Last month I was visiting Avery Co from St. Louis. While visiting the Avery Co Public Library at Newland, I asked one of the librarians about whether any employment records for the mines survived. She thought not, but showed me a manuscript in the verticle file on the mines. My g-g grandfather Thomas Crow moved from Carter Co,TN to Cranberry in 1885 to work at the mine. The area he was raised in Carter Co also had iron mines and Duggers.I don't know if there is a direct relationship in the development. Mr.Robert Nave.University Parkway,Johnson City,TN has published his thesis on the Carter Co iron mines. A copy is in the J.C. Library. I think the cost is about $15.
