Classification: Query
Surnames: CRUMPLER, HAWKS
As I said in my previous post Mary (Polly)Hawks, Rhoda's Hawks' sister, is my second great grandmother. My sister and I have searched many years and not found out much about the Hawks line. John Hawks was born about 1750 in Virginia. He died in Nash Co. in Apr 1850 and is listed in the 1850 Census mortality schedules. He is NOT the famous John Hawks associated with Tryon Palace. Guy Baker has done some good research which can be found on his pages "Haight, Horton, Hicks." John Hawks' wife was Tempie, maiden name unknown. I at one time thought she was a Ricks, but no longer believe so. Ruth McNinch suggests she might have been Temperance Whitfield. Guy Baker suggests she might have been Temperance Braswell Hunt.

Tempy and Rhoda Hawks are in Nash Co. in the 1850 Census. Tempy Hawks appears in other families in the 1860 Census with the William J. B. Harper family and in the 1870 Census with the Folansbees, both in Nash Co. She is always listed as born in NC and usually as unable to read or write. Helen Sharpe has some information on Rhoda posted on her tree on rootsweb. Guy Baker has Bennett Crumpler's Civil War service record on his web site. I had looked again yesterday and cannot connect Bennett with any other Crumplers. He is about the same age as Benajah Crumpler, but they appear to be two different individuals, since both have military service records.

I'm sorry not to be of more help to you. I would love to hear if you discover anymore about these people as I too am searching for them.
