Hello,

I'm trying to find the parents of an Alfred Smith. Born around 1818-1820. He was married in Chatham county to a Julia Lutterloh, then later to a Charlotte Catherine Lutterloh. The census' show him being in Randolph county from 1850-1880, but he disappears after that.

He listed that both his Mother and Father were from North Carolina, but that is all that I have to go on. Any help at all would be much appreciated, thank you.

I haven't posted to this board in a while until today, so not sure which link you're referring to, perhaps you saw an old message somewhere. I do post to various Boards all of the time, sometimes with various links to things, but I don't recall posting a direct link to the List of Counties for the Probate Records lately, FamilySearch has a tendency to move their files around and change links everytime they do an update, which I know they did a few days ago. That's why the link I posted earlier today was made right after I visited the site.

Deloris

I certainly have tried that link for the past 3 days and it included trying it from your link in your previous message.
Each time it comes up with a split screen and will not load.

I will try the new link you sent. I am not a novice and I use familysearch.org many times a week.

Regards, Bettye

I just posted the link an hour ago, so you couldn't have tried that one for the past 3 days.
Is your computer up to date with with all of the latest updates to your browser and software? If you can't even get to the site, that's often a case of browser problems.

Here is the link to the the entire Records Collection, try it from here:

https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/list

Scroll down to the North Carolina records, look for "North Carolina Probate Records 1735-1970", then click "Browse images" beside it, the list of Counties come up, and it does include Chatham, I use them all of the time and I see the Wills 1789-1819, Vol A, thaty you're looking for. These images are not indexed, so you'll have to browse through the pages to get to Page number you need.

Deloris

I have been looking for quite some time for information that would link Catherine Rollins (Shaddox) to the right Rollins family from Chatham County. She was born in 1823 in Chatham County and married Henry Jack Shaddox in about 1843. They moved to Georgia in about 1848 or 1849, and then on to Arkansas where they lived until their deaths. I would also like to know the maiden name of Rebecca Rollins who married Frederick, probably about 1821. I'm happy to share the information I have about these families.

I could not find any evidence that Willis had a son named John, however, his son Samuel T. Coggin had a son named John L. Coggin, born 9/27/1850, died 7/31/1922. He was married to Martha J. Glass and buried in Bethany Baptist Church cemetery in Gulf, NC. Samuel and his wife Salinda are also buried there along with several of John and Martha's children. The grave marker of Samuel lists Willis Jacob Coggin as Samual's father. I am not sure if this is the John Coggin you are searching for, but if so, I found this information at the cemeterycensus website along with pictures of the headstones mentioned with information. Please let me know if I can be of any additional help.

Hi, I have proven I'm a direct descendant of John Chavis Walden. (This part of my family history is on my grandma Walden's side of the family.) I want to know for certain what ethnic group is John Chavis Walden most likely of. I've come up with several theories. One of which was that he was Jewish, Walden or Wallen could be traced from a Jewish name in Europe. Or it he could have been of Native American descent. This is true with most of my Grandma family who is largely Cherokee.
Could this John Chavis Walden be a Cherokee?

Also, I noticed Chavis or Chavez was a Spanish name. Some say it was given to the Indians, which tribe?

A Thomas Andrews of Chatham County, who died in 1779, names a wife Susannah and 4 children in his will: John, Thomas, William, and Mary. Not sure what your dates refer to in your message. If they are birth dates, then perhaps one of the 3 males had a child named David in 1795. But I don't know for sure. If the dates are death dates, then the answer to your first question is probably NO. As to the second question on the children of David Edwards and Margaret Andrews, the children named in the message from JanLeeLam confirms my information. I don't see any of your names mentioned, plus their dates conflict with children already listed. So I'd say Marjorie and Sarah/Sally are not from this line.

Daughter Susanna married my 1st cousin James Madison Copeland in Orange.
Regarding David Edwards and Margaret Andrews:Did they have two daughters Marjorie 1815 and Sarah "Sally" 1819? Several descendants of these 2 daughters married into my family. I wonder if Marjorie and Sally were not named in David's will because they had been married for some time and had already gotten their dowry/inheritance?
I have no parents for either Margaret or David.....

Hi Janice,

Thanks so much for replying to my message. You're the first person I've met who seems to know anything about the Edwards & Andrews connection in Chatham County. How did you come by your info? Most of mine is a written version of an Edwards family history that apparently was dictated to various grandchildren and others by Rev. John Ellis Edwards in the late 1800s. Pretty much everything that was written has been verified by research of public records. What has been determined "incorrect" is surprisingly minor.

We seem to diverge in our info fairly early. My info says Susannah's maiden name was Ellis, and was the first wife of Thomas (1781-1863), not his mother. We agree that our Andrews connection would be from Thomas's mother, but we have her name as Ruth Andrews, and that seems corroborated by court records of Thomas as a child, and will records from Ruth's second marriage to a man named Mulloy. Is it possible that your Susanna (the "mother")was also named Ruth? Like I say, I'd be interested in reviewing the source(s)of your info, and providing you with mine. I have descendancy records that are verified dating from Thomas in the late 1700s. I can't say that I've connected David to our line, but perhaps he's a cousin. I know for a fact he is not a brother. Send me your email address, or get in touch with me at lbe42686@bellsouth.net. I can send you a PDF file of the family tree, starting with Thomas's mother and father. Another relative and myself have recently made contact with a descendant of one of Thomas's children by his second marriage, coincidentally named David Edwards. Perhaps your info would also be of interest to them. Maybe all together we can shed some light on some of the mystery surrounding these people. It can be pretty confusing!

Thanks, Landon

Hello, Landon! I'm a descendant of the Edwards and Andrews lines. Thomas Edwards (1781-1863) married Susanna Andrews. Her sister Margaret Andrews is my gggg grandmother. Another Andrews/Edwards marriage...Margaret Andrews, born in 1792, married David Edwards, born 1790. They raised one son and six daughters in Chatham, including Emily Edwards, (born 1819 and died 12 Jul 1854). I'd be most interested to hear whatever stories you might have on these families and I'll happily share what I know if you're interested. Many thanks, Janice

Thank you for the information on Martha Sanders, daughter of James and Mary Sanders. The 1860 Alabama census shows that the Martha Sanders who married John Buce was born about 1822. I have 2 family records showing James and Mary Sanders youngest child was Henry Ward Sanders who was born November 14, 1821. I also have information that shows James and Mary's daughter Martha was born in 1807 in Chatham Co., NC and that she married Charles Dismukes in 1827. Can you send me your sources? I am not saying that you are incorrect, just that I need sources before I make corrections.
Best regards,
Janet
