This may not break down your brick walls but I have original letter written by my ancestor that mentions a John E. Brown. The name is clearly legible. I have other letters mentioning Kimbrough and Graves.

"Yanceyville, 19th September 1843
...John E. Brown keeps a boarding house. It has two School Mistresses, Dr. Comer’s daughter & Sam E. Moore daughters... "
