Seeking documentation for the following Payne marriages. They probably ocurred around Madison Co, NC or Greene Co, TN:
Edith (Ada) Caroline Payne to William (Bill) Walter Williams about 1898.
Lonnie Payne to Docie Bell Shelton about 1898.
Humphrey Payne to Bessie Agnes ____ about 1901
Alex Anderson Payne to Lillian Magnolia Thomas about 1905.

Fowler is listed as Bondsman.


!MILITARY: "History of the 13th Regiment TN Volunteer Cavalry USA" by Samuel W. Scott and Samuel P. Angel, gives James O. Payne of Co K, who was 26 years old at date of enlistment 23 Sep 1863.
IBID, pg 129, 'In this consolidation (abt Jan 1864) what was known as Co A of the 17th became Co K of the 13th, under Capt John G. Dervan...'
Declaration for Pension (from U.S. Archives), On 2 Dec 1910, James, age 75, declared for a civil war pension. He was a resident od Allanstand, Madison County. He was honorably discharged 5 Sep 1865 at Knoxville, TN. He was 5 ft 10 inches, fair complexion, blue eyes and light hair. He lived in Greene Co, TN since 1873 and Madison Co, NC since 1881.

!RUMOR: Carrie Johnson (born Landers) said in June 1995 that the O. in James O. Payne was short for Oscar. This is confirmed by the testimonial of David Moss who served in Co. K of the 13th TN Cav and listed Osker and Will Payne as members of his company.

Notes for Louisa FOWLER

!CENSUS: 1850 US Census, Weakly Co., TN (NW TN), 4 yr old Louisa Fowler living with parents F. & Malinda & sister Mary, age 2. Unknown if this is our Fowlers. Expected to find them in S.C., but no matches there. William L. Payne's wife was also from SC. Could Louisa and Sirenia have been from the same place in SC??
1920 US Census, Greene Co., TN, ED# 69, sht 6B, family #124, living in
the household of daughter Louisa.


!DEATH: Greene Co, TN Vital Statistics, Death, 1881-1939, at Greeneville Public Library, roll #162, cause of death acute endocorditis. Also, obituary in Greeneville Democratic Sun, 9 Jan 1929, pg 3, also at Greeneville Public Library.
Also, tombstone. Tombstone is a recent stone. It was not listed in Buford Reynolds' 'Greene Co, TN cemeteries Vol 2'. The stone must have been added since the cemetery was 'read' in 1965.


!MILITARY: General Affidavit (from US Archives) of William Dickson in the matter of Louisa Payne's application for a pension after the death of her
husband James (13 July 1915), states that Mr. Dickson knew Louisa's mother and that they moved to Greene Co from South Carolina.

Parkins [2543], died bef. 1900. He married (2) on 18 Mar 1901 in Madison, NC, Mahala Haire [2544], born abt. 1880 in TN. !MARRIAGE: Madison Co, NC Marriage Register gives a marriage between Jas R. Payne (age 38 of Greene Co, TN) and Mahala Haire (age 21 of Greene Co). Date of license and marriage is 18 Mar 1901. Not sure if this is James Randolph, but it is a good fit. John Payne (of TN), Mary Tweed and July Payne witnessed the marriage in Twp #2. Greene Co, TN, marriage book #5 (1889-1894), page 214, #1276, Randolph Payne to Mary T Parkins, 7 May 1893 !CENSUS: 1880 US Census, Greene Co, TN, #173/177, living w/ cousin William Payne, vol. 12, ED 44 1900 US Census, Greene Co, TN, ED #48, sheet 3, 18th civil dist, James is a widowed farmer living alone. He is living 2 households away from brother, John. 1910 US Census, Greene Co, TN, ED #91, sheet 8B, line 61, #121/126, Randolph is a farmer !DEATH: Letter from Sally Baughn Tweed, 25 May 1998, 'Personal knowledge of Evelyn Payne Tweed, 1990, "Uncle Randolph died at White Rock Hospital (NC) and was picked up by Uncle Dan and his boys in an old Model T pickup with a short bed. Randolph's feet stuck way out over the end of the truck bed. They covered the body with funny papers (newspaper comics), and the children got the funnies to read after the family got the body out. The coffin was home-made, and they didn't make it deep enough. When the boys asked Dan what to do, he said, "Mash it down, he won't care," and they smashed Randolph's nose with the cover." Mom (Evelyn) remembers the one anecdote about his death because she was one of the children who got to read the funny papers.' 17 Jul 1998 phone conversation between Sally Tweed Baughn and Evelyn Payne Tweed, 'Randolph died in 1931 or 1932. I believe it was 1931 because we still lived in our old house - it being before the house burned down. Letter from Sally Baughn, 17 Jul 1998, 'Randolph is buried in Paint Creek cem, beside Isaac Payne, without a stone.'
