Steven - he did change to a civil engineer. I have confirmed that he was associated to the Carrubers Close Mission and there are a few other buildings in Edinburgh and Glasgow that have been attributed to him. They are on the Scotland architects website. John was doing missionary work in Edinburgh and moved to Birmingham about 1887-88. not quite sure on when he arrived there but do know he was in Birmingham in 1888 living with his brother George. The architects web has some of that history which I had found when I was looking up his information through records at the Quaker library, Euston Road in London.
