I am searching for information on the ancestry of my great grandfather, Robert M. (McComb?) Knox, b. July 1826 NC, d. aft. 1910, prob. Tipton Co, TN. My cousin has worked on his line without further success off and on for over 20 years.
We know that Robert M., his siblings and his parents were born in NC. On the KNOX rootsweb list I saw a list of headstones in the Steele Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetary and was struck by the similarities to names in Robert M.'s family. In addition, in 1850 Robert M. (with brother? Samuel) was living in the household of his sister Jane and brother-in-law Abner Deweese, Hopewell District, Davidson College, Mecklenburg County. Other members of the household were Avery (m, 3), Robert (1), Laura (6) and Margaret (4). Robert married Martha Jane (probably in AL), and Robert Knox and his brother? William were in Barton, Franklin County, Alabama in 1860 with wives and children. Martha died and Robert M. moved to Tipton County, TN, where he remarried in 1868, and remained until at least 1910. Robert and Martha's children were Mary (Molly), James H., Nora (Nancy), Robert A. and Sarah (Sally) E.[my grandmother].
On the hypothesis that Robert's father may have been Robert or Samuel and lived in Mecklenburg County, a volunteer has found in a book by Herman W. Ferguson that there is record of a will for a R.M. KNOS who died in about 1857 in Mecklenburg County. I am anxious to get a copy and see if I can establish any connection to my Robert M. KNOX.
If you see any connections, please let me know. Linda Clements,
