Eleanor Ruth Pittaway, 84, died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Forsyth Residential Care Facility. She formerly resided at Independence Village in Winston-Salem.
The wife of Clifford C. Pittaway Jr. (d. June 28, 1974), Eleanor was born in Archbald, Pa., on Oct. 3, 1918, to the late Joseph and Pearl Schwartztrauber.
She graduated as salutatorian from Archbald High School in 1936. Eleanor resided in Carbondale, Pa., for most of her adult life, retiring to Florida and North Carolina. While at Independence Village, Eleanor was active in the Village Voices and the "Name That Tune" singers. She was a devout member of the Lutheran Church of the Epiphany and served in ministry as a lector and as a member of the Mary-Martha Circle. Eleanor was always surrounded by her loving family.
Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Carole Mancuso and husband Frank Mancuso of Hermitage, Pa.; her son, Dr. Donald E. Pittaway and wife Carmel Pittaway of Clemmons; and two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Slade of Lebanon, Pa., and Mrs. Joann Ruddy of Coorville, N.J. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Mr. Michael Mancuso, Mrs. Lisa Wheeler, Mrs. Jennifer Baer and Mr. Donald E. Pittaway Jr.; three great-grandchildren, Alaina Myers and Katie and Hannah Wheeler; and a great-great-grandchild, Brendan Wilkenson. Second of six, Eleanor was preceded in death by three sisters, Pearl Martini of Philadelphia, Pa., Mae Parry of Carbondale, Pa., and Dorothy Bjork of Carbondale, Pa.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 2, at the Lutheran Church of the Epiphany in Winston-Salem. The service will be given by the Rev. Steven Gerhard and the Rev. Laura Wind. Interment will take place in East Dyberry Cemetery in Honesdale, Pa. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Lutheran Church of the Epiphany, 5220 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
