AUSTIN, WILLIAM, d. Aug. 4, 1832 at age 41 years. (there is a Masonic emblem on the tomb.
One of the largest and oldest cemetery on Portsmouth Island was washed away in the 1933 storm. In more recent years we found this marker buried in the muddy bottom of Warren Gilgo's creek. He owned and operated a schooner "Post Boy" between Portsmouth and Washington, NC. He was married and had one child. Don't know where he came from either or where his family went.
Also there was a Cornelious Austin who purchased items from the estate austin of David Wallace at Portsmouth in 1809. I suspect these Austins were from Hatteras Banks since I have records of many Hatteras people being at Portsmouth before Hatteras Inlet opened.
