In 1775 the British army was occupying Boston and were confiscating all guns, powder and ammunition. They would not allow the starving civilians to leave unless they surrendered all of their arms first. The Army under Gen Washington was camped out on Winter Hill overlooking Boston and his army swelled in size with outraged Americans who came from all over to fight the British. John was living in his home of Surrey County VA at the time and was one of those Americans who had decided it was better to take up arms and help his fellow Countrymen in their fight against tyranny.
