Poultney VT town report vital statistics, Hampton Cemeteries burial database, limited Hampton Baptisms, Warren and Race book

I have many years of Poultney VT town report vital statistics scanned and in searchable database. Can do limited look-ups. If you do not know, Poultney is a small town adjacent to Hampton, NY and many families moved from one town to the other, and often.

If your ancestor is not in database [meaning I have not got it completed yet] and you really need it, I can look through each report individually. There is always a chance I will miss the entry that way, however. It is best to give a last name only and I will send you all entries already entered with that name. So many went by their middle name or nickname. You may recognize something about the person and realize that he or she is part of your tree. I have years 1921 to present – not all scanned however.
I wasn’t going to mention this until it was completed, but that could be next year! It may be able to help someone now.
I also have a list of those buried in adjacent Hampton NY cemeteries and a partial list of the Hampton NY Methodist/Episcopal church baptism records.

Also a scanned a book written by the Warren and Race families of Hampton and Raceville with much vital statistic and historical information surrounding those two families. It was written in 1923, so anything happening after that year will not be included.

I can do lookups from any of the above.
Elijah Clark died 3 April 1825 in Sandy Hill, NY. I have read that the Sandy Hill Herald published weekly from 1825-1910. Does anyone know if any library or historical society has this newspaper? I have conflicting data on whose Elijah's father was and I thought perhaps an obit would help.
Thank,
Heather in Montana

I am researching my children's father's family, in behalf of my children, Sarah, Nicholas & Angela Linindoll.

It has been a very difficult beginning...since their father Stephen Paul Linindoll 1957-2004 is deceased. The only information I have is:

Mother: Georgia Linindoll from Boston area maybe
Father: Robert McDonald from California
(They were never married)
Brothers: Johan "Yonny" from Maine, Reginald "Rex' (deceased), and Michael
Sister: Gloria (Married name Barker) raised by Grandmother Bessie (unsure of her last name, believed to be from Maine).

Stephen had an Uncle Rex and other siblings who have decendants, one beautiful young woman named Brooke Linindoll

We would really appreciate any help we could get, and would love to connect with relatives. This branch of their family trees as very short branches...thanks in advance.

Their Mother, Cheryl Ann

http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/person.aspx?tid=464363&pid=...

I have been trying to find information about my father John Kimmis and his parents. My father died in 1963 and was born in Dulzura, California and was orphaned at very young age. He told me that his fathers name was also Bruce and he talked about Thirza so I think that was his mothers or grand mothers name. There is a big empty time in my research that I can't find. I am sure that the John Kimmis from Ireland is a great or great grandfather as my father said his family was from Ireland.

The HAXTON (HAXSTUN)line.
In the area they are buried in there is one grave
James O Haxton
died Feb 6 1881
aged 63 years.
I have no idea where he fits in, but am convinced he must, due to where he is buried.
Anyone with any info will be truly appreciated.
Thank you

Barber / Loudon / Armstrong Family in Argyle

Hi All -- I'm trying to find how Joseph Barber is connected to the Loudon/Louden/Lowden family in Argyle - early 1800s. In Joseph's will he mentions his niece and nephews - Joseph, Robert and Margaret Loudon. Joseph's wife is Elinor. I see an Elinor Armstrong connected to Joseph Barber - perhaps Joseph is her father and James Armstrong her husband. However, it doesn't explain the connection with the Loudons. Also connected to the Loudon family is the McConnellee/McConnell/Conley family of Argyle.

This informatin is listed in the "Names of the members of the first Presybterian Congreation of the town of Argyle abt 1802." Any clarification / suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks, Sue sug53@earthlink.net

I'm still looking for birth records for John Hurd Covell (b. 1773), James Franklin Covell (b. 1774), and Susanna Covell (b. 1775), ch. of Simeon and Susanna (Mosher) Covell, and for the death of Susanna bet. 1775 and 1780. Susanna should be buried somewhere in White Creek, where Simeon had extensive business holdings before his deportation to Canada as a Tory. Can anyone help?

Hello -- I am hoping to find documentation that confirms Joseph Loudon and wife, Jane McConnelle, lived in Argyle after abt 1800. I have not found their immigration information or confirmation via census records. Although the information I have is probably correct, I'd really like to find a list / census / some record with his name. Joseph was born abt 1766 in Londonderry, Ireland and came to USA abt 1800. He had four children, John, Mary Ann, Joseph and William. Joseph and William were said to be born in Argyle between 1806-1807. I would appreciate any suggestions/advise on this elusive family. Thank you -- Sue sug53@earthlink.net

Ichabod PARKER - death info?

I descend from Ichabod PARKER, who died 14 June 1826, location unknown. His father (Didymus PARKER) and father-in-law both (Asaph COOK) both appear to have died in or near Granville, NY.

I am in hopes someone can provide me with verification that Ichabod died in Washington County, NY, or perhaps that this county can be ruled out as his death location. Thank you in advance for any help anyone can provide on this line.

Karen Breach
kbreach@pinenet.com
alternate: kbreach@juno.com
After hitting a dead end on an ancestor named Mathias
Reed in Sandgate, Vt. I decided to look at Washington county, NY
when I saw Hebron being mentioned as bordering Sandgate on the
northwest. Mathias Reed was born in 1793 in Sandgate but I have
been unable to locate his parents. (I've been searching for over
10 years). I noticed that the argyle patent shows that part of
Vermont was once part of NY and that people were given huge
amounts of land by the crown at that time 1730's. Anyway if
anyone has any info concerning Reeds from that time period and
where they came from etc. it would be much appreciated. thanks
in advance
Austin Reed

I am trying to find the parents of Caroline Brown, b. 2 April 1811 and d. 5 Aug 1847 according to family records. She may have been the dau of Nathaniel Brown and his wife Lucy Ann Farr of Queensbury. She died 5 Aug 1847 in Whitehall or Fort Ann - records written in the 1880's actually say "Whitehall or Fort Ann". She married Ansel Shepard/Shepherd of Fort Ann in 1826. He remarried to Diana Draper after her death and removed to Bennington County, VT and all family followed him within 10 years as far as I can tell.

Thanks in advance! Three generations of Bakers called Fort Ann home, starting with John Baker, his son Silas, and then 12 children of Silas and Amanda(Offensend)Baker, their son LaFayette married Melissa Carter, and I would love to know more about the Carter connection too.
I have located the original Argyll Land patent farm of Duncan Campbell - at least partialy.

The property was lot number 36 in the original grant and I have been told that it was on the west bank of the Batton Kill River. The farm apparently lay in part of what became Greenwich in 1803 and was later known as the Alphonso Dwelling Farm near Battenville.

I am not sure whether Duncan left a will when he died in 1796 (at 96!!) or who would have inherited the property. I have been told that Duncan is buried there.

Can anyone help me to locate the property as it sits today so that I could have a titles search done on it to see who owned it when? If so - I am not sure the best and easist way to do such a seach in NY. I am in Canada and have never searched NY records.

Thanks

ANN

Chapin, Ide, Adoption

I am stuck. The information I have is from letters from the adoptive father to his son and is as follows:
Male Child born May 28, 1907. Name listed as ____ Hewitt. Place of birth is Lynn, Massachusetts.
Name of Mother is listed as Nellie Hewitt of New York.
Name of Father is left blank.
Parents are listed as being from Herkimer, New York.

Now, according to a letter written by Wilson Ide to his son Chester Ide, Wilson and his wife Mary "adopted" Chester. He states in the letter that he is unsure if said adoption ever became legal. He also says the original birth certificate has the mother's name wrong.
He gave the correct names as bein: Nellie Uhly and Leon Chapin.
Birthing doctor was Parcher Bangs.

The letter states that while Chester's biological mother loved Leon Chapin, Leon's father had made a will that stipulated that Leon work and pay his own way through college and not marry until he completed college.

It also states that his father's family produced a governor for New York and a candidate for president. If I make the ASSumption.. which is a bad thing to do that governor and candidate are one and the same I keep coming up with Roosevelt. It would seem since the adopted father felt it important to tell his son this.. that perhaps it was a fairly close relative??

I gather that both Nellie and Leon were apparently in college and it is unknown if they did marry. I don't want to assume the college was in Massachusett though since that is where the baby was born it does seem fairly safe to conclude that.

The Ide's also adopted another child, a girl named Doris Ellen. I did see in a census the name Jene Ide, but it is the only mention of her that I see so I am unsure of who she is. She is not ever even mentioned in the three letters I have. The letters were written in 1932.
Any help is greatly appreciated.. Thank you!

I am searching for links in Washington County for the above people. They show in the 1820 and 1830 Fed. Census as living in Hartford. Joseph was born c.1799, the son of Nicholas Ashley(b.England c.1760). He married Mary Ann Allen of VT c.1820-1830 and moved from Washington Co to Wayne Co NY before 1840. Joseph appears from the census records to have been one of four children of Nicholas, having an older brother and two younger sisters(c.1801).
Any information would be of help.

My relative, Simon Stone (son of Elias Stone), is listed in some of the history books of that era as being married in Washington County in 1788. His first son, Orrin, was born there in 1789. Simon was married to Hannah Nye, daughter of Silas Nye. Does anyone have any idea where I might find records to confirm this information. The family left the area in 1789 to set up a permanent settlement in Pittsford, Monroe County, NY.

Nathaniel Pitcher, Margaret Stevenson, Solomon King of Kingsbury

I have just found "new" information on these people in a 1908 issue of the Univerity of Michigan journal The Physician and Surgeon. An article on Dr. Zina Pitcher, who was the son of Nathaniel and Margaret born in 1797 in Kingsbury, gives the names of his siblings: Sidney and Charles. It says that Sidney died young and that Charles married and moved south. It also mentions Zina's half brother Nathaniel Pitcher Jr. (the NYS governor). (There were other children from Nathaniel Sr.'s first marriage not mentioned in the journal article.)

It says that Zina's mother, "Margaret Stevenson, a Scotch woman," after becoming a widow married Solomon King and had a son Benjamin with him. Benjamin was the father of Zina Pitcher King who lived in Ann Arbor, Mich.

A few years ago another researcher, John Austin, told me he thought that Margaret Stevenson had married Solomon King second, and he was right.

Thus, this is the Margaret King, 1770-1819, wife of Solomon King, buried in King Cemetery.

Margaret was the daughter of Andrew Stevenson, a tenant of Maj. Skene in Skenesborough before the revolution, a resident of Comstock/Fort Ann after the revolution, and who late in life moved to town of Hector in central NY.

Neal Murray, Argyle,NY 1786

Neal Murray with wife Nancy(Agnes)? and possibly John Murray born Nov 1785 left from Lewes Island. They turned up at Argyle,NY 1786. Neal was a farmer. They are in the 1790,1800,1810 census then disappear. John went to Astabula OH and married Amy Anna Naper in 1809. John and Amy returned to NY for the birth of some of their children. I've been told that Neal went to live with one of his daughters after his wife died. My problem is I have no names for the daughters.

In 1790 census it shows one male over 16, one under 16 and 2 females
In 1800 it shows 1 male under 10 2 males 16-26(John,Neal) and 1 male 45+; females 1 under 10 1 16-26 and 1 45+
1810 shows 1 male 10-16 1 26-44(Neal) 1 female 10-16, 1 26-44(wife)

I have no clue if one set of parents were living with Neal and wife in 1800 or exactly who the older ones were. This is one of my major brick walls. The family history says John was Irish but the departure point in in New Hebrides which is Scotch and he married a Scottish lady. I am totally confused by so many missing facts. It's possible they arrived from Canada or ??? Any help would be appreciated, even any ideas of where to look.

Neal Murray is my gggggrfather. I know a lot more of the history from John down.

Campbell, James from Argyle NY to Ontario UEL

I am trying to find out the origins in Scotland of the following family. They may have been part of the Islay families who came and settled in the Argyle Patent but I have so far been unable to tie them back to that land for certain. Here is the family as it appears in Ontario, Canada in 1813:

James Campbell died 1813 in Augusta (age at death unknown) Ontario leaving a wife sarah. He had previously been married to Phoebe Booth and had these children:

Ann Campbell

Thomas D(uncan?) Campbell

Catharine Campbell

Phoebe Campbell who was born abt 1801 and married John McDonnell in 1830 in St peter's Churcj in Brockville ON

Maria Campbell who was born about 1813 and married James Lancaster Schofield and had at least 2 children - Mary Victoria in 1851 and Frederick in 1836.

James Campbell

This information is from the will of James Campbell when he died in 1813. Also mentioned in his will are Duncan Campbell - third son of James' brother Archibald Campbell. Duncan seems to be living in Argyle in NY and Archibald in Augusta in Ontario. Another nephew - parentage not specfied - is John Campbell of Argyle in Washington Cty. NY

Any help with the parentage of James (died 1813) would be greatly appreciated or any help with how to tie from James back to Argyle would also be apprecaited. James left NY as UEL.

Thanks

ANN

Old Photos, 19th Century, South Argyle-Cossayuna Residents

I have contributed a large number of 19th Century photos of some people from South Argyle, Cossayuna, and central Washington County (from an old family album), to Michelle McKenzie's website of Washington County photographs. Here is the URL that you can click to reach her site:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mlmckenzie/Washingt...

Michelle and her husband have done a great job of showcasing old photos associated with Washington County. She has many others on her site.

The surnames that are represented in my group (either photos or family connections to those in the photos) include the following in alphabetical order: Andrew, Armstrong, Bain, Boyer, Brand, Calvert, Gilchrist, Hale, Irwin, Knapp, Lant, McCollum, McDougall, McEachron, Moore, Pierce, Randles, Rogers, Tinkey, Whyte, Willet. Most of the photos are of members of the Tinkey and Rogers extended families. However, there are a number of photos of people who were not identified in the original album. It is also possible that there were some people who were erroneously identified. Regardless, I would appreciate any feedback from anyone with interest in these photos. (If you have any questions about the website, please direct them to Michelle).

If you have any comments or corrections (bound to be mistakes here), I'd love to hear from you. I hope the information helps some people in their family searches.

- Mike Huggins
Irvine, CA

Jabez Briggs, 1746-1828

The Last Will and testament of Jabez Briggs, (deceased) Be it remembered that I Jabez Briggs of Easton in the County of Washington and State of New York, yeoman. Considering the uncertainty of this life and being far advanced in years but of sound mind and memory, do make and publish this [illegible word] for my last Will and Testament in manner and form following, that is to say in the first place—I do order all just debts and financial charges to be paid and satisfied out of my estate by my Executors, herein after named and appointed.

I give and bequeath to my son Stephen Briggs the obligation that I hold against Benjamin Marshall—also my desk and one bed and bedding for winter and summer to be delivered immediately after my decease--. I give and bequeath to my son Gilbert Briggs five dollars to be delivered in one year after my decease. I give and bequeath to my son John Briggs five dollars to be delivered in one year after my decease. I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary Briggs one hundred dollars to be delivered in six months after my decease. I give and bequeath to Malvina Foster [Porter ?] three hundred dollars to be piad in three years after my decease with Interest . I also give to Malvina Foster two good cows and two good beds and bedding for the same winter and summer to be delivered in one month after my decease. I give and bequeath to my son Stephen Briggs and to my two daughters Mary Briggs and Rhoda Briggs all my live stock [this phrase apparently lined out] my farm in which I now live containing one hundred and five acres or there abouts. I also give the above named Stephen Briggs and Mary Briggs and Rhoda Briggs all my live stock of every description likewise all my farming Utinsils to be for their use and for the use of the farm and after the decease of my wife to be equally divided between them to share and share alike they doing and performing what I shall herein after order them to perform and do.

My will is and I do order my son Stephen Briggs and my two daughters Mary and Rhoda Briggs to take care and maintain my wife in health and sickness and to furnish her with all things necessary for her comfortable support and maintenance during her natural life.

My farm that I have given to my three children above named after the decease of my wife is to be equally divided between them when they shall think proper.

I give and bequeath to my two daughters Mary and Rhoda Briggs all my household furniture and kitchen stuff to be equally divided between them share and share alike to be delivered immediately after the decease of my wife and my further will is that my two daughters Mary and Rhoda shall have the use of a horse and carriage to convey them to meeting [probably the Quaker Church] and visiting whenever they shall need the same.

All the remainder and residue of my property of whatsoever name or nature I order my Executors to divide equally between Stephen Briggs, Gilbert Briggs, John Briggs, Mary Briggs, Rhoda Briggs and Malvina Foster to be equally alike.

And lastly to this my last Will and Testament I do nominate, constitute and appoint John Dennis and Joseph Taber Executors, desiring them to see the same duly and truly fulfilled according to the intent and meaning thereof [,] hereby revoking all former Wills by me made.

In witness whereof I have herewith set my hand and fixed my Seal in Easton in the County of Washington and State of New York this Twenty Sixth of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty eight—

Signed, Sealed and declared by me to be my last Will and Testament--- --- ---- ----
In the presence of us who in
presence of the testator and in
the presence of each other[,] we Jabez Briggs
have hereunto Set our names
the day and date above written
as witnesses ex [sic]

Richard Hall
Timothy B. Cornell
Ryal [hard to read] G. Barnum

Notes about Jabez and his will:

I think that the first witness Richard Hall was the son of Rufus Hall; Rufus Hall helped to found the little Quaker Church in Easton and was present during the Revolutionary War when the Indians famously spared the meditating congregation from massacre. I suppose that some patriarchal Quaker families worked inside the intermarried Quaker community to mediate disputes and maintain internal peace. Probably that was the role of Richard Hall in this estate.

According to my records, Timothy B. Cornell was grandnephew to Jabez Briggs. My records show that Timothy was son of Eliakim Cornell and that both father and son were buried in Galena Cemetery in Delaware County, Ohio. Also Timothy was married to Parmelia or Permelia Briggs, but I do not have her ancestry except for a note that her father was Thomas Briggs, Jr. Probably she was related to Jabez somehow, also probably to her husband.

The first name of the last witness was Ryal or Royal or Urial, and I have no information about him.

Executor Joseph Taber was husband to Cordelia Briggs, who was granddaughter of Jabez Briggs from his daughter Mary Briggs. According to Washington County historian Jane Betsy Welling, Mary Briggs was secretive about the name of Cordelia’s father; and, in fact, I find it recorded nowhere to this very day.

Jabez Briggs was buried in the Briggs-Taber Family Cemetery in Easton, New York, (GPS N42.58.631 W073.32.528) in his 83rd year (CEMETERY RECORDS, THE TOWN OF EASTON, WASHINGTON COUNTY, NEW YORK, Historical Data Services, p. 4).

Jabez’ will began its way through probate on June 16, 1828. Samuel Standish, Jr. was surrogate.

Jabez Briggs was married to Sarah Briggs during 1772 in Dartmouth in Bristol County, Massachusetts. Apparently, Sarah and Jabez were first cousins. According to my records, Sarah died in August of 1828, shortly after her husband. Both were buried in Briggs-Taber Cemetery in Easton, New York

A man named Jabez Briggs served in the Thirteenth Regiment of the Albany County Militia as an enlisted man according to New York Military in the Revolution, p. 2299, in Ancestry.com. Although the Quaker religion forbade service in the militia, it looks as if some Quakers were drafted. On the whole, I think this militiaman is our Jabez. (Early Albany was reduced in size as later counties like Washington were established.)

According to my records, Jabez had a daughter named Meribah , who married Seneca Duell/Deuel, brother to my ancestor Permelia Duell/ Deuel. I think that Meribah and Seneca had one child named Sidney, who was named in the will of Seneca’s father Ebenezer Deuel but not in Jabez’ will. Jabez and Seneca had a falling out; and Seneca fled to Canada, Jabez even suing the sheriff of Washington County for allowing Seneca to escape… . I suppose that Meribah was dead by the time that Jabez made his will; she might have been buried in the Briggs-Tabor Cemetery in Easton, New York.

I am looking for information on my great grandparents. William Berrigan was born in NY (abt 1874) and resided in Granville NY in 1910 census. William married Catharine Sullivan (b. abt 1876) from County Cork, Ireland around 1908 - I believe in Granville NY. My grandmother, also named Catharine, was baptized in Granville NY in Dec 1913 (I have the baptismal records), but we never could find her birth certificate. It is possible she was born in nearby Vermont. Her sponsors at baptism were P.J. McDonough and his wife. The Berrigan family is supposedly from Granville NY, but I can't seem to find any matches in the 1880 or 1900 US Census. William had one known brother - Daniel.

Jacob Cook, b 1790s, Easton, Washington Co. NY

Seek information on Jacob Cook, who was born at Easton, Washington Co., NY , probably in the 1790s, the son of David Cook and his unknown wife. David’s wife probably died in the 1790s as she was not listed with the family in the 1800 and 1810 census records. It is hoped that descendants might know her name.

Jacob was mentioned as the fourth son in the will of David Cook written 16 March 1824.

David Cook was born about 1746 in Dutchess Co., NY. He moved to Easton where his parents and brothers had moved about 1774. Children named in his will:

John Cook, eldest son, born perhaps 1786 or earlier.

Stephen Cook, second son, born 23 August 1788. Married Elizabeth Benson 29 March 18`5 and lived at Danby, VT.

Phebe Cook, born 29 December 1789. Married Duty Benson about 1815, moved to Jefferson Co. NY in 1816 and to Michigan in 1835.

Ebenezer Cook born about 1792. Moved to Genesee Co. NY in 1823. Died there 1829.

Jacob Cook, fourth son. Born in the 1790s.

William Cook, fifth son. Born in the 1790s.

Hannah Cook, youngest daughter. Born 1790s. Married a Cobb.

Richard H.
I am interested in any information of a Thomas Parker born about August 31, 1782 (1781?) in Granville, NY. He may be the son of Ichabod Parker and Susannah Cook. Susannah died Sept 7, 1791. Ichabod & Susannah were married in Wallingford, CT and moved to Granville. Ichabod and Thomas may have moved to KY after Susannah's death? Interested in any information of the three. Rev War? Any land grants, pensions? Thomas had a daughter with the name of Susannah C. Parker (same as his mother?) I have nothing of any children to Ichabod and Susannah. I have nothing for the parents of Thomas Parker.

Thank you.
Darrell

I asked this question deep within my Pomeroy LYON post but thought it would stand a better chance of being answered if it stood by itself.

My mother in law remembers - she thinks in the 40s or 50s- going to a cemetery "near the grange in Whitehall".

Could someone name that cemetery-- and does anyone know if there is a list of who was buried there- or who takes care of the cemetery today.

Thanks,
Jim

I am interested in the children of Benjamin Rice who was reported as head of household in Hampton, Washington County, NY for 1800 through 1840 Federal Census. IGI has listed a Benjamin Rice born in Washington, NY 1757 and died 12 Feb 1831. The 1840 Census may be his son if he had a son Benjamin. Any clues would be helpful. Thanks in advance.
