The first two listed sons of Isaac Bentley,i.e., Thomas and Henry Bentley were probably the sons of William James Bentley based on the marriage record of Henry Bentley to Amanda Livingston in Dunganon in Canada. This was his 2d marriage in 1875 and his parents are listed as William James Bentley and Annie Bentley. (Thanks to Linda Murray of Calgary for finding this record.)
I believe this William James Bentley was most likely the same as William J. Bentley listed in the 1830 census for Chester, Warren Co.,NY. Annie Bentley, wife of William James Bentley may be the Anna Bentley aged 76 listed with Thomas Bentley as his mother in the 1865 census for Horicon,
Warren Co.,NY

Thank you so much for all the information!! At first I was confused by it until I found John St. John in the 1860 census of Queensbury living just two houses away from Joseph. It also had a John age 74 living with him. The last name is hard to read but LaRose certainly fits. (At first I thought it was John L Roc)

Thank you!!
Denise

Are you aware of John St. John? I know nothing about him beyond the following sketchy info (my great grandmother was Lina LaRose), but maybe there is a connection to Joseph:

John St. John: 1783-1868. Buried GF Cemetery, Bay Street, in LaRose plot. Shares stone with Samuel H. LaRose, John LaRose and John's wife Mary. Could he be the father of Mrs. Mary LaRose?

John LaRose: 1802-5/12/1891. Died at age 88 at the house of his daughter, Mrs. Levi Penor, Ogden Street. Father of Augustus LaRose? Per Gail on genealogy.com, he was the father of Augustus and was from Canada. See obituary, 5/13/1891, where he is referred to as one of the oldest of the French people of Glens Falls. Survived by six children.
Francis Loveland: Gail, on genealogy.com, lists her as from Canada and mother of Augustus LaRose.
Mary (_____) LaRose: 1800-1889. Stone says she was the wife of John LaRose. Maybe her father was John St. John? Second wife of John LaRose?

Samuel H. LaRose: 1883-1884. Infant who shares stone with John St. John, etc. Must be a grandchild of John and Mary LaRose; perhaps a child of Augustus and Prosper.

Levi Penor
Mrs. _____ (LaRose) Penor: Daughter of John LaRose; see his obituary. Her father died at her house on Ogden street.

Augustus LaRose: Approx. 1838-4/2/1923. Buried GF Cemetery, approx. 80 yards west of huge Jones Ordway column. Grave has 1836 - blank. Father of Lina LaRose. Of lower Warren Street (not sure if in GF or Sandy Hill) in 1895. Noted as father of Lina in her 1919 obituary. Of 30 West Street (Broad Street), Glens Falls, when his wife died in 1911. Referred to as "Augustin" by poster on genealogy.com. Same person says he came to U.S. in 1855 or 1856, was naturalized in 1860 in Warren County. She has dates of 9/2/1837-4/2/1923 for him.
Mrs. Prosper (Durocher) LaRose: 1836 - 4/28/1911. Died at age 75. Buried with her husband. Obituary says she had been a GF resident for 63 years, or since about 1848. A woman who posts on genealogy.com and is descended from her refers to her as "Prosperine." Gail on genealogy.com lists Francis DeBusha (not sure if correct spelling) as her father; lists ? as mother.

Edward LaPan III
Lina LaRose

Hello there. Chauncey was my great, great uncle. I remember him vaguely when I was a kid, visiting him in his log cabin house in Bolton Landing with my parents and grandmother, Gertrude (wilcox) Smith. Relations on my side are the wilcox ( which most are from that area), Chapman, and Meyers ( or some say Myers). I also remember visiting my great, great Aunt Edith just up the road from Chauncey who lived in a farm house. I would LOVE to hear from you . Big family of Wilcox. Most of our ancestors are buried there and I know where the grave sites are located. My grandmother was buried there with her parents ( my great grandparents). Please contact me.
Sincerely,
Debra (Meyers) Durkee
Glens Falls, New York

Also, if you know the middle initial you can pick up different information using it.

I have another good historical newspaper site-it is for Northern New York State. She claimed she learned after his death from the daughter of one of his co-workers that during WWII they worked to develop Napalm. I've done some research into this and I believe I've confirmed it, but I'd like to know if anyone else has heard this or was aware of a connection between Imperial and Napalm during WWII.
I've tried to find the Henman Bennett family in the 1880 census but with no success. Were you able to find them?

1870-Rensselaer County
1900-Schuylerville
1910-Syracuse

I also tried to find George Arthur Bennett in 1880 to see if he was living with someone else. No luck.

kc

Here is another newspaper site that is good. Sometimes you need to sort which articles refer to the person you are searching. It covers several papers in New York State.

www.fultonhistory.com I search in quotes.

Search
"Howard C Bennett"
Hit # 17 Marriage notice of Howard and Leah in Toyko, Japan in 1918.

Hit # 24 Obit for Rev. Charles Henry Bennett (1931)

____________________________________________________________
I found an Obit for a Henry C Bennett who died at the home of his daughter,Mrs Fred Hammond, in Cohoes,NY in 1917. He was survived by a son, Rev Charles H Bennett, of Broadalbin. It was the same time period that Rev Charles H Bennett(brother of Howard C Bennett)was a minister in Broadalbin. Do you think this is Henman??

www.fultonhistory.com search "Rev Charles H Bennett"
Hit # 8
___________________________________________________________
On the same site search "Leslie Selleck"
Hit # 23 Obit for Agnes R Stever-Sister of Leah Bennett
___________________________________________________________

I'll post more

Kathy
Gene,

I am not related but like to find information for people. I have found a lot on this family. Most of the info I found is from newspaper articles. I haven't seen any of your work on Ancestry. I see you have some of the information but will post what I found anyway. Is the father's name Henman C Bennett or Herman C Bennett? Is he the son of Arthur from Rensselaer County? I'll try to post what I found on each child.

Kathy

it is HENMAN. Yes, an odd spelling but consistent in much of the documentation.
My research gets done in fits and starts. Two years ago I did a lot of digging in the newspaper files on Ancestry. Initial research was from conversations with Linda's grandmother (Flora M. [Bennett] Free). That was augmented with a number of obit clippings she had, and the combination of Census (microfiche-before Ancestry) and trips to the Albany/Troy area of NY for cemetery research.

He is the son of Arthur Bennett and Caroline Penfield Bennett. When they died they were in Rensselaer but Caroline was born in Ballston Center (Saratoga Co) and the children were born in the Milton area or at least in Saratoga Co.
My info on Arthur has him born in Nassau, Rensselaer Co 21May, 1805. So far he has been a brick wall.

Penfield was much easier. Another researcher pointed me at a published Penfield genealogy (which came down to Flora Bennett's generation) and I have been able to work back up the line with a lot of primary documentation.

I periodically go back and rework down internet research to see if I can discover newly posted sources and follow siblings family lines forward to turn up both new information and try and find living relatives.

A number of factors has cut into my research in the last two years but I keep going for new looks at people. That is how I came across the various Bennett listings for Warren Co.

Gene

Kathy217) (and JohnAustin25) 4Oct2009
I do have Ancestry.
Where did you find the data in Ancestry? A bunch of what I have seen posted in Ancestry came from my gedcom done perhaps 18 years ago with LDS. That would be any that show gene3@aol.com as the source.
Howard C Bennett is the half brother of my wife's great grandfather George Arthur Bennett. Their father, Henman C. Bennett, was first married to Lucy Layman and George was their only child. After Lucy died, Henman remarried and the rest of his children were with Phoebe Elizabeth Hetherton.

I have several obits for the family plus of those two generations plus alumni history responses for Howard and his brother Charles to Syracuse University. Also bio information on Howard from the Methodist church including the obits for Howard and Leah done by their son H Curtis Bennett Jr.
Howard Jr. and Dorthea were both born in China.

Happy to share information.

Gene
you can also reach me directly at gene3@aol.com

P.S,
Then there is stuff like
The Post Standard
Saturday, 19June1954 (second section, p. 9)
Son and Daughter of Bennetts Win Doctorate Degrees.
Miss Theda E. Bennett and H. Curtis Bennett, Jr., son and daughter of Prof. and Mrs. Howard C. Bennett 312 Marshal St., were granted doctor of Philosopyy degrees this month.
Miss Bennett, who received her degree in zoology at Syracuse University, is on the staff of Roswsell Pardk Memorial Institute, buffalo, engaged in cancer research. The topic of her dissertation was “A Study of Vinyl Testosterone With the Rat, With Particular Reference to the Adrenal function.”
Dr. Bennet was awarded a degree in comparative literature at Harvard University. His thesis topic was “Chronology of Pindar’s Odes.” He sailed last Monday for Europe. He will spend the summer in Paris and Rome. He had previously studied three years in Rome, sudying one year as a Fulbright scholar. He will return in September to resume teaching in the classics department of Tufts College, Medford, Mass.
Transcribe from original copy of newspaper on Ancestry 30Aug2007 EJF
Saturday Evening, November 1, 1958]
and Howard's is mentioned in there.
I was also not able to find Theda C Selleck (died 1943)

I have found all sorts of things but not those.
Gene
