Bertie county maps! 1863 - with names!

Classification: Census
Surnames: Outlaw
Probably everybody on this list already knows this, but anyway:

The Library of Congress has 3 detailed maps of Bertie County made in 1863. The interesting thing about them is that individual farms are labeled with the owner or tenant! I was able to find my great-great-grandfather John Alexander Outlaw on one of these maps.

If you compare with the 1860 and 1870 censuses you can probably deduce
exactly where your ancestor lived even if they do not appear on the map.

Here they are:

If you want to look at these maps you need to download the highest
resolution maps, which have the "jp2" suffix.

By the way, this page

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ncbertie/towns.htm

gives the modern-day equivalent of some of the names on the maps (e.g., Harman's Crossroads is now Aulander).
