"LAGLE" OR LAIL CEMETERY

LOCATION: South of Morganton, off River Road and three miles from Hwy. 18, take a left on Walkers Chapel Road. Go one mile and pass the church; take a left onto Scotts Mountain Road. Thereafter will be on private property. The cemetery is about one mile back into the hills. At the end of the road one must cross the creek and climb up onto a pine ridge. There are 22 graves. All are well marked at the head and at the foot with rocks. Legible carving remains on nine rocks. Two are very long graves (perhaps slaves), and two are very short. The name Lail can be made out on three graves; a date can be determined on one. That says (E Lail 17_-1857). All others have very curvy, script writing: PL, AL, SL, EL, LAIL, JL, E LAIL, PL & LAIL, BORN

This property was settled upon by the "Lagles" in the late 1700's. The cemetery was last read in 1995
