James Barney, bondsman for James Webb in his marriage to Sophia Bell, was a tavern owner down on the docks at Falmouth/Stroudwater, Maine. He was a colorful man and well-known in the community. It was reported that on many evenings that the tavern would become rowdy and loud requiring the authorities to come and quiet the place down. James Webb would most likely have come to the tavern looking for work as he was a ships carpenter. He probably became acquainted with Mr. Barney while looking for work on the docks, and perhaps to quinch a thirst. Now, you can see why James Webb used James Barney as a bondsman, and also named his first son after him.
