Enid Lee Draper, born Sep 19, 1893 to Cleopas and Sallie, married Billie Herman Williams, born Nov 26, 1888 to Noah Williams and Sarah Elizabeth Powell Williams. Enid Draper Williams was one of the number of Gates County residents who migrated to VA and worked in Ballard and Smith Department Store in Suffolk. She worked in ladies department for many years, coming daily from Portsmouth on the bus. Billie Williams was a barber in Portsmouth, which is where they resided in an apartment on the 2nd floor of a home, as I recall. Enid died in March 1975 and Billie Williams some time after that.
Clifton, who was born in NOV 1898, lived with Enid and Billie at one time. Enid Draper and Billie Williams had no children. They died in Portsmouth, VA.

Researching Parker/Draper family from Gates,NC. Alfred Parker married Emiline Rountree in 1860; Cleopas Draper married Sally V. Baker; Child of Alfred and Emiline was Richard H Parker; Child of Cleopas and Sally was Janette. Richard and Janette married in 1890 and their child Viola married
Fred Campbell of Mobile, Al. They had several children living in the Mobile/Foley area.

Can anyone advise the location of any of the following in Gates County:
Indiantown Road (Not Indian Neck Road)
Indian Gut (off Bennett's Creek)
Cabin Branch
Schoolhouse Branch
Flat Pond
Juniper Branch

I am trying to pinpoint the last 30 acres of land owned by the Chowanokes up to 1821, as well as some other parts of the reervation, which lasted until 1790. Any help with these old geographical references will be very helpful. I can't locate them on any map Ive seen created since WWI

I don't know if you're still doing research but I am a descendant of Asa Piland that married Christian Riddick. Thier daughter Cloi Piland married Josiah Relf(ph). This is my line of people. If you have any info I would appreciate it. I have never found anything definitive to link Asa as one of James' children but I had put it down as the most possible alternative from the Census evidence that I had collected. I would appreciate any help. If I have anything I would be more than happy to share. At this point I am one of the dispised internet genealogist due to proximity- My family eventually ended up in Texas and so until I retire I am limited on what I can get my hands on.

I have traced back to William RW Harrell who married Olive Fowler and they had a son named Ephraim Harrell who married Elinis Anna Webb. They had a daughter named Laura Harrell who married William Henry Stewart who are the parents of my great grandfather Lee Stewart. Hopefully this will help you out. In the 1850 US Census for Gates Co., NC, the family is listed as:
1. Miles Benton age 47
2. Elizabeth Benton age 45 (this is Elizabeth Baker dau. of Blake Baker 1773-1855)
3. Ceola Ann Benton age17 (should be Celia)
4. William S Benton age 15 ( transcription error, should be T for Thomas)
5. James B Benton age 12
6. Miles W Benton age 10 (W = Wright)
7. John L Benton age 8 (L = Lewis)
8. Jesse B Benton age 3
Living with them are:
1. Lousia Omfleet age 17 (transcription error,should be Umfleet)
2. William Archer Omfleet age 9 (see above note)
These may be children of Margaret Peggy Baker and Lewis Umphlet/Umphleet
Miles and Elizabeth moved about. In the 1860 census they are living in a household with John and Mary Parker and several other families still in Haslett, Gates Co., NC. In the 1870 census they have moved to Cypress Chapel, Nansemond Co., VA (post office listed as Suffolk) and are living in a household with the Bunkley family.
I do not have any info beyond that.

Alvin/Alvah Blanchard

I have looked and looked for Alvah's parents and siblings. He was born in NY?in1805, died same in 1835. Wife was Jane Eggleston, and they had children. Someone out there must have this informatrion. They are my husbands great-great -grandparents. We have information on her after his death when she and the children moved to Mi. I have looked for this family for over 50 years and would sure appreciate any help .

If anyone has access to the Gates Count cemetery books, I would appreciate knowing if there are any Manning family members listed.

My great great grandfather was Richard Haughton Manning and his wife was Lydia S. (Howett) Manning.

Richard was born in Edenton (Chowan County) but moved to Gates County after his marriage and lived in Gates County for the rest of his life.

He was born in 1818 and died in 1871.

With his 2 wives he had the following children: James, Frances, Sarah, William, RT or RJ, and Magruder or McGruder.

I don't know where any of them are buried and am hoping to find some of them in Gates County.

I’m a descendant of Elisha Riddick (unknown birth date) of Gates Co., NC. He married Margaret Eason (unknown birth date) presumably from Gates Co., as well. From their union was Sarah Elizabeth Riddick born 1858 in Gates County, NC who eventually married Joseph T. Copeland presumably from Gates Co. as well.

Any help on finding more information on this family would be greatly appreciated.

Today I was reading over the Gates County Cemetery Survey done by the WPA in 1936. I ran across the Old Draper Cemetery in Drum Hill, NC. Buried there are Cleopus Draper and Marmaduke Baker, his father-in-law.
Dates for Marmaduke are 26 Jan 1809 (census records indicate it should be 1801...could be an error on the part of the surveyor) - 2 Aug 1877.
Dates for Cleopus are 1842-1912. If Cleopus died in NC there should be a death certificate for him at Ancestry, but I did not find one. Perhaps he died in Virginia. Drum Hill is very close to the NC-VA border.

I have an Ephram Harrell b. 1820 Fla. or Ga. married to Anna Webb b1830 Ga. going to Texas via the Southern route of Florida. His parents ( I think ) are R W William Harrell b. 1780's N.C and Olive Fowler b. 1790's Miss. Her parents (pretty sure) are Jesse Webb and Mary. Do your Harrells have a strong association with the King family?

Jernigan Family of Gates

I'm trying to establish a connection with my Great-Great-Great Grandfather, William "Jimmie" Jernigan (d. 1877) of Gates County, NC to Thomas Jernegan who arrived in America in the 1600s from England.

Thomas Jernegan and his family settled in Nansemond County VA, which is just across the border from Gates where my ancestor Jimmie Jernigan lived.

It has been stated by several researchers that Thomas Jernegan is the forefather of all U.S. Jernigans, and I don't think it's any coincidence that my ancestor lived only a few miles from where Thomas first settled.

If anyone has any background information on William James Jernigan of GATES COUNTY, A.K.A. "Jimmie", I'd appreciate it.

There are three family trees on Ancestry.com that have Sandy Locke and Rebecca Cross.

YOUR tree indicates that they had twelve children between 1878 and 1902.

The closet black family which makes more sense to be the one you seek would be Hugh L White and Hattie with children Morman, Eula, Hugh Sarah, Ida and Hattie That resuded ub Belvidere, Perquimans, NC in 1930

In 1910, I find Hugh L White, age 17 living with his father Simon R White in Belvidere, Perquimans, NC

Hugh's Death Certificate gives his father as Simon White and mother as Senna Turner. Birth date of 1 Fweb 1895, death as 19 Aug 1967.
His spouse as Nellie

The 1900 census gives his father as Simon White, mother Asenaih A. and siblings, John, Luzena, Teda, George H. and Jocephas

I am assuming that this is a caucasion family. If not, there are several colored families in the area with some of the same name that could fit the bill that I can take a look at.

1829 census Joe F Copeland age 49, Martha (Mattie) age 42
Winton, Hertford, NC

Children" Hattie E. age 15, Rosa L. age 13, Minnie age 11, Julia age 8, Marvin age 6 and Nellie age 1

1910 census Joseph F Copeland age 39,
Mattie J age given as 38
Upper, Chowan, NC

Children: Joseph w age 9, Hattie age 5, Rosa L age 4 and Minnie L age 1yr3 mo

1900 census Joseph F Copeland b.Feb 1871 age 29, Mattie J b. Jan 1878 age 22 Married in 1898
Rich Square, Northampton, NC

Also on the 1900 census record I find two other Copeland families living nest door. There is a Charles Copeland age 34 with wife Sara and son Charles Jr. Charles is probably brother to Joseph.
And Eli Copeland and 63 with wife and daughter. Wife is probably not mother to Charles and Joseph due to the repoted age. But Eli is probably their father.

1880 census shows that Charles is a broher to Joseph
The Copelands are living in Upper, Chowan, NC

+Sarah Jane age 39
Children:
Julia E. age 19, Daniel L. age 17, Merian M age 16,

my lewis green with his wife had children, one is william g. green.
this information leads right into my grandfather arch northcutt green, my mother's father.
can you get back to me about the information you have.
i've seen the marriage information in 1839 so i know these two were married and that information fits.
would like to share more, but need some more info on martha pierce, background stuff.
