Looking for any information regarding Sunderland School in Concord NC. My great grandmother, Fannie Carter, who was born in Concord in 1881 was listed as a pupil at the school in the 1900 census. I appreciate any help regarding Sunderland school, especially between 1881-1902 and any information about a Carter family from Concord that may have had to give their daughter up to this school. Thank you all for any help.
John Brown of Cabarrus, 1810

My sixth great-grandfather John Brown apparently
resided in Cabarrus Co., NC, in 1810. In that
year he sold land on Fishing Creek in York Co.,
SC, to his daughters and their husbands.

John Brown of Cabarus Co., NC, 11 Aug 1810.
sold land for $400 to Josinah Garrison of York
Dist., SC, son-in-law,...all that tract granted
to Samuel Neeley in York Dist., SC, & conveyed
by Samuel Neeley to my son Alexander Brown which
has descended to me by heirship (300 acres) ...
60 acres by treaty (1763) to Catawba Indians
leaving 240 acres (on Fishing Creek).
Wit: John Reeves, (North Carolina); James
Garrison, Sgr., (South Carolina)
York Co., SC, Deed Book G, page 402 (1810)

In 1812 John Brown's daughters & sons-in-law
sold the same land to William Gilmore.

There is a listing for a John Brown in the
1810 federal census for Cabarrus Co., NC, but
I do not know whether this is the same man.
(Page 366)

From the first deed above, it appears that
John Reeves, witness, was in North Carolina,
while James Garison, Senior, witness, was
certainly known to be in York Co., SC.

I know very little about this John Brown.
John Brown was a common name in this area.
It appears that Brown's wife may have been
named Mary. Whether she was a Watson or a
Neeley or belonged to some other family is
unknown. The son Alexander died young. Two
of John Brown's daughters married direct
ancestors of mine, but only one Sarah Brown,
wife of Josina Garison, was my direct ancestor.
This land on Fishing Creek bordered on the
Indian lands in this area and part of it was
incorporated into the Indian boundary. I do
not know why John Brown moved into North
Carolina or whether he remained there. Two
of his grandchildren were named John Brown
Faires and Mary Brown Faires.

Spelling of associated families' names vary:
Faires, Faris, Neeley, Neely, Garison, Garrison.

John Brown may have been related to other
Brown families of Fishing Creek in York &
Chester Counties, SC. Or not.

Parnell and Raymer Families of Cabarrus Co.

I am following this line:

Archie Eugene Parnell / Deal [explained below] son of,

Walter Parnell who married a Myrtle Raymer,

William E. Parnell married Sarah Jane "Sally" Kindley [also seen on her children's birth documents as Sarah Jane Smith and Sally Smith],

Pink Parnell [Pless Pink Parnell and/or P. P. Parnell] married to Jane Sossamon and/or Martha J Griffin and/or Treassy Unknown.

What I do know...

Walter Parnell and Myrtle Raymer were married for a short time and had a son named Archie Eugene Parnell born in 1923. Walter was from Concord, NC and left for Danville, VA after some trouble with the AFL/CIO. His wife Myrtle Lee Raymer Parnell stayed in Concord.

I am assuming there was a divorce because Myrtle married a Mr. Deal. I found Myrtle on the 1930 Cabarrus Co. Census as Mertie Deal. Archie was then raised by his grandparents, William and Minnie Raymer, also as seen on the 1930 Cabarrus Co. Census.

Archie did not know that the man his mother was married to was not his father. He went to school, and was known as, Archie Eugene Deal. He never found out his real name until he applied for a job at Martin Aircraft and needed a birth certificate. He never had his name changed and continued to live by the name Archie Eugene Deal.

I am trying to figure out who William E. Parnell's real parents were. It appears that Pink, also seen as Pless Pink Parnell is his father, but which woman is the mother?

Within the 1850 and the 1860 census for Cabarrus County, there is a John Faggart, a farmer, his wife Elizabeth and his children; however there is also a free Black person, a mulatto laborer named Joel House. Working with him in the 1860 census Joel is working with a Black male named Andrew Reed. I wonder if there are any other records to Joel House and for this Faggart family.

We are searching for information about the William Jamison-Susanna Steele family. William was born in Cabarrus County in 1799. We don't have a marriage date for William and Susanna. They apparently went to Missouri around 1825-27. We would like to find the names of William's parents. Anyone with suggestions? Thanks for any help.

Do you have Indian blood in your family from NC, Maybe your part of the Lost Colony?

First the Lost colony project is a non profit organisation.

Hello,

For those of you who don't know about the mystery of the Lost Colony, here's a primer. In 1587, Sir Walter Raleigh financed a venture in which 116 men, women and children were planning to establish the first permanent colony in the New World. Their goal was to raise tobacco and other supplies that colonists were unable to obtain in England, and to search for precious minerals, like gold.

In the fall of 1587, the colonists finally arrived on Roanoke Island in present day North Carolina, after a very difficult journey in which their food supplies were ruined. They sent John White, whom they had elected governor, back to England to obtain food and supplies and expected his return in the spring of 1588. However, the Spanish attached England and England, having no Navy, impressed all of her fishing vessels and private merchant ships into Naval service. Finally, in 1590, three years after
leaving the colonists which included his daughter, son-in-law and infant granddaughter, he returned to Roanoke Island to find it deserted, but not destroyed. It appeared as if the colonists had simply moved. A single word, a clue, Croatan, was carved on a tree. The Croatan were the friendly Indians living nearby. Before John's departure, he had instructed the colonists to carve crosses if they had to leave in distress. There were no crosses.

John White would spend the rest of his life searching for the Lost Colonists. Many hints and clues indicate that at least some of the Colonists survived and were assimilated into the native tribes. The
question is, did they, and if so, who are they today?

In 1993, the original site of the Croatan village was located. Subsequent archaeological and genealogical research suggests that the colonists did survive, and that when the land was granted to settlers, it was granted to some of those survivors who were by that time considered to be Indians. With recent advances in DNA for genealogy, we finally have, today, the ability to solve the mystery. We have created a plan that combines history, genealogy and DNA to solve the mystery. However, we can't do this alone. We need the help of the families who have been identified as "families of interest", being either roster members of the Lost Colony of those who obtained land grants on the original Croatan village site. Many of those names are the same.

In order to educate people and work closely with people who are interested, we are sponsoring the Lost Colony Symposium for DNA and Recent Research Sept. 7-9, 2007 at the Lost Colony Center in Williamston, NC. The symposium will be held between the Center and the Holiday Inn, as noted on the flyer at the website

Given that your surname is one of those on our "Names of Interest" list, I hope that people on the list will join with us in our research. I am hoping from this mailing, aside from encouraging people to attend the Symposium, to achieve the following:

1. To identify a primary research person or persons for your particular
surname who would serve as a contact/coordinator for future postings,
requests and research.
2. To identify a family archival website(s) if one exists.
3. To identify if there are any families of that surname that are from NC
(or early coastal SC or VA), have oral histories of Indian or "mixed"
heritage, are involved with any of the tri-racial isolate groups
(Melungeons, Red Bones, etc.) and/or have any oral history of the Lost
Colonies.
4. To determine if the family group is involved already with DNA testing,
and if so, who coordinates that effort.
5. To determine if there is any research occurring or that has occurred for
your surname in Great Britain, and if not, if anyone is interested in
pursuing that avenue.

To become involved with the Lost Colony project, or to support the project, please attend our Symposium. Our project plan will be announced at the Symposium, and we have a long list of wonderfully educational speakers. The
flyer is attached. Bring your pedigree charts and your genealogy as the right people will be present to help you with your testing plan.

If you can't attend the conference, you can still join the project.

Information will be posted shortly about how to do that on the Lost Colony website. We are in the process of setting us a private newsgroup for project members only which will also be available after the symposium.
Furthermore a blog has been created. http://www.the-lost-colony.blogspot.com/

If you are interested in this project or can be of help in any way, please contact me at restes@comcast.net.

The surnames are on our blog: http://www.the-lost-colony.blogspot.com/

Roberta Estes

"I will be on vacation from now until July 24th, and I will have very little access to e-mail. Please e-mail questions about the Symposium or the project to either my volunteer assistant, Nelda Percival at nelda_percival@hotmail.com or Anne Pool, the Center's Educational Director at croatan@peoplepc.com. They will answer any immediate questions about the Symposium and you will be put on an interest list."

Can anyone tell me about Spears Cemetery in Cabarrus County? I think they might be my relatives. My Spears family come from a presently unknown locality in North Carolina and settled in Wilson Co., TN in the 1820s. They apparently associated with a Rev. Amzi Bradshaw of the Primitive (Presbyterian) Church and the Spears family were very religious. Amzi Bradshaw's Morrison ancestors are buried at the Spears Cemetery in Cabarrus County and I think this could be a connection. Any help on this Spears family much appreciated, and any history on the Cemetery.

Sincerely,

Nathan W. Murphy

My gggrandfather Pad Stephenson was born in Alabama abt.1847/1848.I've tried locating him in the 1870 census no prevail, but in the 1880 census list list me a widower with three children.I recently learned from a cousin he was once married before but I can't find the record.I've tried the 1866 census he wasn't there.I've located other census such as 1910.The 1910 listed him either Pad s.or Paul L. which I find very confusing.Pad's father was listed born in North Carolina and South Carolina. My question to you is will you please look up in the 1850&1860 slave census list. I would like to know if any slaveholders bought any slaves there and sold them to planters/farmers in Lawrence County,Alabama in Mount Hope by the surname Stephenson/Stevenson.If you find anything will you please contact me.Thank you!

These six boys came from Scotland with their father, Robert Campbell and settled in what is now Cabarrus County, North Carolina. My line is the second Robert, who had a son, Maxwell, who later immigrated to Sangamon Co. Ill. I would like information on any of these boys as to where they may have lived. All fought in the Revolutionary War. Some may have fought for the British. Any information on you could share would be appreciated. If I have information you could use, please ask.

Among those (in 1924) we noted the tombstones of the following: David Reece, signer Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence'

This could be David's son, also a David Reese.
He lived next to the Phifers where his father David Reese (The signer, d. 1787) had lived in Cabarrus.

I see a recent visit to Phifer's cemetery noted unknown and broken stones.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccabarr/PhiferCem.htm

Does anyone know of other surveys of the graveyard or the context of the quote?

----------

Vol. 5, No. 3 P. 97 Sept 1997 Old Harris and McClure Cemeteries: shows David Reese was buried in the McClure Cemetery; the McClure Cemetery was relocated and is on land owned and maintained by the city of Concord.

This may be the grandson of David Reese the signer.

Does anyone know anything about the present location of the cemetery or details regarding the relocation?

I am trying to locate records on my Knight ancestors who lived in or around Asheville, NC in the late 1700's. But, since historical records are indexed by counties, I need to know what county the town of Asheville was in during that timeframe. (I understand, Buncombe County was formed from(out of) Rutherford and Burke counties in 1791). Any help would be

HELP ME in finding Joseph Frenchhawk and/or his family !!

For about 3 weeks I suddenly lost connection with my cherokee-friend Joseph Frenchhawk. I feel very uneasy about that, thinking something bad happened to him. I don not know how I can get information about him. He lives in Lenoir City ( Tennesee), but his family lives in Cherokee-Reservation in North Carolina. Cherokee is his Home, where he goes often. I hope somebody can give me information about Joseph or his family (like to get connection with his family in finding out how Joseph is doing) .
Please help me, I am very confused !

Census records lean towards 1777 but I have no hard proof. Anyone have suggestions?

Purviance Williams

I am the gg-gdaughter of Purviance Williams, b. Sept. 30, 1803 in NC and died 1855 in TX. I have what, I think, is a copy of an authentic Bible page which shows, Benjamin Williams, b. July 11, 1772 and Amey Williams, b. Dec. 1. 1780. Their first son was James R. Williams b. December 7, 1793; Jarrot R. Williams, b. Dec. 24, 1800; Purviance (see above); Judith R. Williams, b. January 7, 1806; Elizabeth R. Williams, b. Aril 24, 1808. The 1850 U.S. Census in Panola County, TX states that Purviance was born in NC (there was no County listed) and went to TN in 1812. I found him in Henry and Stewart Counties, TN in the 1820's and '30's. He came to TX in 1836-7.

I would greatly appreciate corresponding with you.

Thanks,

Nancy Williams Edwards
Carrollton, Dallas County, TX

Two twin boys, John W. and Charles Ellison Sehorn were born in 1808. They were raised by the daughter of Henry Long and Anna Catherine Pence Long, Margaret Catherine Long. The Longs were members of the Lutheran faith, and I have not been able to confirm marriage of Margaret Catherine Long to a Sehorn, or the twins birth to her. Any information on how I might follow this thread in church records, or any other source, would be much appreciated.

I am looking for the Jacksons, I think Kinston North Carolina.
There were three children born to a Jackson female who never married their father. There were two girls and a boy.
The children were in their grandmother's custody when the grandmother and young Susanne Jackson were hit by a truck along the side of the road, possibly in Kinston or a town close by. The child Susanne was severly injured, and was hospitalized . . . it is suspected the grandmother was killed in the accident.
Susanne is now 55 years old, and is looking for her siblings.
If you have any idea who these people are, please contact me.
Thank you.

Looking for great-grandfather

Delia A. Fletcher, my great-grandmother married Charles Marion Williams around 1859 and they had a child Ellefare Williams. He went into the civil war in 1961 and was wounded Oct 1863 and died Nov 1863. Delia as I hear, never married again but had 4 more children, one being my grandfather (Augustus M. Williams). He was Born 1873. I am looking for his father. Augutus had a another sister in 1868-69 Louisa or Lueasy Williams and a brother Millard Williams in 1880 and Eugene Williams around 1881 or 1882. Not sure they had all the same father. They all lived in Bumcombe Co, North Carolina. If anyone has any knowledge of them would appreciate here hearing about it.

Thank you

Teri

1790-1800 in North Carolina?

What happened in North Carolina between the 1790 and 1800 Census?

My ancestor, Richard Pattishall is listed in the 1790 Census in Wake, NC, he doesn't show up in 1800, although there is a listing for an Elizabeth Patischoal - but no adult males. We know he married Elizabeth in 1790 and they had a child in 1800. Neither he nor Elizabeth are on any 1810 census records.

The next census they appear on is 1820 in Georgia, and I know they were entered in the Land Lotteries.

Could Richard have gone to Georgia before the 1800 census, and brought the rest of the family later?
