ELKIN - Mrs. Ruby Cockerham Byrd, 81, of Austin-Traphill Road passed away Monday, June 18, 2001, at the Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin M. Byrd.
She was the daughter of the late Rev. Carl C. Cockerham and Tessie Durham Cockerham. Ruby was born Dec. 14, 1919, graduated from Ronda High School and attended Catawba College.
She was an active member of Benham Baptist Church, teaching in Sunday school and singing in the choir until declining health restricted her. Ruby was a devoted wife and mother who cherished her family, entertaining them with wonderful meals and holidays; she loved to garden, including beds of flowers.
She is survived by three daughters and a son, Ann and (C.L) Hutchens of Lewisville, Marvorene and (Wayne) Edwards of Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, Becky and (Steve) Norman of Elkin and Richard and (Wanda) Byrd of Taylorsville; nine grandchildren, Terry, Jan and Lynda (Ann), Marlina and Byron (Marvorene), Todd and Michael (Becky) and Tracy and Ben (Richard); and five great-grandchildren, Jamie, Ryan, Chris, Justin and Cody. Ruby leaves four sisters, Grace Burcham, Virginia Luffman, Ruth Yarboro and Gerri Hume.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, June 21, at Benham Baptist Church by the Rev. Ted Combs, officiating with Pastor Jason Wiles and the Rev. Stewart Roten. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Byrd will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends and loved ones from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
