Surnames: Rigsbee
Hi Jim, I was born and raised in Durham County. I left there in 1974. My grandmother was a Rigsbee. Duke University was origionally built on land given or purchased from the Jesse and Mary Vickers Rigsbee. The land was in Orange County until 1881 when Durham County was formed from Wake and Orange. Jesse and Mary had a son named Atlas Monroe Rigsbee who was a prominant man in Durham. I do not know too much about the family except names, dates and so forth. As for the Rock House Station, I know exactly where it is. It is sort of a land mark when locations are given by many people. It has been all sort of things, a resturant, an ice cream shop, a service station, a bar and what else, I do not know. Atlas Monroe Rigsbee was born about 1840 and died 1903 and is buried in the Maplewood Cemetery. Sorry, I do not have any information on Matthew. There are so many Rigsbee in the area, information on James are hard to desifer. If you could tell me approximately what the birth years on your Jame and Matthew, I will see if I can find anything. I do not know anything about Rigsbee having free tuition at Duke. That is quite a large sum. I have never heard about it. My Rigsbee lines were not very well educated and steam runs out on my lines (I have several Rigsbee lines) when John Rigsbee died in 1848. By the way the Rock House is located just a hop skip and jump from Duke campus. If you are familiar with that area, the Rock House is located at the forks of Chapel Hill Blvd. and University Drive. Let me know if I can help. Sandy in NC>
