779 MA was in Steuben Co, NY at the time of the 1830 census. It is mentioned in a book on Butler County, Kansas. I am wondering if any documents or family information survives from that time period. Trying to find out which branch our Ebenezer Avery belongs to, but believe we are from the Groton Avery's but need to prove it.

Brooks Family From Woodhull, Steuben, NY

James Brooks came from England and served in the Revolutionary War. He originally settled in Berks County, PA. After the war, he relocated to either Orange or Sullivan County, NY. He had a son, William Rensselaer Brooks (b. 1824, in either Orange or Sullivan County, NY), who married Jane Simmons from Richford, NY.

Jane was the daugher of John and Louisa (Haskins) Simmons, also from the Richford, NY area.

William and Jane lived in Caroline, NY, which is not far from Richford. They lived in Owego, Tioga, NY for a short period of time, eventually relocating to Hornellsville, Steuben, NY. William entered the Civil War, dying near Baton Rouge, LA.

I have lots of information to share regading the union of William R. Brooks and Jane Simmons Brooks.

In 1925, Florence Brooks gave birth to the child of a Mr. Benjamin in Woodhull, Steuben County, NY. The child's name was Shirley. Not sure what last name was used.

Florence moved to Owego, NY between 1925-1930. Her name is on the census for 1930, but not the child.

Would appreciate any information regarding what happended to Shirley.

William H Rockefeller in Bath circa 1850's

I found a newsclipping sent to my father from my grandmother. It says that "our uncle John Rockefeller's father, William Henry Rockefeller, was a builder, who died in an old soldier's home in Bath, NY."

The family later moved to Oswego County but I wonder if there is anyway I can find where the old soldier's home in Bath is/was. I cannot find any other information on William H Rockefeller. His children were born in the 1840's and I'm guessing he died in the 1850's.

Keziah is listed in the Birth, Marriage and Death and Vital Records of Western New York {reference number 3859} 1809 to 1850. It states she was the widow of Daniel who was a Rev War soldier and she died 8/11/49. I understand that 8/11/49 was her DOD but what do the other numbers "{2-8/15}" mean? Was Daniel a sargent? That line is difficult to read on my computer. She is also listed as recieving a pension beginning in 1836.Does that mean 1836 was the approx date of Daniel's death? Does anyone have any more info on Daniel and Keziah? I suspect them to have been my gggg grandparents but need confirmation of children and possibly grandchildren.

Would like any information on Will's family. This is all I know about him--
Married on 22 November 1911-to Myrtie Ann Sanford-Born: 14 May 1890 Died: 21 February 1967-77yrs.(daughter of LaVerne C. Sanford & Frances L. Higgins)
William Platt Marvin-Born: 29 March 1891 Died: 16 April 1965-75yrs. They are buried in the Arkport cemetery.
I know they raised two nieces-Ortha & Phyllis Kellogg and a foster son, George Meyers of Arkport and that Will was engaged in farming until 1943 when he came to Hornell and worked as a carpenter for 20 years and then as night watchman for the DeWitt Silk Mill. I would love to find anything about Will's family.I know there were many Marvin families in the area but I just cannot find out who his parents were. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Cornelius Carroll in 1880 Census - Hornellsville - age 78

I am hitting brick walls with my Carroll family in Ireland and would love to find someone in the US who is connected to the same extended family. In the Census, enumerated after Cornelius was Edmond, 25, brakeman with a son Emmet, age 5, and a son Daniel, age 3. His sister Ellen, 37, was keeping house. These names indicate a strong possibility that this is part of my extended family from Co. Cork. I received the death certificate for my great-great-grandfather, William C. Turner and discovered that he is buried at Greenwood in New York. He died on 9/21/1904. A burial inquiry confirms that William C. Turner was buried on 9/22/1904 in lot 20118, section 6. I would be very grateful if someone happens to visit Greenwood and could see if a headstone is present and if possible take a picture.

Trying to find parents or anything about Jerred Sanford, Born:1810-he was married to Rebecca (Vanderbeek) Sanford from Cayuga Co NY-they had seven children. He was last mentioned in the 1840 census Burns, NY Allegany county, in the 1850 cenus, his wife is widow with 7 children, no idea where he died, when, or about his family or where he came from. I know he & Rebecca are mentioned in her father's will (Benjamin Vanderbeek) of Cayuga County and Jerred & Rebecca were living in Livingston Co.NY at that time as their oldest son, Peter was born near Mt. Frank Siwek b. abt. 1880 in Poland. Frank immigrated to the U.S. about 1920 leaving his wife, Wiktoria and three children in Poland. Frank returned to Poland for a brief visit; returned to the U.S. again leaving his family in Poland.

Frank Siwek died 11 April 1947 and is buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery (Lot 24) in Prattsburgh, NY. A "certificate" or document, required to transfer Frank's property (house/land) was sent to Wiktoria, but through the years much has been lost and forgotten.

Frank's grandchildren (living in Europe) want to learn more about their grandfather and his life in the U.S., but have been unable to find records. It takes months to get a copy of the death certificate from the state of NY and they have not been able to learn if Frank was a parishioner of St. Patrick's Church.

How can the family find a copy of his death, land records, some information? A city directory? World War II 1942 draft registration card?

Can anyone lookup a death certificate for LYDIA NEWMAN who died 13 June 1883 in Wayland, Steuben Co., NY. She is buried in the Old Wayland Cemetery and this date of death is on her headstone. She was born 02 Aug 1823.

If you are not able to look this up then could someone let me know if the Death Certs would be located in Wayland?

Also, what is the year that Vital Records began being recorded?

Seeking information about descendants and ancestry of Jane SKIff and Charles HAY/HAYS/HAYES, who lived in Reading Township, Steuben County, 1830-at least 1860. Jane SKIFF's father is thought to be James SKIFF. According to the 1855 census for the Town of Orange, Schuyler Co., she was born in Washington County about 1794.

Charles HAY was born about 1782 to Sarah Mary TERRIL and Ephraim HAY of Bridgewater Township, Somerset Co., NJ. He married Jane SKIFF about 1822, location unknown. Three children are known; there may have been others.

Mary HAYS, born about 1224, married Anderson WEBBER about 1845. Their children were Michael M, Cornelius T., Algernon S., and Anderson A. Webber Jr. Michael married Sarah E. unknown. They are listed in the Yates County census of 1865. Cornelius T married Helen unknown. They and two children, Freddie and Myrtle are listed in the 1875 Starkey, Yates County census.

Phebe Ann HAYS, born about 1826 in Tompkins Co., married John C. Osterhout. Their children include Adam Alexander who died October 7, 1902, in Willard State Hospital; Jonah, who married Emma Swarthout; Mary E.; Nancy M.; William B. who married Estella May unknown and had six children, Ransom William, William, Howard Clifford, Vernon, Estella May, and Gertrude; Elizabeth J; and Cornelius.

My gg grandfather James SKIFF HAYS, born 1831 in Watkins Glenn, married Harriet Jane KELLY, an orphan, about 1851. Their first daughter, Mary Ellen HAYS, was born in NY. James and Harriet and Mary Ellen then migrated to PA where six other children were born: Estella Mariana, who married William T. Small; Harriet Jane who married first William David Grant; Charles Legrande, who died young; my g grandfather Grant Lowell, who married Annette Dexter; James Mott, who married Fannie Lightfoot; Thane Lamont, who died young; and Morris.

Born in Susquehanna county, Pa., Jan. 11, 1832, was a son of Rufus and Polly (GREEN) AUSTIN, long ago deceased. Samantha A. HOWE, who became his wife May 23, 1851 in West Union, N.Y., was born there Aug. 21, 1835; her father, Lemuel HOWE, is deceased, but her mother whose maiden name was Permelia HAUBER, still survives. By this marriage there were twelve children, their births occurring in the order named: Mary J., Adelbert A., Nancy V., Chancy A., Fred C., Ida D., Anna P., George W., William., May, Phoeba E. and David W. Comrade AUSTIN was 32 years old and his occupation was that of a farmer when he enlisted Sept. 10, 1864, as a private, joining Co. H, 141st N.Y.V.I., 2d Brig., 1st Div., 20th A.C. In December, 1864 he was forced to seek hospital rest and care at Savannah, Ga., and Davids Island till June, 1865, suffering with chronic diarrhea. When able, he was furloughed for thirty days from hospital and was honorably dischared June, 1865 at Elmira, N.Y. he took part with Sherman on his March to the Sea. His father was a soldier in the War of 1812 and his wife's grandfather, Frederick HAUBER, also served in the same war. Our subject's brother, Alonzo who served in N.Y. Regt. (pg. 1184) and Rufus who was killed in action, were in the army. Two half-brothers of his wife, Alfred and Etzel BURGHER, served in the war. Comrade Austin belongs to Sawyer Post, 333, he is a farmer by occupation and his address is Wileysville, N.Y.

I was looking for the LDS microfilm of St. Patrick's Church Mt. Morris, Livingston County and found it. However, the LDS "Notes" of St. Pat's shows: "Microfilm of original records at St. Joseph's Rectory, Wayland, N. Y". It has marriages from 1834-1909. I'm looking for a marriage around 1852-1853 that we thought could have occurred at St. Pat's in Mt. Morris.

Does anyone have a clue as to why the records of St. Patrick's Church (Mt. Morris)would be at the rectory of St. Joseph's in Wayland? I'm so confused!!!

Looking for any information on my Grandmother nee Lulu Lillian Clark, daughter of Timothy W and Georgianne Clark. 1900 US Census shows that my Grandmother also had an older sister Florence. Lillian married Andrew E.H. Arnzten in 1912 and had two children, Gertrude and Ruth E (my mother. According to my grandfathers WWI militrary draft record (1917-1918) he lived in Brooklyn and listed Lillian's address at RFD 3, Bath, Steuben, NY.

Lulu's mother passed away in 1903; her father Timothy W Clark remarried and had four children from second marriage. Louisa, Charles, Lester and Helen.

My grandfather and Lillian apparently separted sometime in 1920. Ruth remainded with Andrew. We assume Gertrude remained with Lillian however we cannot locate or find any records of Lulu (Lillian) beyond 1918. We cannot locate any record of my mother's sister Gertrude or whether there may be any further descendants of either. An added note: Andrew never divorced Lillian (Lulu).

If anyone has any information on this family other than what I have already been able to trace through Ancestry, I would appreciate if you would please contact me. Thank you.

Andrew and Squire Noles

Seeking any authentic information that my great grandfather,
Andrew Noles 1823-1872 of Thurston and Squire Noles
1809-1897 were brothers. Both men and their families lived
in the Town of Thurston area both coming from Otsego Co. NY.
I have information that perhaps their father was Jacob
Noles but nothing reliable. I have accumulated much information on the succeeding generations of both families.

Does anyone know why William H Abbott, son of Adam Abbott and Lydia Van Norman, use his brother's name ( John William Abbott ) when getting a marriage license with Lucy Ann E Morse in Wisconsin ? Both William and John were born in Steuben County New York.

All records have John's wife as a Sarah E Rand, and various census records reflect Sarah and John together while William is shown with Lucy Ann. I have the marriage certificate issued October 6, 1869 in Berlin, Green Lake Wisconsin

MARY ANN SCHOONOVER b. 1823 in PA m. CHARLES E. CARD of Troupsburg, She died there in 1889. Charles Edward Card son of Rev. Charles and Phebe GARDNER CARD early settlers of Steuben Co., NY.

SALLY JANE SCHOONOVER b. 31 Mar 1825, Steuben Co., New York m. George CUMMINGS. He was the son of Thomas and Lodema BLANCHARD CUMMINGS of Troupsburg NY and Westfield, PA. Sally Jane died 28 Nov 1889 in Austinburg.

I am looking for information about my great-great-great grandfather Henry Persons. This is what I know: Henry Persons was from Connecticut and settled in Hornby NY between 1830 and 1840. His wife was Eliza (maiden name unknown). He had 6 children- 3 sons,William,Levi and Nathaniel and 3 daughters, Hulda, Sarah Jane and Harriet.Around 1850, Eliza left Henry and moved to Ohio with a man named David B. Coryell who was their next door neighbor and a Baptist minister. She took William and Harriet. Henry died in 1852, leaving his land in Hornby to his two remaining sons and Sarah Jane, my great-great grandmother. His farm was located in a state forest near Westhill cemetery. I would like to know 1.) where in Connecticut Henry Persons was from 2.) what Eliza's maiden name was. Thank you! I would appreciate any and all information!

Married first SOUTHWELL, married second J.L. NIVISON/NIVERSON. Survived by two sons and one daughter who is possibly Mary STRAIT. Deidamia is buried in Hope Cemetery, South Corning and was the daughter of Sylvester Gillett and Deidamia Hughes.
