Looking to connect with anyone who might have information about the PEDRO's from Owego. I have found information as far back as my great-great grandfather, Francesco Pietraroia.

Francesco and his children worked the railroads in Owego, and shortened the 'Pietraroia' name to 'Pedro'. Some of the family stayed in Owego, while others moved to Endicott.

Specifically, I'm trying to figure out where in Italy the Pietraroia's were from. I believe they were from somewhere in Campobasso, but I have yet to find anything that narrows it down more than that.

Marriage 1814 -- Gillett / Monroe -- in Barton, Tioga, NY

I am looking for evidence of a GILLETT family (& related family members) in Tioga County between 1800 (or earlier) and 1820 ... specifically Archippus GILLETT, his wife Belinda MONROE and their parents (see below):

Archippus GILLETT [born 26 APR 1790] married Belinda MONROE [born 24 JUL 1795] ... marriage in Barton, Tioga, New York on 3 FEB 1814. They had two, possibly three, of their children in New York ... this would be Sarah Ann [born abt 1814], Abigal [born abt 1817] and Betsey [born & died 1819, possibly in NY]...

... but by 1820 [confirmed by census records] the family had relocated and were farming in Pigeon, Vanderburgh, Indiana where they remained.

BUT ... I am looking for a marriage record or some other indication that they were, in fact, in Barton, Tioga, New York at some point prior to the 1820 census.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FYI: Archippus parents were Abraham GILLETT 1745-1808 and Betty FAIRCHILD 1763-1845 ... it is believed (but not proven) that this family may have been in the Rochester, Ulster, New York area previous ... possibly in 1800.
FYI: Belinda's parents may have been Joshua MONROE b. abt 1763 in MA, d. 13 AUG 1841 Talmadge Hill, Barton, New York; and Sarah MAPLES b. 1757 CT, d. SEP 1849 Barton, Tioga, New York.
Any assistance is deeply appreciated ...
Thanks for responding Mary.
I have added many cemeteries to findagrave, but there is a problem with this one.  The people buried in "Snyder Station" cemetery are listed on findagrave in "Candor Cemetery" along with other people.  So, of course, I am totally confused because I have no idea which cemetery is considered "Candor Cemetery".  Does anyone know which cemetery is called "Candor Cemetery"???
The Tioga County Genweb site lists two "North Candor" cemeteries and the "Snyder's" that I took photos of are listed as buried in one of those "North Candor" cemeteries.
I don't want to set up "Snyder Station Cemetery" if everyone is getting their information from "North Candor Cemetery" from the Tioga website and findagrave already lists the "Snyder's" in "Candor Cemetery".
This is very confusing!
So, I am trying to figure out which cemetery is which and where they are located so I can correct findagrave and hopefully move the "Snyder" people to the proper cemetery.
HELP!!
Ginny,
If you know there is a difference in the two cemeteries, you can yourself place the new cemetery on the findagrave site and put a picture of the sign for "Snyders Station" with it. I have had to do this with another cemetery in Tioga Co. New York. I also use the map to locate the cemeteries in the area you are talking about.  And I have to do another one in Pennsylvania when I get down around Mansfield.
Good Luck with your research.
Mary Collins
The Tioga County GenWeb site lists two separate cemeteries that are both called "North Candor Cemetery".  Each cemetery has a different location.
Last week I found the cemetery near "Snyders Station" and it clearly has a sign that says "Snyder Station Cemetery".  The other cemetery is listed as being in the Town of Owego.
Can someone clarify the names and locations of these two cemeteries for me?  I volunteer for Find A Grave and they have no North Candor cemetery listed on their website.
Thanks so much,
Ginny DeLong
Ginny, thanks for the information.  If you are able, I would LOVE a photo of the Abraham Van Wormer and Frederick Van Wormer gravestones.  Since they are father and son, I would expect them to be in the same plot.  Abraham's and Fred's wives were buried back home in Rotterdam, but I don't know why they were separated from their husbands, although both outlived their husbands by decades.  I think that Mary and Margaret are the daughters of Fred.  If it is handy, please snap a photo of their stones, too.
Thanks so much, Ginny!
Dana Van Wormer
Toledo, Ohio
I just checked the list of burials for Hope Cemetery in Newark Valley, NY, from the Tioga County genweb site and there are four Van Wormer's listed in Hope Cemetery.  They are:
Frederick Van Wormer  3/6/1796  -  6/30/1876
Abraham Van Wormer    Nov. 1753  -  4/6/1826
Mary Van Wormer Day    11/10/1792  -  8/23/1836
Margaret Van Wormer Cookson    4/4/1791  -  11/25/1863
The cemetery is pretty large, but I would be willing to look for the headstones for you and take photos if I am able to find them.
Ginny DeLong
You're welcome.  I did make a mistake in my last post in that I said according to the 1860 census all were born in NY except for Margaret who was born PA.  That should have been all born in PA except for Jacob who was born in NY.
It might be worthwhile to visit the Tioga County Historical Society at 110 Front Street, Owego. They might have information on the Lawrence family; also the County Clerk's Office in Owego will have other federal census years as well as the New York State census.
The Tioga County Clerk's office at 16 Court Street in Owego should have the 1860 census.  The phone number is (607) 687-8660.
I just looked for Jacob Lawrence in the 1860 census in Tioga County and did not find him, however, I did find a Jacob Lawrence and family in Athens, Bradford, Pennsylvania:
Jacob Lawrence, 42
Margaret Lawrence, 38
Charles Lawrence, 14
Elizabeth Lawrence, 10
Matilda Lawrence, 5
James Lawrence 2
All born NY except for Margaret who was born PA.  Jacob listed as a sawyer in a mill.
In 1870 they are still in Athens, Bradford, Pennsylvania but Jacob is no longer listed with the family; Charles R. Lawrence is listed as the head of the family, age 23, blacksmith:
Margaret Lawrence, 47
Elizabeth Lawrence, 20
Matilda A. Lawrence, 15
James C. Lawrence, 12
I'm not related.
I don't know if you found your information on Peter Clark or not.  I live in the Town of Richford and I can tell you that the town of Catharine is approx. 40-45 miles from Richford, NY.  I did find a Peter Clark in the Tioga County census (Town of Catharine) in 1820 along with a John Clark, Silas Clark, and Benjamin Clark.
I was in the Richford Congregational Church Cemetery last week and did see a Clark monument there.  That cemetery is so old that the grave markers are not in good shape.  I would be glad to take photos of Josiah Clark's family if you like.
Your post to the message board is quite old - so you may have found your information by now.
Let me know if I can help.
Ginny DeLong   email:  rdelongs@twcny.rr.com
Hi Paul,
I just found your post on the message board for Richford, NY.  I live in the Town of Richford, and I visit the cemeteries often taking photos for "Find A Grave".  I did some checking and was not able to find a Benjamin Berry anywhere in the area.  I did find a Joseph Berry buried in Newark Valley, NY (1783-1829).
Maybe you have found your information already, but if you haven't, I would be glad to help you if you need it.
Just let me know.
Ginny Barry DeLong    email:  rdelongs@twcny.rr.com
Are you still looking for Marsh's in Tioga County, NY?  How about the adjoining county of Tompkins?  I have done some volunteer photographs of headstones for that family.  I recently came across a headstone in Richford Churchyard Cemetery for Samuel B. Marsh who died at 18 yrs. in 1849 and was the son of Burr and Tammy Marsh.  I have also taken photo's of other Marsh headstones, some of them in neighboring Tompkins County, NY.
My great grandmother was an Owego native who married her 1st cousin, a Romaine.  Her sister married a Romine.  Both surnames trace back to the 1660's Dutch Jan Romeyn of New Amsterdam.  Generally, the Romine line developed in NJ, the Romaine line in NYC.
Ernie's GenWeb Tioga Cty. site is a nugget of info - http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nytioga/  Check the Tioga Cemetery listings as I know there are many Romines there.
The county clerk's office has all the original census books readily available for study as well as on microfilm.
You can also get an Ancestry.com 30 day (or annual) subscription to all census images that includes a search function.
From my experience, I'd recommend the subscription search as valuable legwork before making the trip.  You can "save" the pages to your computer for later reference.  Any online free imaging software can enhance the images as to brightness/contrast & magnification.
The Historical Society has a surname card index that often yields valuable info & clues. It's a short, pleasant walk along the river from the clerk's office.
I know bits and pcs but would like to know more before visiting. We have family buried in Evergreen Cemetary, know that Frank Burgess family was close to the Howard Noteware family, the family church was St. Paul's. Can anyone help?
Hi, I have been searching to no avail for information on my great grandmother. Her name was Mary L (Louise) Merchant, or so I've been told.I have a photo with this written on the back. She married John Avery Hoyt in Candor, NY sometime around 1900. It's really strange because it looks like he was also married to a Mary Simpson a couple of years before that and they had a daughter Rosa. But then he he supposedly married Mary Merchant and they had a daughter Edith Mary who was my grandmother. John & Mary Merchant later they divorced and I do have a copy of the divorce decree, but no idea who Mary Merchant's parents were, or what happened to her after the divorce - I don't know where she is buried or have any idea where to find out. None of the relatives seem to have information on this either. I saw your post for this notebook, and I am wondering if this W.H. Merchant and maybe "Mary" underneath that might be the Merchant I have been searching for. I would greatly appreciate any information you have about this. I've been stumped on this brick wall for a couple of years now. I would appreciate getting these notebook entries, bible records, marriage records, death records, cemetery records or anything would be greatly welcomed. I will happily reimburse you the $ for copies of your notebook, and anything you might have concerning this as well as postage.
Sarah J. Taylor b.1815 married Laurin M Hardy approx 1832.  Looking for the names of Sarah's parents or siblings.  Israel Hardy (father to Laurin Hardy) was elected the Justice of the Peace for Spencer in 1830.  I have located Israel Hardy on the 1830 census for Spencer but am not having luck with the family of Sarah Taylor.  Not 100% certain Sarah was born in Spencer -family may have been in Catherine or other Tioga County towns, but Spencer is the family history recorded information.  Thanks for your help!
I am having a heck of a time here.
I am trying to go back on my mothers mothers side of my family tree.
The only information I do have is this.
My mother Sandra Lena Searfoss ( surname )
Her Mother Hazel Lena Martin
Her Mother Mildred Anthony Martin
Now is where it gets messy, Mildred married a man last name Martin round about 1917 I assume in Tioga County New York or possibly PA.
They had my Grandmother in same area on I believe Oct 19,1918
Within a matter of a few months after the birth of Hazel: Mildred and her husband last name Martin were both killed when hit by a train on a motorcycle on Waverly NY and Sayre PA area.
I have no clue how to find any information on them.
I do know Mildreds Mothers married name was Jennie or Jeanie Anthony.. she had two daughters, Mildred and Lena J.
As far as I know all of them at least lived in the Waverly NY area.
I do know that my Great Aunt Lena J. Anthony never married and raised my Grandmother Hazel L Searfoss in the township of Waverly NY.
Lena would never tell anyone about Mildred or her husband, where they were married or where they were buried.  She would always just say " He was nothing but trouble, from the wrong side of the tracks .etc.."  She never would speak of her sister or her mother.  Lena died a very bitter, angry woman full of secrets that I cant seem to get past.
Any help would be greatly appreciated with this
How on earth can I get past this brick wall I seem to be hitting?
I'm not a descendent but I have photos of 12 Cafferty (including Chester) and 4 Lory stones in the Riverside Cemetery on Marshland Road in Apalachin, Tioga Co., NY.  Please email me if you'd like copies, I'll be happy to share.  (Emma Lory was the wife of my husband's 2nd great grand uncle, Franklin B. Short.)
Hello,
does anyone know where I could access the 1860 Census?
I have 1850 data, but not 1860.
I would be willing to go look it up in person..does Tioga County in Owego have it perhaps?
I am specifically looking for the Jacob LAWRENCE family of Nichols, NY. They were in Nichols in 1850, and probably still there in 1860. I believe my Great Grandfather, James Campbell LAWRENCE, was born in Nichols in 1857.
I would like to find the 1860 census for further information on my family.
I am a Lawrence from Waverly NY,
tracing my family history.
thank you,
Scot Lawrence
I looked at the Tioga county genweb site and when I enterd a search word of Martin, I got 156 hits.  Then I realized some of them are for the first name of Martin, and with the other surname of Anthony, I can see that any searching will be complicated for that name as well.  I didn't look at all the hits I got, so you may want to go to the site and explore it.  Just google Tioga county NY genweb.
In the 1910 census in Barton NY, where your Anthony family lived, there is a Frank Martin 19, a boarder in a home, born NY, parents born NY as well.  His occupation seems to be a machinist with a rail road.  I can't find him on any other census in the county, and he is not listed with the WW I draft at the county genweb site.
I think motorcyles were pretty rare in 1918, but if he was a machinist, maybe he built his own.  This is just speculation on my part.  Have you tried sending for birth certificate info on Hazel?
Other census info on the Anthony side is easily found on the census.  It appears that Jennie was married about 1895 to Robert born 1866, and widowed by the 1910 census, and lived with her mother in 1900-1920 census, Sophia Bennett b. 1843.
I saw your posting about the past--maybe you can help me. My mother--Ada Rose Townsend (maiden last name) was born and raised in Waverly, New York. Her parents name were Mortimer Mulford Townsend and Rose French Townsend. Her mother died in 1937 and we don't know when her Dad died or where he was buried. Ada lived in a foster home after her Mom passed away. Ada had a brother who said was a year and a half older then her--his name was Henry Mortimer Townsend--she said he was mentally retarded. Ada lives with me and is 83 years old and would like to find her brother whom she has had no contact with since going to the foster home. If you can help me out in anyway we'd be greatly grateful. I hope this is enough information for to you to be able to help us out with.
In addition to the federal censuses, check the 1855 and 1865 New York State censuses, which include information that does not appear on the federal censuses. Microfilms are available from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. The Tioga County 1855 census is on microfilm 816364; the 1865 census is on film 816365. You might also be able to borrow films from the New York State Library via interlibrary loan.
You will have to browse, as there no indexes (to my knowledge). 1855 includes an “Agricultural and Domestic Manufacturers” schedule. My gr-grandfather is listed in Newark Valley with family information on the population schedule page, plus a four-page wide line detailing his farm.
Mike....regarding your inquiry about Dolores....I have also noticed that she has not posted anything in quite some time.  I do not believe that she has passed away however, I check the local obits everyday and have not seen her name.  I would bet that there are other extenuating circumstances that have prevented her from helping out here.  She has been a great help to me in the past.  My best to her and I hope she can get back on the message boards!
