Mr Houk, I appreciate your information and responses to my posting!
My GG Grandmother Caroline Combs and her family have been quite the mystery! The story that was passed down was that she, at age 13 yrs old, came with two older brothers, Harrison and Meredith Combs, from Scheffield, England and were sold in Virgnia as indentured servants, Caroline going to North Carolina. She stayed with the man, F. Jacob Hopper (Hoppas) who purchased her until he died, bore his children and never left his service. I have never been able to prove that actually happened. Nor, can I find evidence that she had family and actually was born in North Carolina, as the census states.
My Grandfather recorded that she as born in 1842 and died in 1909. The first record that I have found that I believe is our Caroline is in the 1860 Wilkes Co, NC Census, Traphill Twp, that has a Caroline Combs and 1 month old daughter, Nancy, living with a Joseph Blevins family. Living next door is a family, William Combs with four children, two of which are boys named Harrison and Meredith. This could perhaps be her family, but I can't find any info to positively show this.
I was hoping that the information you provided would give me another clue to work from, but I haven't been able to tie it in either. But I wanted you to know that I appreciated your efforts! Thank you!
