I am searching for information on Mary Pugh, she was born in North Carolina in 1851. I have no records of her parents or if she had any siblings. She was found in 1880 residing in Smith,Tx and was listed as widowed. Mary is my ggg Grandmother. She married Bill Jimison and they had a son named Fred Jimison whom was my gg grandfather whose daughter Fannie Jimison was my grandmother.

I am looking for any information on the Pugh or Peugh family in North Carolina before or around about the time of her birth and I guess up until 1880 or later.

I am trying to find my Pugh family members. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Williams in North Carolina

I am looking for the family roots of one Henry Williams born 1835 in North Carolina.

According to his Civil War Pension records, he states his birth year as 1835 and was bron in North Carolina. According to the 1880 Census in Iowa, Henry again shows his birth year as 1835 and that his parents were both born in North Carolina.

Henry served with Company I 7th Cav in Iowa during the Civil War. How Henry got to Iowa from North Carolina, we do not know. The earliest I have been able to place him is 1860 in Iowa

So, if anyone has any info on a Henry Williams born 1835 or there abouts, I would be interested in hearing from U

Also, Henry Williams is buried in St Helena, Nebraska. I just now got his Civil War tombstone in place. Henry died in 1890 in St Helena, Nebraska, leaving a wife to care for their 6 children.

E-Mail: whistleinthewind@hotmail.com

Thank U and God Bless,

M Williams

I'm seeking information on John and Rutha Fox. Rutha was born in Tenn possibly around 1864 in Cocke Co., her maiden name was also Fox. They had a son, James Porter (1880-1953)and a daughter Lou V. (1884- ). The family moved to Cabarus Co prior to 1900, not sure why. James married Rebecca Mabery, she died in 1946. They had at least one daughter Mary H. who would have been born around 1907. I have information that James and Rebecca were buried at Oakwood Cemetery, but I haven't been able to verify that on any cemetery list. I'd like to find out as much as I can regarding dates of birth, marriage and death and where they were buried. I apprecaite the help.

The last I can find of him in in 1910 in Buncombe county, with Talitha and his sister Maggie. That is where I would look for their deaths. But they are not in the death certificates that I can find. Unless the handwriting on the death certificate was so bad that the name has been transcribed incorrectly.
However, Maggie seems to be back in Cabarrus county by 1930 and dies in the Cabarrus county home. I cannot make out where she is buried. Since she had lived with her sister Bettie until she died, and then was with Thomas, either all her siblings were dead by then or they were no longer able to support her.
I have checked every published list of Cabarrus and Rowan cemeteries and have not found Thomas or Talitha.
I am at the end of my currently available resources.
When I make another trip to Cabarrus county, I will try to check for marriages.

Good Luck

Heck I need all three of his wifes.

As far as his death certificate. He was not listed so he may have died before 1910.

I have been looking at 1860 census's all night and found him and his family as Brumlow.

Found out that Margaret (Thomas's little sister) was listed as blind in that census. Neat cause she was a music teacher later in life.

Do you have any suggestions on finding a burial for Thomas S (not sure about the Stanhope) anymore...
Early Cabarrus County marriage bonds were sent to Raleigh and now reside in the archives, they were microfilmed and a copy of this film was obtained by the Mormans and they published a volumn on these records, an origional copy is located in the history room of the Rowan County Library. The origional copy that had been in the Register of Deeds in Cabarrus County was stolen and a zerox copy of that volumn is there now. The marriage licenses are indexed and those volumns are in the Register of Deeds in Concord.
Havis

Please don't let me take advantage of your knowledge but how did you know to look at the previous page under the same number? I have been looking at census reports for years and have never known that two households could or would have been added like that.

Was it a taker mistake do you think or was there a reason they did this?

As far as Alice M. Brumley. She is a mystery to me. I never knew she existed until I was researching Thomas. He was 2nd great grandfather.

He was born in Rowan County, North Carolina in 1849. His son (Lester Alexander Brumley, Sept 13, 1875) was my 2nd great grandfather through Thomas's (apparently 2nd wife) Margaret Ann Hunter.

Margaret Hunter Brumley apparently dies giving birth also to their 2nd child (like Alice's mother). I have no idea what Alice M. Brumley's mother's name was... but you have given me a great start to find out.

According to the 1900 census he was remarried to a "Talitha" for 9 years. She was reportedly of Indian descent. I don't know what happened to him after that. I have been unsuccessful in finding him in any of the other census information.

Thank you again for the direction and I am going to spend my genealogy time today looking in the direction you have given me.

I did not know anything about Alice or her mothers last name. I was told the mother was of indian descent.

Thank you so very much.

Do you have any suggestions on how to find more about her father Thomas S. Brumley?

Looking for any information regarding Sunderland School in Concord NC. My great grandmother, Fannie Carter, who was born in Concord in 1881 was listed as a pupil at the school in the 1900 census. I appreciate any help regarding Sunderland school, especially between 1881-1902 and any information about a Carter family from Concord that may have had to give their daughter up to this school. Thank you all for any help.
Thanks for replying, Larry. I haven't seen this reference that you're talking about. Can you tell me where to find it? I know Mary Russell had two other children who appeared in the court records, Stewart and Zachariah McCurdy, and in the April 18, 1798 session, John Klutz was to pay child maintenance for Mary Russell, but I haven't ever seen anything that positively identifies this Ruth as her child. If you can provide any more information about this I'd be most appreciative.:)

Thanks
Kathy

In the Cabarrus County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions April 1797 - April 1805 there is a reference I don't understand. Can anyone tell me what this means?

January 21, 1800 session:

Ruth, natural born child, aged 9 years & 11 months. Apprenticed to Jeane Russel.

Is Ruth a natural born child of Jeane? The only Jean/Jane I'm aware of in Cabarrus County was the widow of James Russell who would have been 50 years old in 1790 when Ruth was born. Also, why would a child be apprenticed to her own mother? Anyone have a clue who Ruth is?

Thanks,
Kathy
John Brown of Cabarrus, 1810

My sixth great-grandfather John Brown apparently
resided in Cabarrus Co., NC, in 1810. In that
year he sold land on Fishing Creek in York Co.,
SC, to his daughters and their husbands.

John Brown of Cabarus Co., NC, 11 Aug 1810.
sold land for $400 to Josinah Garrison of York
Dist., SC, son-in-law,...all that tract granted
to Samuel Neeley in York Dist., SC, & conveyed
by Samuel Neeley to my son Alexander Brown which
has descended to me by heirship (300 acres) ...
60 acres by treaty (1763) to Catawba Indians
leaving 240 acres (on Fishing Creek).
Wit: John Reeves, (North Carolina); James
Garrison, Sgr., (South Carolina)
York Co., SC, Deed Book G, page 402 (1810)

In 1812 John Brown's daughters & sons-in-law
sold the same land to William Gilmore.

There is a listing for a John Brown in the
1810 federal census for Cabarrus Co., NC, but
I do not know whether this is the same man.
(Page 366)

From the first deed above, it appears that
John Reeves, witness, was in North Carolina,
while James Garison, Senior, witness, was
certainly known to be in York Co., SC.

I know very little about this John Brown.
John Brown was a common name in this area.
It appears that Brown's wife may have been
named Mary. Whether she was a Watson or a
Neeley or belonged to some other family is
unknown. The son Alexander died young. Two
of John Brown's daughters married direct
ancestors of mine, but only one Sarah Brown,
wife of Josina Garison, was my direct ancestor.
This land on Fishing Creek bordered on the
Indian lands in this area and part of it was
incorporated into the Indian boundary. I do
not know why John Brown moved into North
Carolina or whether he remained there. Two
of his grandchildren were named John Brown
Faires and Mary Brown Faires.

Spelling of associated families' names vary:
Faires, Faris, Neeley, Neely, Garison, Garrison.

John Brown may have been related to other
Brown families of Fishing Creek in York &
Chester Counties, SC. Or not.

You can view at
http://files.usgwarchives.org/nc/rowan/court/safritsa224nwl....
I have a copy of the original Bartardy Bond for Paul Safrit. If you would like a copy please email me.

I haven't been able to figure out who her parents were but I definately believe she is related to Frederick Cartner.
Any time a family is the first on the page, I always look at the previous page. And when they are last, i look at the following page. Also when you do that you must compare household and family numbers. And watch the original page numbers also. Some of the pages got out of order when they were microfilmed. Makes it look like someone's children were living with total strangers.
In Thomas case, the taker was listing everyone in the Barringer house and ran out of room. The proper method was to repeat the numbers at the top of the next page and list the rest of the household.
You must also remember that relationships were not asked for until the 1880 Census.

I have not found a burial record for Thomsa Brumley in the
Grave Sights of Cabarrus County books.

Some one will have to check the Cabarrus Register of Deeds marriages from 1868 to 1917 for his marriages. But my bet is that the first wife is the Alice F (Barringer) Brumly that is at Poplar Tent. She is the right age and death to be Alice M Brumley Alexander's mother. And Caleb Barringer did have a daughter Alice in the prior Census.

In 1880 Census, Alice is with her Barringer grandparents still, but incorrectly listed with the Barringer surname.

On the 1870 Census that you mentioned, Thomas and baby Alice are in the household with Barringer grandparents, but Barringers are on the previouse page, with the same household number.

Alice F (Barringer) Brumley b 7 Aug 1849 d 9 May 1870
buried at Poplar Tent Church, Cabarrus County

Were the initials of Thomas second wife N T ?

Infant Brumley
b 17 Mar 1894 d 21 Mar 1894
dau. of T S and N T Brumley
Poplar Tent Church, Cabarrus County

Cemetery info for Poplar Tent Church, from Grave Sights of Cabarrus County, Cabarrus Genealogy Society, Book Two.

North Carolina Death Certificates up to 1975 are online at Ancestry.com now.

Also to find Brumley families in 1860, use "Brumlow". The problem is figuring out which Thomas he is. There are two at about the same age.

In 1860 John A Brumley was assessed for tax with 314 acres of land, valued at $7 per acre, total value $2198,location of land- C A & P A Barringer & others, Clarke Creek.
From "Cabarrus County Tax Assessments 1860 and 1863", Cabarrus Genealogy Society, Bernard W Cruse Jr, Editor
