SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT ABOUT JOHANNES BAST
by Jim Watkins
Johannes Bast who settled in western North Carolina in the 1750's is the earliest proven ancestor of the white Bost families of North Carolina. He is the earliest proven ancestor of most of the Bosts in the southeastern states, in Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma and southern. Illinois.
For many years, the accepted personal information concerning Johannes Bast has been as follows:
Birthdate - some time before 1740, when son Leonhardt was bornBirthplace - unknown, possibly in the German province of Hanover.
From 1740 to about 1753 he attended Williams Township Lutheran Church in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. About 1753 he moved to North Carolina. His will was probated in Mecklenburg County on 17 January 1778 and his estate papers were also filed there. He lived in what is now Cabarrus County.
These statistics about Johannes Bast were the result of a lifetime of careful research and study of the Bost family by the late Mrs. Howard (Mary) West. By the mid-1970's, the research project she began lead grown into a massive study of the entire Johannes Bast family, involving a long list of Bost relatives and others.
In recent years, a revised version of Johannes Bast's personal data has been in circulation. According to this material, Johannes Bast was born in Kaldung, Germany on 26 February 1719/20, parents Jung and Anna Maree Bast, grandfather Nicoli Bast. This new version of Johannes Bast of North Carolina's birth and ancestry has appeared on an LDS Ancestral File pedigree chart, in the heritage book of at least one North Carolina county, on a genealogy website, in a recently published family history, and probably in other places as well.
This new version of Johannes Bast's birth and ancestry is apparently based on the assumption that the Johannes Bast listed with Jung and Anna Maree Bast in a list of arrivals at the port of Philadelphia and Johannes Bast of North Carolina are the same person. Unfortunately, this assumption is incorrect.
The list of arrivals containing the names of Johannes, Jung and Anna Maree Bast had been in print for many years, and Mrs. West was well aware of it, when she made a research trip to Pennsylvania to search the land grants, church records, state archive records, library materials and local courthouse records for Bast family data
Among other things, Mrs. West's research proved that there were at least two men named Johannes Bast who lived in colonial Pennsylvania. Her research proved that the Johannes Bast who arrived in Philadelphia with Jung and Anna Maree Bast spent the rest of his life in Pennsylvania. He settled in Maxatawny Township, Berks County. His will, dated 2 May 1783, was recorded in Berks County Will Book 3-96-47. His widow Magdalena Bast took out Letters of Administration, recorded in Book 3, page 35 of the Berks County records. She died in 1785.
No one is questioning that the Johannes Bast, son of Jung and Anna Maree, who is listed with them in the Philadelphia ship lists and in the church records of Kaldung, Germany, was a real person. The question under consideration in this essays is: Was this Johannes Bast the one who settled in North Carolina? The answer is no, for the following reasons: The Johannes Bast who is in the ship lists lived and died in Berks County, Pennsylvania, as stated above. He could not possibly be the same person as the Johannes Bast who lived in Northampton County, Pennsylvania in the 1740's and later moved in the 1750's to North Carolina.
How do we know that the Johannes Bast who lived in Northampton County and the Johannes Bast whose will and estate papers were recorded in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina were the same person? We know because the lists of baptisms of Johannes' children found in the Northampton County church records are a perfect match for the list of children contained in the Johannes Bast (John Bost) will and estate papers.
Mrs. West labored for many years on a yet to be published history and genealogy of the Johannes Bast (Bost) family. After her death, Jim Watkins and Mrs. Fred L. Sherrill, Jr. were asked to serve as coeditors to complete the work needed on the manuscript. In its present form, the Bost manuscript contains over two thousand pages of typewritten text. A copy of the manuscript has recently been placed in the hands of the Catawba County Historical Association of Newton, North Carolina. The Association is currently involved in preparing the manuscript for publication. For more information write to:

Estate settlement, 8 December 1786, Mecklenburg County NC lists wife and children. Deeded part of the 100 acres to congregation of Dutch Buffalo Meeting House in 1782 (Later Saint John's Lutheran). Lost an arm in Revolutionary War.

Wife Friesland information came from Richard Groner compilation. The two families do not fit if Mark married Bost (named in his will ) after Friesland died. More evidence is needed to get this all straight.
