WILL of Benjamin King, Proved 1850
This is another one of those wills of a single man, naming peripheral relatives, in this case siblings, brothers-in-law, and nieces and nephews, so it could give a missing piece of info to various surname genealogies of Southold.

I believe this Benjamin may have been the son of Benjamin & Abigail (Terry) King. If so, his paternal line would be:

Benjamin-5,4, John-3, Samuel-2,William-1 King

He would have at least one other King line, as his maternal grandmother was a King, as well.

His father, Benjamin King, died 1780, the same year he was born. His mother, Abigail Terry, married 2nd John Cleaves Terry. This is how he obtained the half-siblings he mentions in his will.
_____________________

WILL OF BENJAMIN KING

Abstracts of wills, recorded at Riverhead, Suffolk County, New York, Van Buren, Elizabeth R, Liber 5, pg 8 FHL Film 860327.

"Benjamin King, of Riverhead. 3 Aug 1838. Died 12 Apr inst. Legacies to: wife's nephew Benjamin K. Paine; Benjamin K. Mulford, of Oysterpond; Benjamin K. Woodhull, of Wading River; to "my" nephew John K. Paine $1,000; and to three nieces of Newburn, N. C., children of brother, deceased, vis Sally Ann Bryan, Betsey S(?)lover, Harriet King; to two half-sisters Fanny Mulford and Betsey Warner. Balance to last named. Exts: Nathaniel Warner, Elisha Mulford. Wits: Isaiah Terry, Isaiah Terry, Jr. Proof adds: one deceased half-sister whose children are Nathaniel, Franklin, Edward K. and Lester Fanning; half-sisters Polly, wife of Henry Conklin; Fanny, wife of Elisha Mulford; and Betsey, wife of Nathaniel Warner; and other heirs, viz: Sarepta Squires, Abigail Fanning, Emily Terry. Pro: 20 Jun 1850. File 3992, pp 114-116."
___________________

WILL OF JOHN CLEAVES TERRY

(He was the step-father of Benjamin King, and natural father of half-siblings mentioned in Benjamin's will, plus seven other children from his first wife, Temperance Conklin. He was also first cousin, once removed, from his second wife Abigail Terry.)

For many of these same people, from perspective of his step-father:

Abstracts of wills, recorded at Riverhead, Suffolk County, New York, Van Buren, Elizabeth R, Liber E, Pg 2, FHL Film 860327.

"John C. Terry, of Riverhead. 8 Mar 1823. Legacies to daughters Polly Conkling, Fanny Mulford, Betsey Warner, Temperance Edwards, Desire Benjamin, Abigail Fanning and her daughter Abigail. Apparel of wife, deceased, to daughters. Residuary estate to son John. Exts: son John, David Warner, John King, Esq, who is called "the son of my wife" Wits: Joshua L. Wells, Eurystheus H. Wells, Karan Moore. Codicil 13 Aug 1823, adds legacies to son Thomas; to grandson Josiah Terry, son of William Terry; and to three granddaughters: Hannah Halliock, Temperance Brown, Betsey Reeve. Wits: Joshua L. Wells, Jesse Reeve, Daniel Aldrich. Pro 11 Sep 1823. pp 19-21."
__________________

I have obtained from a local researcher the following information of graves in a private cemetery from the Ackerly Collection, kept by the Suffolk County Historical Society. (The Ackerly Collection was a private researcher's effort to obtain as much documentation of Long Island history and genealogy as he could.)

BENJAMIN K.
Long Island Genealogy Books on Internet
Remembering that the old books are prone to errors, at the same time, they are often a good starting point. These are the Long Island genealogy books I've found on Google Books. Most are fully accessible - ie downloadable as pdf or ebooks, or just read/search them inside Google books:

History of Mattituck, LI by Craven
The Descendants of Jasper Griffing
Genealogy of the Swasey Family
NYGBR - The Tuthill Family
Paine Family Records
Southold Town Records
The Documentary History of New York
Refugess from LI to Connecticut - Mather
Woodhull Genealogy
Corwin Genealogy by Edward Tanjore Corwin
Southold Connections - Jacobson (Limited access)

Google Books has "pages" for the Jeremiah Vail Genealogy and the William Wells Genealogy, both of which should be in the public domain, but access is limited to none at all. I don't understand why.

If you find more, consider posting them as replies in this thread!

Job Babcock b 1809, Sag Harbor, New York

Smith H. Babcock. In financial circles and among investors generally the name Central Investment Company, Incorporated, is known pretty well all over the country. It has been highly successful in bringing the stable securities of Oklahoma, based on the rapidly rising farm values, to the attention of investors both in and out of the state, and it is now the largest company of its kind in the farm loan business in the state west of Chickasha. Its home offices are on Main Street at the corner of Third Street in Hobart and the present company is the outgrowth of the first business of the kind established at Hobart upwards of fifteen years ago by Smith H. Babcock, who is now president of the Central Investment Company.

Mr. Babcock is an Oklahoma pioneer. Born at Clyde, Wayne County, New York, January 23, 1853, his first twenty years were spent on his father’s farm, and the year 1871 marked his graduation from the Clyde High School. His first independent venture was the purchase of a farm of ninety acres in Wayne County, New York, and he made that the basis of his livelihood and business career until 1883. In 1884, selling his property in New York and coming to the West, he bought a farm of 160 acres in McPherson County, Kansas, and was one of the men who persisted through the many difficulties which beset Kansas agriculture during the ’80s, and eventually profited by his experience. In 1893 he sold his Kansas farm and on September 16, 1893, made the race at the opening of the Cherokee Strip. On that day he rode a hardy cow pony, thoroughly acclimated and accustomed to the plains, and led the run for twelve miles before he decided to stake his claim. His homestead of 160 acres was located a mile and a half northeast of Medford, now the county seat of Grant County. Mr. Babcock pursued his vocation as a farmer on the old homestead claim until 1902, then sold out and removed to Hobart in Kiowa County, where he followed shortly after the pioneer rush into that district. He opened his office as a dealer in farm lands, and was the first in Hobart to take up that line of business. Since then he has organized the Central Investment Company, now incorporated under the state law, and is directing its operations as president.

The Babcock family for several generations lived at Sag Harbor on Long Island, a port which in the nourishing days of the American merchant marine was one of the most important points of outfitting for ships engaged in the whaling industry. Three Babcock brothers named Hedges, Jonathan and Benjamin, had emigrated from England and settled in Sag Harbor just prior to the War of 1812, and all of them subsequently engaged in that war on the side of the United States. The ancestor from whom the Hobart business man is descended was Hedges Babcock. Mr. Babcock’s father was Job Babcock, who was born at Sag Harbor, Long Island, in 1809, and died at Clyde, New York, in 1887. He moved out to Wayne County, New York, in 1851 and lived there quietly as a farmer the rest of his life. Previous to 1851, however, for twenty-two years he had been captain of a whaling vessel that hailed from Sag Harbor. He was not the only member of his family engaged in that industry. He had six brothers, named Benjamin, Hoyl, Henry, Lyman, Jonathan and Hedges, all of whom were captains of whaling vessels that called Sag Harbor their home port. All these veterans of the seas are now deceased. Job Babcock was a republican in politics, a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and was affiliated with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He married Mary Ann Hull, who was born at Hartford, Connecticut, in 1817, and died at Clyde, New York, in 1897. She also had seven brothers and all of them were seafaring men. Smith H. was the older of two sons, and his brother. George is now a farmer at Clyde, New York.

Since casting his first vote Mr. Babcock has been steadily a republican in politics, and while living in New York and in Kansas served on school boards. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and in Hobart Lodge No. 176 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows is past noble grand and was a member of the encampment and canton of that order in Kansas.

At Clyde, New York, in 1872, Mr. Babcock married Miss Cora Gibson, who is a native of Fort Edward, New York, a daughter of D. G. Gibson, who is now living retired at Clyde, New York. Mr. and Mrs. Babcock can take a reasonable degree of pride in their fine family of children, numbering nine in all. Charles, the oldest, was cashier in the bank at Medford, Oklahoma, at the time of his death in 1892; Benjamin, the second son, is a graduate of the Kansas City Veterinary College and is now a veterinary surgeon at Kirksberg, Idaho; Alice is the wife of Mr. Birdsteen of Los Angeles, California; May, also a resident of Los Angeles, married George Sharp, who is cashier for the Southern Pacific Railroad; Ford is vice president of the Central Investment Company of Hobart; Mattie is the wife of Park Siple, cashier for the United States Express Company at Little Rock, Arkansas; Edith is the wife of Temple Kirkpatrick, who is secretary of the Central Investment Company; George lives in Hobart and is in the vulcanizing business; Harold, the youngest, is now a freshman in the Hobart High School.
Cutchogue Cemeteries on Find-A-Grave

Just happened to notice this and thought I'd drop a note to those who might have an interest.

There are two Cutchogue cemeteries - The OLD one and NEW one.

In Find-A-Grave, they are called, respectively:

Old Burying Ground, Cutchogue, Suffolk, New York
Cutchogue Cemetery, Cutchogue, Suffolk, New York

So, folks looking for the OLD burying ground may have trouble finding it, if they are using the Cemetery Lookup, since Find-A-Grave's Cemetery Lookup only looks up a text string starting with the left most letter.

For my own purposes, just so that I will remember to find them a year from now, below is what I call them in my genealogy database. Note that if I know the town for a village or hamlet or CDP, I put it in the place name. Not that my way is the best way, it's just how I do it.

Cutchogue Cemetery (New), Cutchogue, Southold, Suffolk, New York, USA
Old Cutchogue Burying Ground, Cutchogue, Southold, Suffolk, New York, USA

They are at:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=25...;

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=12...;

There are a number of cemeteries in Suffolk County that are in Find-A-Grave beginning with the word Old:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=csr&CScn=O...

I just heard back from the listed transcriber of this listing.

This was an actual inventory of headstones taken in 2002 by a local Eagle Scout troop, of which her son was one. The Scouts inventoried the stones and her son entered the information into a software app (prob a spreadsheet).

So, this could be missing stones that are gone, vandalized, unreadable, etc. And any desired entry should be probably be confirmed by examining the stone or a photo (see find-a-grave for some photos) - as old stones can be very hard to read.

Stirling / Sterling Cemetery Listing of Burials
Hi all:

I was looking all over the internet yesterday for grave listings for Sterling Cemetrey in Greenport and could not find anything other than Find-A-Grave, which I believe to be incomplete. This included looking all through the Longislandgnealogy.com home page. No luck.

Today, I accidentally found one on the longislandgenealogy.com site. It doesn't list the source and the date (ie an inventory or list from a burial register or whatever), but it does appear to be somewhat complete through some date. I post it here in case others have a similar problem in finding it as I did yesterday; as I still don't know how to drill down to it from the longislandgenealogy.com home page.

Thanks to Kathleen Richter for apparently typing the whole thing.

http://longislandgenealogy.com/StirlingCemetery/AStirling.ht...

I have been compiling a lengthy history of the menhaden ("mossbunker", "bunker") fishery on Long Island. George H. Clark and several others from East Marion built a small menhaden pot works (cooking/pressing the fish for oil and scrap/fertilizer) at Shelter Island's Ram Island Beach in the late 1850's. In the early 1860's, Clark moved these works to the north side of the Island, between Dering Harbor and Hay Beach Point. Clark sold his factory on Shelter Island in 1869.

There is a gap of nearly a decade and then George resurfaces, purchasing a menhaden pot works in East Marion, on the shoreline near Marion Lake. He operates these works from 1878 - 1881. In 1880, Clark and William D. Potter had built a menhaden factory in Virginia, on Dividing Creek, on the west side of Chesapeake Bay between the mouths of the Potomac and, to the south, Rappahannock Rivers. This is in Northumberland County (Northern Neck), where many of the Chesapeake Bay menhaden plants were located. The town of Wicomico is just a short distance away.

After the 1881 fishing season, George Clark began to spend his summers at the factory in Virginia, returning to East Marion for the winter.

Could not trace anything further of George H. Clark past the early 1880's.

Hope this helps.

Bill Wise, Associate Director
School of Marine & Atmospheric Sciences
Stony Brook University (NY)

There is a Centerville which is part of the town of Riverhead and the Riverhead post office caters to the area (as it is the same zipcode). It was likely a town that became included as part of Riverhead when it was established. The Riverhead and Riverhead Post Office wikipedias both mention Centerville and as Abequogue and Riverhead border each other this is likely what you are searching for. Riverhead is the centeral point of North and South long Island (where the "fish tails" meet)!

There had been issues with confiscating of belongings. I only discovered my great grandmother was at Islip because I found her name in the 1910 census. (She was a patent from Dec 1909-Aug 1910.) Does anyone know where to get a copy of Polaski's book "Farm Colonies"? I only found it on Amazon for $100!

There are a few articles on his man.

The Case of Two John Robinson's of NYC/Oyster Bay 1660's
Questions raised regarding two John Robinson's of NYC and of Oyster Bay

I have some definite questions and doubts relating to many so called "documented" proof or histories relating to these two individuals and I wonder if items relating to one have been merged into the history of the other. I feel that over the years others have assumed the documented proof and continued to names, dates, marriages and events from one to the other. There seems to be a enough similarity between the two to make the events plausible.

Both John's were very wealthy and involved in many land transactions and were in possession of large tracts of land in New York. They were granted land patents. Both John's seem to have the same names of families associated with them. Both John's seem to have been involved with the politics of the time.

e.g. In the document relating the history of John of Oyster Bay it states he purchased a Ketch in 1682. Although it is also documented that John of NYC purchased the ketch “Bonito” alias “Ruth” at public auction 6 January 1682. Were these facts reported as being associated with the incorrect John?

John of NYC was owned a farm on the Saw-Kill in 1664 and appointed as Alderman in 1683 and subsequently Justice of the Peace in NYC. He lived within the City during this time period

Whereas John of Oyster Bay was involved in the politics of Queens County as a representative. There also seems to be a lack of information regarding John of Oyster Bay during the period in which John of NYC held political offices in NYC.

John of Oyster Bay was reportedly married to Jane Jeake. I have yet to find records attesting to this. Is it possible that reference to this name has repeatedly been copied from one person to another on family trees? The name "Janke" is dutch for Johannes which some report as John of Oyster Bay's Grandfather's name. Can Jane's name be attributed to transcription errors, a combination of an anglicized name with a correct name?

John of NYC is documented as having at least two wives, Grietje Hendricks which he married on 4 October 1678 in New Amsterdam. A second wife Margaret is mentioned in relation to the land patent in New Jersey in 1683. If Grietje Hendricks and John Robinson had issue (surname Robinson): of Maria, baptized 18 July 1683 and Grietje, baptized 12 October 1684 how was he married to Margaret at the time of the land patent transaction on 24 April 1682? So who was Margaret or were they one and the same and the Grietje was then using Margaret as a anglicized name?

It is recorded that John of NYC on 26 April 1681, recorded the sale of various goods to Mr. John Throop of New York that was delivered to him on the sloop “Endeavor.” This same sale of rum and a butt of sherry were reported as having been associated with John of Oyster Bay.

Both John's ultimately had ties to land in New Jersey. A great number of John of Oyster Bay's family eventually migrated to the very lands of which were owned by patent by John of NYC. This is too much of a coincidence to ignore.

There has been no will found on either of these two John's to determine their true identities. In at least the case of John of NYC there seems to have been a connection with the Dutch and the Netherlands whereas in the case of John of Oyster Bay there seems to be a convoluted attempt to connect him to Rev John Robinson Pastor to the Pilgrims although the marital connections between the Davis, Horton, Hallock, and Mather families to make this possible. John of Oyster Bay's descendants appear to have much more of a religious affiliation I do not see that in the limited history of either John's themselves.

It has been assumed that Isaac Robinson is the ONLY direct descendant of the Rev John Robinson to touch the soil on this side of the Atlantic and that all descendants of Rev John within America should end with him. Neither John's fit the timeline. A possibility of relations perhaps but where?

Thomas Robinson son of John of Oyster Bay was awarded Land, buildings and Negroes in Port Royal Jamaica. In consideration that Port Royal was a well documented Slave Market coupled with reported sales of rum and sherry, and masked reports of stolen goods (no detail as to exact items) it makes you ponder on the true nature of John of Oyster Bay as it could be related to legends of privateers and pirates along the North Shore. This is a stark contrast to the likes of the Reverends and Deacons that followed that line.

There are many unanswered question - namely for both is where did they originate from. Many purported writings documenting their histories were written prior to the digitizing of historical documents and easy retrieval via the internet.

So what is the REAL story here?

Re: Why Did So Many Suffolk Families Migrate to Orange?

I recently attended a presentation that was given by the Orange County Historian, Cornelia Bush. She gave several reasons for the migration of this group of people from Southold to Orange County.

1. The desire to spread their Calvinist-inspired gospel among the Indians. This was a group of austere Protestants that can be traced back through time to the Massachusetts Bay and before that, ultimately, to members of the congregation of St Edmund's Church, Southwold, Suffolk, England. According to Wikipedia, "Southwold was the home of a number of Puritan emigrants to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the 1630s, notably a party of 18 assembled under Rev. Young, which travelled in the Mary Ann in 1637." Those followers of Rev. Young/Yonge are our ancestors who stayed together for over 150 years from Southwold to Massachusetts Bay Colony to Southold LI, in the Province of New Haven, to Orange County. It's quite amazing.

2. There was a drought on Long Island from about 1750 to 1752.

3. The large patents in Orange County were re-drawn in the last half of the 18th century into much smaller lots that many average persons could afford.

This group of Calvinists belonged primarily to the Protestant and Congregational Churches, frequently treating them as interchangeable.

The group began scattering from Long Island during the Revolutionary War. Most fled to Connecticut for the duration (see "The refugees of 1776 from Long Island to Connecticut" on Archives.org http://archive.org/details/refugeesof1776fr00mathuoft ). Some stayed in Connecticut after the War, some returned to Southold, some migrated to Orange County, and for the Loyalists amongst them, they went to Nova Scotia.
