Owens Family of Currituck and Tyrrell Counties, NC

This is for or anyone researching the line of John Owens who wrote his will 16 Sep 1748 in Tyrrell Co., NC or Adam Owens who was born ca. 1748 and d. 1802 in Tyrrell Co., NC. I am thrilled to be able to share this information. After 15 years of searching, I have found proof that Adam was John's son. An Orphan bond in 1764 appoints Thomas Owens his guardian and states that Adam is the son of the deceased John Owens. All of John's children were under the age of 18 when he wrote his will, so I don't know who their original guardian was, possibly John's wife Ann but most likely a male relative or friend. Anyone wanting more information can email me, I will be happy to share.

Jean

Where is the Moyock Cemetery located that has been recently transcribed online?
I have Dempsey Casey Deeds 1792-1826 that "exclude the graveyard". I have thought it to be the Casey family graveyard over the years the Caseys owned the land.
Would like to compare the Moyock Cemetery location with Casey homestead location refs. Since Dempsey Casey was a Baptist Minister until his death in 1814, I thought a Church may have been located close by or the graveyard may have held more than the family etc.
Thank you

Joseph was taken by friends and raised in N.C. and bounded out either for his passage or keep.He says in a pension applacation the ship sailed up the Roanoke River into N.C. The date 1754. Anyone with info or access to Currituck documents could you please contact me if you see his name? He married Abedience Perdue about 1774. Thanks

Since I can not find any other information about my Morrisettes in VA, I am curious as to whether anyone has run across these names in Currituck? Maybe they came to VA from NC.

Lost Colony DNA Testing

For those of you that may be interested--this came across my desk this morning.
Kay Midgett Sheppard

North Carolina Outer Banks Mystery Could be Solved by DNA Testing
The Lost Colony Center for Science and Research uses primary sources, archaeology, oral histories and satellite technology to uncover the fate of the first English settlers to North America. In 1587, a group of English colonists on Roanoke Island disappeared, leaving behind a single clue – the word "CROATAN" carved into a tree. The Croatan were a group of American Indians who lived nearby.

The Lost Colony Center for Science and Research is discovering some of the newest and most interesting findings of what happened to the Lost Colonists of 1587. The Center's researchers now believe that the English colonists merged with the Croatan Indians and were assimilated. The center is working on identifying present-day descendants. The Center also is negotiating the final stages of an agreement with the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation to be the new DNA partner. The partnership would offer free DNA testing to anyone who meets specific surname requirements.

The DNA project, the largest ever performed, is targeting people with either the colonists' or Native American surnames. According to the Center's Director Fred Willard, there are 160 names the Center is tracking, and they "are very focused on 100 of these."

To support their research, Willard and his team have found land deeds and marriage licenses that support the colonists merging with the Indians. The names recorded in these documents along with the rosters from the English voyages are the names of interest. When he tracked the names on the deeds, he found residents in present-day Chocowinity, East Lake, and Gum Neck, carried some of the same surnames.

"We are hoping to track the families as they moved," said Willard, which in turn would give information as to where the colonists dispersed. My hypothesis is the lost colonists merged with the Croatan Indians and were assimilated and over time the Croatan Indians changed to Hatteras Indians," said Willard.

Willard is hoping the DNA project will locate people with Native American ancestry, connect English families to the Lost Colonists genealogically, and track the population migration.

With the new partnership, the DNA testing would occur in three phases. The first phase, after 300 tests have been performed, will result in a preliminary study that will "match people living far away with people that never moved," said Willard.

The second phase, after 600 tests, or an estimated three years, will include people from England that have never been to North America. To perform those tests, Willard said his team may have to travel to England.

If the first two phases are successful, Willard said the Center will attempt to obtain a permit from the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) that would allow archaeologists to excavate Native American remains for DNA testing.

You can read more about this project at the Lost Colony Center for Science and Research web site at http://www.lost-colony.com.

The list of surnames currently being researched can be found here: http://www.lost-colony.com/surnames.html

Confusion with Thomas Gregory 1759-1844

I have found only an abstract of the will of Thomas Gregory.

Abstracts of Wills & Other Records, Currituck & Dare Counties, NC (1663-1850):
WB #4: Gregory, Thomas
16 May 1843
Feb 1845
Sons: Spence, Nathan H.
Daughters: Director Gallop, Sivility Parker, Fanny W. Gregory
Mentioned: Manloff R. Gregory
Grandson: Thomas G. Rodgers, s/o dau Polly Rodgers
Exr: Dau Fanny W.
Wit: James Bean, Jesse Partridge, Hodges Gallop

Can anyone verify if this was transcribed correctly?

According to the above will, Thomas Gregory had children:
1. Spence
2. Nathan H.
3. Director m. Gallop
4. Sivility m. Parker
5. Fanny W.
6. Polly m. Rodgers

However, in Thomas Gregory's RevWar pension, another daughter, Letisty Parker is mentioned. I find that Letisty Gregory, b. abt 1817 m. Samuel Parker, resided in Livingston Co., MO by 1860. Nathan, Spence and Manloff (another son?) also resided in Livingston Co., MO.

In this pension file, Betsey is named as the deceased wife of Thomas Gregory. Other notes I've seen state that Director Hall was the wife of Thomas Gregory.

Who was the wife of Thomas Gregory 1759-1844? Why was Letisty not mentioned in his will? Who was Manloff mentioned in his will? Did Fanny Gregory ever marry? What was Polly's husband's (Mr. Parker) given name?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Lynnea Dickinson
Davenport, IA

Charles, Henry, John, Phillip and Samuel Bright 1720-1820

I am wondering if anyone has a Samuel, Charles,John and Henry Bright in your ancestry? My Phillip Bright was born in 1796 in NC, not sure where or who his parents were. I believe he might of had a sister named Nancy as well and maybe a brother named Henry.

Phillip was found in Kentucky in the 1820's. Phillip married in Kentucky and bought land in 1830. Around 1833, they left for Missouri and his son John Wesley Bright left for Texas in 1879. Some of the family was found traveling back to NC to visit family in the 1800's, no mention of who or where they visited though.

While searching for Phillip's parents, I have been trying to narrow the Brights of NC in 1790-1800 down to looking at John, Henry, Nancy as possible parents as these names keep showing up for about 100 years in the family line. So there seems to be a John and Henry in 1800 living in Currituck County, but by 1820, there doesn't seem to be any Brights living in Currituck County it looks like they left for Kentucky, as there is a John and Henry there? However, I might be stretching though. Please let me know if you have seen a Phillip in your genealoigical journeys.
I am willing to do research here in New England or pay for your effort. Thank you so much! Dorothea McKenzie dreamtraveler2001@yahoo.com

Trying to find information about my Dad William George Jackson

Hello my name is Michelle Jackson and I am the daughter of the late William George Jackson who passed away when I was 3 years old in 1970. My grandparents were Ulrich Jackson and Elsie Ballance Jackson who both passed away before I was born in 1961 and 1965. I also had a Uncle Donald Jackson who passed away in the late 1980's. Uncle Don along with my great aunt Hulda always sent me such beautiful cards and letters and told me my Dad would have been proud of me when I was growing up. I always enjoyed getting a letter in the mail from them or talking on the phone. My mom Betty Jackson passed in 2001 and I do not have any family members that are still alive on her side of the family to give me any information about my dad's side of the family. I only have 3 pictures of my dad one with him and his dad Ulrich in a Military picture, one of him when he was a baby and one of him standing in front of a home in the early 60's. I know he had been married before my mom told me I had half sister named Sherry Ann Jackson from Houston Texas but I have never been able to locate her. I've seen some post from Linda Jackson Muff who I hope is my cousin I replied to the post but it looks like she hasn't left any messages in a few years so Im hoping she may check this board. I would love any information on my dad and grandparents and would love to meet any cousins if they would like to meet me. I live in Nags Head Nc and I have a great husband Eric and 3 great kids Im 40 now so I thought I better get on the ball and try to put a tree together for my kids. I was sad to notice most of my family passed in their 40's and 50's so it is hard to find much information. If anyone has any information at all I would be so grateful. Thank you Michelle Jackson Stagemeyer

I am in possession of boxes of books, pictures etc belonging to the family of a William Jackson from Currituck Co NC. These items were left in a house which my great-aunt bought and later sold. She passed away this summer and in going through her things I found these items. Being into genealogy myself I know how valuable these things can be and I hate to throw them out but will have to for lack of space. If anyone thinks this might be their Jackson family email me or reply to this post and I'll see what I can do about getting them to you.
Thanks,
Lori Willoughby

I am trying to find the will for a Joseph Dozier (possible death date is 18 Jan 1837). He was the son of Willoughby Dauge and Millicent Munden, I believe. My ultimate goal is to learn whether or not Ann Lamb Dozier (1814-1882) is his daughter by Lydia Lamb.
I am interested in locating any information on a Grandy who was born 1808 in North Carolina (probably Currituck). His full name is Cyrus Wiley Grandy (1808-1874), and he moves to Norfolk, Virginia around 1844. I have a lot of information on him and his family after moving to Norfolk, but I have nothing about his life prior to 1844. I did come across a Wyly Grandy as a head of family in the 1840 Census, but I'm uncertain of any connection. BTW I have C.W. Grandy's wife as Ann Lamb Dozier. I would appreciate any assistance either here or at rettalbot@hotmail.com. Thank you in advance.

Hello Everyone,
I have some bad news for people wanting to research Clerk of Court Records.....THERE ARE NONE !!!! I went to the Clerk's Office this week and ALL Will Books except Will Book 8, which is around the 1900's, Administrator, Executor, Guardian, Courts and Quarter Pleas, EVERYTHING!!! They have sent them to the North Carolina Archives supposedly because the books were getting in bad shape, I can tell you that they were not in BAD SHAPE, except for one, I would say they were in excellent shape!!!
I thought I would let everyone know in case you were planning a trip just to visit the Clerks Office.
I haven't been to the Register of Deeds Office yet, so cross your fingers and toes that they don't or haven't joined the Clerk of Courts band wagon.

Judy Merrell Brickhouse

Just looking for any information on either of these 2 folks. I currently own property that previously belonged to Moses Gallop. All I have been able to find are 1) a newspaper article from the 1940's regarding an arrest in VA for Moses who was arrested for the murder of Stewart De Groat. Alos, possibly a death record in 1985. The property we own is in Powells Point, adjoining land owned by other Gallops. Thank you!

I am searching for any information on my Perry family. I can only trace back to my gr-gr-grandparents: James Perry (b. c1863) m. Grace Burgess (b.c1871). On the 1900 census I have them living in Currituck - AtlanticTwp. I donnot know if I've a complete list of their children. I am descended through their son Grover Cleveland Perry. Their other children are: Sherman, Sally, Roy, James, Dencie(Prudence Hathaway), Grace, Anne(Robanna Mae), Mary, Dixie.
The name Wicker is also in the family, & the census shows them living as neighbors in 1880 & 1900.
As far as the family says, they lived in this area for a long time, supposedly came over from England & settled at Roanoke. The Perry's are also Native American.
Thanks,
Lori

I also found a listing in Pierce'S Registry for a Samuel Ferebee, rank: Ensign age: 73. The age would be about right because I also know that he had a son, Wlliam Ferebee (also listed in the Pierce) who died 09/05/1785 If anyone can validate this information, I would be grateful. I'm also looking for parentage and spouse for Samuel Ferebee.

They are my gggggrandparents. George died in 1790. Their sons Thomas and Benjamin were buried near Manteo in 1800 and 1815 along with several other family members. Since George is not buried there, maybe he was buried in his wife's family cemetery. I do not have any information on his wife, other than her first name. The names of their other children were Parthearny, Susanna, Sarah, John and Garlop(?). Any information on these family members will be appreciated.
